It's a worthless script.... why don't you just hit 3, click fire, hit 1, click fire some more. Thats REALLY tough....

its a bind that means you hit a button and you leap, instead of selecting then using

i would appreciate people posting on the topic on there webbie

Depends if you are talking about the leap exploit where you can leap for no energy, which I consider it cheating. But a normal leaping script isn't cheating imo, because you have alot more controll when you don't use a script.

If the league/ladder says no scripts, it's a cheat. If they don't , it's not.

ok, again, if it is against the rules to script, don't do it (duh!)

now then as was explained, many people hear 'leap script' and don't know wth they are talking about.

The known EXPLOIT, has to do with making a script that will let you leap for 0 nrg (bhopping? lol they look like turtels compared to some one doing leap script b/c you NEVER LAND)

now, writting a script that will alow you to quick switch and use leap, not really cheating (personaly I just use lastinv)

however, I believe that scripts like that were originaly AGIANST Flays wishes (though he might have changed his mind). When the mod was first released it had some code that killed you if you changed weps to fast (to disalow scripts like that). However it ran into the problem that some of us were to fast <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> and could simulate the conditions of a script jsut with normal binds <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    so, to ans your Q.

Leap script = bad, b/c it is an exploit

quick switch, sure what ever I can do it faster with out a script <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Thats really lame that someone would say that cause I just bind q to lastinv... I dont consider it a cheat...
I use lastinv as marine to... Bound c to slot 3 originally for marine but use it when I can remember for aliens...

more just pathetic than cheating... but in every organized league for just about any game scripting is considered illegal so you shouldn't use them. And Flayra DID put stuff in the game to slow down weapon switching, fyi.

i dont use one that saves energy

the script i use selects the jump attack and uses +attack

the league has not even started either so there are no rules as yet.

Bit lame tbh cookie being banned that is it's not like you were caught using the real leap exploit that I could understand you being banned for but being banned for something that's no different to lastinv is stupid sounds like admins on a power trip to me.

most scripts might give you an advantage in speed, but sacrificing the whole rest. For example, a fade pops around the corner and you unload 10 bullets in him at lightning speed. That's great. But what if it's just a scout that parasites you and by reflex unload 10 bullets in the void? Sure, scripts give you an advantage in say, a pub, where a death won't matter, but you wouldn't risk it in serious play.

What you would rather do is just do the whole thing yourself and manually unloading your pistol in 1.3 seconds instead of 1 second.
As for the leap bite, you have plenty of time during a leap to press the slot1 or lastinv key. If you don't, chances are you didn't need to leap. Put fastswitch on if you need to +attack to change weapon.

exploit is definately bannable but that isn't what we are talking about..

scripts... hmmm... grey area but I always use the 1 action rule.

If your button changes to another weapon then thats ok, if the button also then re binds itself then that's ok. If it changes to a weapon attacks and changes back thats getting pretty grey and I would disaprove on the basis that every other muppet has to do it properly. Very hard for the admin to spot though.

A script that does changeweapon>leap>changeweapon>bite is a definate NO. As is the jump>duck>blink>slash script. Such scripting would deserve a warn;kick;ban script from the admin. I might go as far as to include the 8 round lmg burst script except that it does more to hinder the user than the target <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Im in the midst of rebindng most of my controls, I have a nice 5 button mouse, which makes for some very useful configs.

I also have a "config changer" key that allows multiple things to be bound to the same key- one key toggles the different layouts, comm gorge, aliens, marine.
Seeing as aliens don't need to reload weapons, I'm going to have the alien script bind it to something like weaponslot 3 or something, along with mouseup and down.

My mouse5 button (far right of the mouse) has a habit of being accidentally pressed, therefore I need to work out what passive function to give it, any ideas?

