<div class="IPBDescription">Wow</div> Hey guys,

After hearing so much complaining about all the things that people hate about NS, my friend <a href='mailto:greg@stainlesssteelstudios.com'>Greg</a> sent me these screenshots. These are the oldest known screenshots for NS, and when I say NS I really mean..."NS". They are laughable really, and it's hard to tell it's the same game.

My point for posting these is to put things into perspective. Think about how much NS has grown from these shots, then realize that NS can move that much farther from where it is today. Everyone just relax, have fun with the game, and enjoy the ride. Who knows how deep the rabbit hole goes?

Enjoy (and try not to laugh). I can't believe I'm posting these.

    Notes:

    - The bots are so stupid they only know how to do one thing: move towards the first player they see. That's why the bots in the first pic are all huddled. The bot in this next pic is trying to move towards me, the Commander.

    - That's Gina from Half-life, and yep, that's a poorly-lit version of Black Mesa. At this stage, there was no artwork in NS.

    - The green circles represent the current selection and waypoints. The lines are just drawn for no good reason apparently.

    - I think the date on these was about May of 2001.

    hehe, and be sure to read the original concepts of ns on flay's site, they are pretty funny compared to what it is now.

    btw, there is a ns map thats the black mesa base

    Nice flayra, can we have some more?

    I always LOVED seeing all the screenshots of alpha and beta versions of a game and watching how it progressed... I'd LOVE a site with a time-line of screenshots!!!
  • clamatiusclamatius Join Date: 2003-03-27 Member: 14948Members, Constellation
    If I was going to guess, I'd say that the reason these were the screenshots you had was that the first thing you were trying to do was to see if the overhead view would even work. No?

    I shudder to think at how much hackery you must have had to pull off to get the commander view into the HL engine - it's a true marvel that you accomplished it.

    OK, one more, I can't resist. This was the first game of NS ever played. Dated April 30, 2001.

    We <3 NS. What are you talking about Flay ? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    As I'm sure you know, I'm the last person to doubt NS' opportunity.

    At least you were winning. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    One little game I made, my brother's comment was "Good game. Next time, make one you can beat me at."

    I see resources made it into the first game played...

    Yep. That will give you an idea how strongly I feel about having a resource model in NS, and how likely I am to listen to suggestions to remove them...

    Ah HA! Your caught. Digging through old screenshots instead of working on 1.1. Tsk tsk tsk <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Is that a para?
    I'm surprised that Natural Selection has changed from <i>that</i> to what it is today... wow, good work, Flayra!

    so these were about ns -.5? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I love it when you look back over your work, especially when mapping, It always looks so horrible until you've remade it 10 times <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->. Heeheheh, great stuff, any old school models to see? - Tink

    P.S given you had bots in it, were you planning on having npc components? Ala workers? Crazyness.

    From the summary on the homepage that I know you spent ages whittling down to the core concept:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->"First-person strategy" with a real resource model and consequences for actions.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Yep, resources are in there. Maybe you should number the points so it's more like a NS Constitution. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Flay, that is so weird. I was driving into work today thinking about the original Overmind.org forums. I still have all the data from them and was planning on posting a thread of some of the oldest suggestions in NS, just to give people an idea of how manyh times we've heard the same thing. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Now I *definitely* need to do this. I'll try to get to it on my day off, friday, folks...

    My oldest NS ingame pics are from December 2001. I am so new-school compared to Squeal <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    I don't think you have to worry.

    The fact that people are so vocal really shows the love they have for NS. Otherwise you would have seen them packing there bags and leaving a long time ago resulting in an empty forum. Its an issue of 1.1 being on the tip of our tongues for so long. Not that we don't understand the reasons behind it and most of us are willing to wait, but patience can lead to itchy nerves and short fuses! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The potential for this game is nearly immeasurable when you consider where it's come from and the future plans on the Half Life engine alone. Then if you counter in what will happen with Natural Selection 2 on the source engine a few years down the track....

    How great does that feel! The privilege of seeing early developmental shots of the game in its infancy! Fantastic! Someone mentioned Flayra's site - where do I go to get there? (*Fervently hopes no-one points out this forum*)

    I remember that game. It was absurdly fun, for some reason. Basically no strategy, depth, or redeeming gameplay value, just a down and dirty frag fest with obscenely overpowered weapons. But it was still a beautiful and historic moment. *sniff*

    omg, ns_blackmesa would win so much.

    and what's that map in the para shot?!

    BTW, maybe offering showing lines to waypoints (a la those early shots) as an option would be good. sometimes its hard to tell if you gave someone a waypoint or not... o well.

    As shown in Flays "para" pic, it doesn't even LOOK like ns without comm view. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    "Defense laser - Upgrade that gives armor automatically firing lasers that shoot anything in short-range"

    now that electric shock is in for turret facts and resource collectors, might it be a nifty upgrade for HA in 1.1 as well?

    i think it would be really great to see a lightning ball of welding HA mowing through a hive room, if only for the laugh.
