    I don't feel like reading through 2 pages of posts....plus i am at work and my internet is being monitored. But anyway, on to my point. I was running into problems where it was locking up too. I upgraded to 2.0. I did one simple thing that fixed it-having kept the orinal file Ns20.exe(or whatever it is called) I copied my config.cfg to my desktop(as to not lose my settings) and i just deleted my entire NS folder. After deleting, I restarted my computer. After rebooting I ran the NS2.0.exe to install NS 2.0. After that I copied my config.cfg to restore my settings. Rebooted one more time for good measure and enjoyed playing again. Problem solved. IT may or may not fix your problems. But my problems were only with NS and this has worked so far with 2.0 for the last 3 weeks now. No lockups since...

    just for comparison.. I have...
    2.0ghz amd
    756mb 256ddr ram
    Aopen Kv7333 mobo
    on Dsl with 10/100 nic
    30gig main drive
    120gig spare drive
    56x cd rom.
    WinXp pro-with only a few updates on it

    My lockups also started getting more frequent until i finally took action. Like I said I have no problems now.

    After re-reading some of the posts it reminded me how my system usually locked up when between a games in the RR and people were talking using in game Voice. They would start locking and on one of the words they were speaking my speakers repeated until XP closed it down.

    This is somewhat related;

    The files with funny names you were finding in the root directory of you hard-drive, yes, they are created by Cheating Death, and yes, they are temp files that are deleted when you quit, hence they build up after a few crashes.

    I also experience crashes with NS, but not as regularly as you poor people have been getting (on average about twice a week). When mine crashes I get the looping sound and a lockup, never a black screen.

    I would like to think that this is just my computer crashing as computers do, and not a real problem, this is probably the case, since this HAS happened when I wasn't playing half-life before.

    I had an SB audigy-OEM, but since they never made sound driver updates for the OEM card, i got rid of it and used my onboard soundcard-which is an ACAudio97 or something like that.

    I never did the full SP Update because it caused my whole system to lock up at intervals. I just only manually downloaded pretty much just the security fixes. But those lock up problems from the Windows update was before NS ever reached 1.0.

    I know i'm not really a tech-support person, but I feel for you, all of you (I had a similar probem which turned out to be a corrupted version of Cheating-Death).

    Can I just ask if you are all running Windows XP?

    It sounds like the new sounds added for 2.0 (i.e, the sound of the LMG/HMG clip hitting the floor) are the culprits. Is there any way in which these sounds are different from the other sounds?

    yep Windows XP here with the SP1 and most of the updates
    it never happened before ns 2.0 i believe and it is a sound problem..if u look through some of the pages from this post, u will see most people had soundblasters and had the SP1 update

    They can't just stop everything to just fix a problem that only affects 100 people,1000 people out of how many people have it now? several million??? Besides if they figure it out what is actually causing the problem, which will take time to research it and get an offical word on what the cause is(by contacting microsoft directly if need be) then they have to have time to fix it. Which will take longer. Then they will need to decide how to implement the fix, which won't take as long as the other steps, but then they have to release it. Which release will probably come in the next client side patch-if it is a client side problem, which the next client side patch is not out yet.

    SP1 is simply a collection of the updates on WinUpdate gathered together. Although it has a few extra things too, downloading the updates separately should not really accomplish much.

    My system freezes occasionally (once every two months?) when I fiddle with DLLs and AdminMod. XP is not really a gaming system, but I still think the crashes are caused by NS or the HL engine.

    Re-install generally does work fine, but it means you loose any mods/advanced setups you may have.

    I also think that saying several-million people have ns is a bit mutch. I never see more than 20,000 ppl playing at anyone time, so taking account for time zones only about 100,000 ppl play per day. If the average player plays once a week (pitifully low I know,) then that makes 700,000.
    Still, as the pop' of UK is about 60Million, and the US is several times that, then there's a lot of ppl who could be playing.
    (But some are inprisioned, some are too old, some too young, some hooked on CS...)

    yep i understand that, plus they are probably trying to fix any Steam problems at the moment. I just hope that they find a fix for this in the future

    <bump>

    I have this identical problem... have tried many solutions. I have very similar specs: SP1+sound blaster card, in my case, i have the sound blaster LIVE!
    no drivers seem to fix the prob either. (and turning off my sound card fixes it, but no sound sucks)

    need more suggestions.

    I have this problem. It is SOOOOOOO frustrating.

    I have found one quck fix which extends the play between lockups. (I can usually play for several hours now between looping sound / hard crash.)

    I have a Sound Blaster Live and I turn hardware acceleration to OFF.

    It makes the ingame sounds scratchy sounding at times. :-/

    Specs:
    XP Pro SP1
    AMD Athlon 1800+
    Sound Blaster Live
    Geforce 5600 FX

    <bump>

    well i have a 1.5ghz p4
    512 ddr memory
    xp sp1

    i just reinstalled xp and before i reinstalled NS was fine... (note i had no sp1 at the time)
    then i got a mic after reinstalling with sp1...

    i now have the problem where it will crash and do the sound loop thing or it will kick me to the console and then do the sound loop. the hl.exe error box comes up and i click ok and NS dies... then my gamma on my desktop is SUPER HIGH... anyways i noticed that it usualy happens (90% or more of the time) when i am talking on mic or right when i hit the mic button...

    could that have anything to do with it... maybe if i dont use the mic (and i dont hit the button because of being usta it...) it wont crash...

    if anyone could check when it crashes for you if you are using the mic or somone else is.... o well, just a thought =\

    every time I would start NS, it would seem that NS would randomly choose 1 or more sounds (any type) and say that it would crash when those sounds were played.

    this ranged from reloading, shooting, biting, splating, clicking, etc... even the microphone, mine and other's.
    I just play NS on a different computer.
    ps: turning off sound exelleration did nothing for me.

    <bump... again...>

    well, its only when i use voice chat now... i can play for hours if i just dont use the mic... but the mic is a very important thing when you need to give quick instructions to a few different people... ah well..

    if this is the reason if happens with other people here, please reply...

    I managed to solve my Half-Life lockup issue. Let me precede my solution by saying that I had this issue in many games, but OpenGL games such as half-life were the worst. (Actually HL was worse than my other OpenGL games, most likely do to extensive use of voice communication.)

    Symptoms: Half-Life would lock-up, usually to a black screen with looping sound. The only way to restore the system was to restart.

    Solution: My Video card and sound card were sharing the same IRQ. (This is a big no-no, but somehow I never checked it when I setup my system.)

    Many things can cause this sort of lockup, but it is worth checking this out.

    Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information -> Hardware Resources -> IRQ’s. If your video card shares an IRQ with any other device, try removing that card from your system and placing it in another slot.

    This is not the fix. Here is the problem and nothing else needs to be in this topic:

    1. XP SP1
    2. SB audio
    3. Freezes on a sound

    I have all 3 of these just like many people do. It seems to happen mostly when I am in the Ready Room. It might be something in Voice comm or it might be a sound that is made when a game ends and everyone gets back to the RR. This is an annoying problem, esically since my Gamma ingame stays on my desktop after a crash, which makes it really bright. <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I totally agree. No fixes stated in these forums or otherwise have worked for me and I share these same symptoms and same specs. The only solution is to wait for 2.1. The only thing I can think of to help a little is to create a shortcut to resetgamma.exe on my desktop.
