Read and let this be a lesson 2 us all
Well my sister came over to see me. She wanted to get into some PC gaming. surpirse! But with her older PC 13 gigs HD(IBM Aptiva 450 with Voodoo3 GFX card) I didint have much that would run all that well on it. So how perfect. HL runs fine on it and HL is a great game too.

So I go over to her PC. (btw its a dual boot so it runs win 98 and 2000).
She doesnt know all that much about PCs and was wondering why she coudlnt play some of the newer games on it. Later she was telling me that it has been running a bit slow lately. I asked her when was the last time she did a defrag and other system maint.

She said whats that?

I was like oooh boy... How old is this PC?

its from 1998. And she has never ever done a defrag.

I booted in under win 2000 and went to do a defrag analyser thingy and this is what I saw...

Nope just a straight print screen save and then saved into paint real quick.

    Amazing huh. lol

Hasnt been defraged since like 1998,

It took pretty much the whole afternoon to defrag.

You wouldn't even need Photoshop to make that.

How long did it take when you finished defragmenting it?

    HAVE you finished defragmenting it???

I like how theres supposed to be 57% free space, but since its so fragmented, it looks more like 10% or less. Don't let old man Monse see that, he'll choke on his dentures.

and even the pagefile is fragmented! ouch!

whenever you reformat, do this to gain a little bit of performace, as soon as windows is on and running, turn off the pagefile (since it cant be moved via defrag) reboot, defrag twice and turn it back on, youll notice the pagefile is all in a single chunk, right near the core of the drive, only on top of windows. THEN install stuff. putting the pagefile near the faster core of a drive, along with packing all of windows there too makes the system about 5% faster forever.

Gah, just buy a new computer. Tie that one to a tree, load a shotgun, and put it out of its misery. Please.

rofl I have my defrag programmed at 8pm during my diner and my AV updated programmed at 1:30 for my lunch.

Using Diskeeper, it always says "Congrats your drive is as defraged as it can be"

btw, it isn't necessary to defrag every day but if you don't use the PC at a time, you might just as well schedule it.

My laptop is much worse. No defrag, 4 years, small HD. Believe me(I checked) that whole damn bar is either red or white.
