<div class="IPBDescription">time to sort this out</div> Now I thought this only happened in cs but it's started to weave its way into NS it seems.
Atm I'm getting a lot of cries like "gg torment 3mb cfg" which is quite annoying because it seems to catch on with others who'll use it a reason for my clan players being good.
I've also noticed other decent players getting the same, what about you guys in the U.S do you have any of this?
It's got to the point where I've uploaded my config.cfg with explanations of everything in there so people realise there is no truth in 'configging'
Take a look at it <a href='http://www.gnorwood.fsnet.co.uk/config.cfg' target='_blank'>here</a>
Give it a read you might find it informative or beneficial.
Any feedback/stories most welcome

I just checked my settings, and found
gamma 2.500000
brightness 0.800000
Question: do you have a <b>really</b> lousy monitor, or do you like NS to be played in a painfully bright, washed-out setting where you can see everything - even in the darkest of corners?
It works fine with my card, where as eax causes everything to echo.

A3D uses about 5x as many CPU cycles as EAX. This really isn't much of an issue though, unless you have an old computer.
Just use whatever sounds best to you.
you don't HAVE anytihng in your config
everysingle one of those is simply default things with possibly diff values
you have like 2 scripts (team says for ammo/med)
MY CONFIG is bigger then that (well by like 4 lines <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> and those are all global says to teach ppl how to do stuff like toggleeditps)
the entire thing comes down to lame idiots who think that any pme who is better then them must obviously be abusing something b/c as we all know they are the BEST player of xxxx game there is.
People are stupid, get over it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
lol, people are really stupid <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Its not even like you have scripts of ANY sort (no commander script, no evlolve scripts etc etc)
/me decides that every one should learn just what is possible and what isn't (my fav is still people cliaming I hae an aimbot for a mod that uses only nonhitscan weps <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
Find yourself another server to play on. Anyone who blames your config for their loss is an idiot, regardless of what your config is. End of story.
Are you saying that there are no aimbot programs for NS because it uses non-hitscan weapons?
people can strip out all the dodgy stuff

i hate ppl that say scripting is wrong / abuse / cheat!
imho scripting is a part of the game and if its "cheating/abusing" then mod creators would have found a way to block it.
look at this <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

but yas, nmormal scripting = ok
abusing exploits = bad
where to draw the lines is sometimes hard
leap exploit, draviewmodels, FLightbug(well I have seen so many admins ussing this.. grr), hight erors alowing ghots building, etc etc etc are obviously exploits
say bind, comm/gorge binds, evlovle binds, etc are obviously not exploits
now come the grey areas, things like quickswitch scriots, blink scripts (wich are honestly ussles imho), and again the list goes on
so yah, it is a shadey subject
and I am on the side of the scripters (generally) b/c I am one my self <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

wow that proves how bad ns's graphics really are, I knew they covered a lot up with dark areas and particle/lighting effects.
There again I guess making things dark and all those nice effects are part of the graphics, so really what im saying is the maps are low poly
im tired.
the game is, and will always be, how it was BEFORE you start editing text files.
its like killing when youv got a parasite, parasites are part of the game, and if your oponent was skilled enough to hit you, you should take it and allow his team the benefits. its just not equal to play against people who respect the original settings.
to sum up, any help you gain from editing setting which are not found in the game options menu, is help that wasnt intended for you.
I don't see editing a config as wrong, the settings are there to be used to get the most out of the game and help stop the frustrating "I BIT HIM 65874 TIMES WTH"
Prime example of something not in the game menu but should definately be accessible: fps_max - If my machine can run ns@100fps I'd sure want it to, rather than the default 72
YoungTrotsky
cl_cmdrate = you need to find out your average fps and set it to that or a divisor of it, e.g if its 60 then use 60 or 30 [make sure you fps_max is 1 above this, e.g. if you can get 60fps constant set cl_cmdrate to 60 but fps_max to 61]
cl_updaterate = this is where you use net_graph 3 to help u find the best setting. Since I know you're on 512k adsl I suggest trying 80 at first.
<span style='color:green'>green lines</span> on netgraph are good, they mean you're receving packets fine
<span style='color:yellow'>yellow lines</span> mean rate capping is stopping you from receving packets
<span style='color:red'>red line</span> are the bad ones, packet loss
So what to do?
If you have a steady flat <span style='color:green'>green line</span> everything is perfect, feel free to try upping it until you see a change
If you have rising/falling <span style='color:green'>green lines</span> then you need to lower your rate or cl_updaterate, experiment!
<span style='color:yellow'>Yellow lines</span> = increase your rate
<span style='color:red'>Red lines</span> = try a different server, if problems persists theres nothing you can do but moan to your isp
Remember network settings wont be instantaneous, give a new setting you try a few minutes to kick in.
edit1: forgot to say to the person who said just move server, well why not try and teach people rather than to let confusion continue
edit2: the reason a3d shouldnt be used is because it can be configged so you can hear anything on the whole map, which I'm sure you can understand isn't very fair, I will not show anyone how to do this btw, regardless of reason.

config files exist because they are MEANT to be edited.
scripting IS part of the game, do you think aliases and binds were somehow accidentally coded into halflife. All of the console commands were put there for 1 reason and 1 reason only: For players to USE them.
When you suicide to get rid of parasite you ARE allowing aliens to get the benefits. Marines killing themselves as a result of an alien attack... that sounds just fine to me.

I'm guessing that isn't net_graph 3 seeing as you only get lines with net_graph set to 1 or 2 <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
as for scripting,
sigh
If every rine killed himself b/c I sited him I would be one happy skulk (look, I just instagibed a rine with 'site SWEET!)
knowing WHERE a rine is is always a good thing, in this case I know he is in the spawn Q <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Now, I fail to see how having a script that alows me to use the key pad instead of the mouse to drop buildings is unfair
or having a key bound to informing my mates that there are aliens incoming at xxx point
or being able to drop an OC with 1 button press (btw does any one know what the imp is for rez towers? I want it to try and build on impossible nodes)
again there ARE exploitive scripts (lead, fashlight build, etc) again, those are exploits (the same as stopcommandermode and others)
what about a buy script for CS? 1 button buys all my toys? It really dosn't take 'skill' to be able to be able to buy weapons, I am jsut lasy <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
or possibly a script that removes all of my hud and then takes a scrn shot, is that exploiting/cheating?
I honestly fail to see how any of this gives me an unfair advantage.
If Mod makers wanted scripting done away with it COULD be done (it would be a **** to do and would probably drive away alot of the comunity, but it could be doen).
so meh
Ofcourse you have to a draw a line with what you edit within configs, for example gl_monolights, that totally ruins ns
Which is why some form of config limiting is good in my view, such as wwcl which is widely used for cs.
