A brief reminder that the Rules you all agreed to state that there will be no discussion of illegal activity, e.g. warez.

    G-Max is a free alternative to 3dsmax.

You don't need Gmax if you have 3dsmax.

gmax 1.2 now includes support for plasma, Discreet's 3D web design application. Step up to plasma and render all the cool content you created with gmax.

Again, a brief reminder that WAREZ ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THESE FORUMS!!!!!

If someone asks how to obtain a copy of a not-for-free program (e.g. 3dsmax), and you suggest KaZaA, THAT COUNTS. So don't. Failure to obey forum rules will result in locked topics; persistance will result in a suspension or outright banning from the forums.

On the bottom right of the whole 3ds max window, there's a group of buttons. Look for the button marked with a circle. It should be at the bottom row of the group of buttons. Click it and a big circle will appear in the viewport. You can use it to change the view.

Hitting your V key in Gmax also works (anyone have any idea how to bind the view changer ot v in 3ds max?)

Not sure if it'll work the same way in gmax, but try holding mouse3 and dragging to move around, and holding alt while you do that to rotate.

edit: Though looking at zerobyte's post we may be talking about completely different things.

can u also tell me how to make the model into a .mdl model.

That bit's considerably more complicated. There might be half-life. smd importers for qmax, and if so then great. However if there isn't, you'd have to save it as a file milkshape can read (q3 .md3 for example) and finish the job with MS3D.

That might sound silly, but it means that you get to use gmax's more powerful modelling tool, at least.

Hmm I knew about mouse 3 to move around... didn't know about holding alt down though. Thanks

(in Gmax, pressing v rotates the view)