In short - better keybindings > scripts.
I'll be working on a final version perhaps for my "config changer" script thing later. - NB this is a completely passive script that simply rebinds a few commonly used keys - no other scripts beyond that are used.

    oh man... i hope you wont consider strafe a cheat too <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

come on... now, exploiting no energy bug is cheating. But configuring your binds and aliases so that they are most effective is no different from binding comfortably keys instead of ugly ones... is that so lame that if i press CTRL i switch to leap, and if i press that again i switch to bite?
please get real... if we really wanna be correct let's use the keybindings valve made up for us...
if we really want to prevent scripting we should just remove ALIAS command from console... and i think it's not impossibile...

I've got no problem with a script that lets you leap then switch automatically to bite in midair. I DO have a problem with that leap exploit which lets you leap silently and without using energy.
  • ZelZel Join Date: 2003-01-27 Member: 12861Members
not a cheat. if you cant hit 3, click, then 1 then youre probly handicapped and deserve to have a script.
  • JummehJummeh Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15276Members
I dont get it, why does that simple manuver need a script.

Is hudfastswitch frowned on in NS? Or lastinv.

Because imo the leap then bite is a very easy thing to do. Is that an exploit in any way?

I've simply bound lastinv to mouse2, very handy!
  • Racer1Racer1 Join Date: 2002-11-22 Member: 9615Members
If it allows you to do something thats not humanly possible (like click the mouse 10 times in .01 seconds like a pistol script), then it shouldn't be used. But a script used for convenience just because you get tired of doing something 100 times (like something that lets you leap then byte) should be completely acceptable and is not a cheat.

Sure servers have a right to kick/ban based on whatever rules they want...and I have the right to go to a different server whenever I want. Whats the problem?

I also like to be able to play cs/ns/whatever purely by mouse alone, so I can do stuff like eat and stuff. I once managed to get a fully working stafe/aim/movement system working on a mouse alone. I got confused though, so I went back to my standard config.

    Original post:

Yes, it is a cheat. Game skill should not be replaced by programming skill (no matter how much I would like that <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> )

    Edit:

Sorry, I didn't read your followup. I don't see how simply binding an attack to a button is *much* of a cheat (i once tried an alias that made it easier to blink, but I felt dirty and always forgot I had it anyway, so I stopped using it after like 1 game). But I definately consider making an alias that leaps and then switches to chomp and chomps while leaping a cheat.

The fact is, if you aren't able to move your finger half an inch to press the Q key or the 1 key (or whatever you have them bound to if you're using arrows) during the timespan of a leap, then I don't know how you are able to play NS. If you absolutely need a script to achieve the above, then it won't matter because your slow fingers won't be saved by the press of one button.

If a leap script is a cheat than so is every other binding configuration other than the default one.

I mean, would you consider a script that says "I am parasited dont stand near me" and binds it to a single key a cheat because it reduces the amount of time you spend typing? not likely. In fact a parasited script reduces keystrokes much more than a leap script.

Tbh, i don't have a problem with scripts at all. Leap/bite is fine by me, it's just a bit puzzling really since it's not at all difficult to do anyway.

But there is one exception. I hate pistol scripts. But worse than that, i hate people that bind +attack to the mousewheel. It's not a script, so a lot of servers won't kick/ban because of it. But it's a pet hate of mine. It +is+ an exploit, no matter how you look at it. And i hope anyone that does that burns in a firey... burny... er... immolation-y type combustable way.

Personally I don't think leap scripts should be allowed because it is an advantage over doing it manually, the problem is it's a hard rule to enforce without flayra stepping in and blocking up the scripting system. As for mousewheel binds - we all have a mouse wheel, so we all have the same advantage - therefore no exploit <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
  • AmelekAmelek Join Date: 2003-05-13 Member: 16265Members
I don't think its having the mousewheel bound to +attack that is an exploit ... its just using this with a pistol that causes problems. What is really the exploit is abusing the pistol's ROF. For the record, I set mouse2 to lastinv and then I use my mousewheel to switch weapons ... using fastswitch of course
