really? I have a friend who got to listen to one of the demo things a while back (the ones they give to music review places and what not) and he said it sounded surprisingly good. oh well
note I havn't heard anything new as of late (radio? new music? what is this you speak of?)
yeah, im a fan, and unfortunately I was somewhat dissapointed. Of course, the black album was the best. Load and reload IMO weren't that bad. My favorite song is of course One...
I will always be a fan, but im still dissapointed.
Ehh, Master of Puppets was their last good album (and one of the greatest ever). Everything after that has been utterly asstastic. I'd feel bad if Lars Ulrich wasn't such a freaking **** **** PIECE OF MONEY GRUBBING **** !!!!!!!
MonsE said it right - give me tendonitis-baiting stuff like Disposable Heroes over the pathetic 90s (and beyond, unhappily) dirge-Metallica. I think the Marianne Faithfull one was the absolute limit I could stretch my fandom to - "Hi, we don't put any effort in anymore" they said.
It's funny how they try to reclaim the MP3 crowd with this album. According to their press release, they sued Napster in 2000 because "the technology hadn't reached the quality our fans expected", which it now apparently has, because they offer special tracks on their homepage. Now, I may be wrong here, but aren't we still using exactely the same technology that was so intolerably sub-par three years ago?
I'm a diehard metallica fan and I heard couple of their songs on mtv(metallica weekened or so) and I must admit, it didn't please my ears. Luckily they made lots of albums before going bad so we can still listen to Master of Puppets and Load and imagine they are still doing good music

So now they're giving away music so people will remember them after they were famous?
Do yourselves a favor and buy the new 'colored' album, the grey album (Staind - 14 Shades of Grey).... not as good as Break the Cycle but its decent stuff.
*Edit*
On topic: Find the King Nothing remix done by KMFDM, its good.

Yea, St. Anger is a letdown. The drums in it especially, its just trying too hard to be raw sounding.... *Sighs*

Oh FFS... such n3w sk00l punks we have here... Any song they recorded after about 1988 == crapoliscious. Yes, especially King Nothing and Unforgiven. Wankery over-produced slow-speed pop-metal crap. If the Metallica that made 'Kill 'em All' rode a time machine to 2003 and listened to their last 15 years of albums, they'd kick their own arses.
Master of Puppets or Disposable Heroes are the greatest songs. Orion is right up there also. Or maybe Leper Messiah? Didn't I mention that MoP was their greatest album? It has no bad songs.
Nothing wrong with slower-style imo. The best thing about Metallica is that they are versatile. I would get really bored listening to Of Wolf and Man version 30. Really, I never understood the bands that found their style and then modified ONE FRIKING song just slightly and throw new lyrics on and ask for cash.
I like that they play songs that are not a carbon copy of each other: Unforgiven, Sabbra Cadabra, 2x4, Disposable Heroes, Ain't my ****, Breadfan, King Nothing, Seek and destroy etc. That's why I listen to them.
Edit: Maybe Unforgiven isn't the best, they have such a wide collection of great songs and they are actually different from each other so it's rather hard to compare and pin point whats best but...m3h spl33n.
Hmmm... Over the last 15 years they have pretty much gotten slower and slower, more and more pop. They wrote the book (with Megadeth) on speed metal in the 80's. I would say rather than versatile, they have become boring and predictably radioish, in their overwhelming quest for more and more money. They stopped needing record label or mass-media approval years ago, when they became so overwhelmingly rich. Now they just make albums to be more rich, and competely forgotten what made them good. They are the ultimate sellouts, and I show my displeaure by urinating on them, metaphorically.
That is all.
I have to agree that they've gone in to more and more commercial way but it's still understandable that they have to change their style if they want to make new music. From my experience you get bored of playing one type of music very quickly. When I started playing guitar I used to play Nirvana, that's right, I've never regret anything more in my life than that but LUCKILY I got bored very fast because that pop-"moderate-rock" piece of crap was really repetative. Then I played Metallica and it's still really good to play because their songs are not all same style. They've gone slower all the time but prolly I couldn't play same sort of fast-heavy 24/7, it would become boring.
Another example is Joe Satriani, I don't like his music very much but nowadays he plays that super-fast-guitar-solo thing because any other would bore him. He's too good. Maybe metallica got bored of playing same type of music, maybe they wanted more money, dunno. All that matters in the end is my avatar, so just look at it and you feel much better.
I r so cruel
Edit-ps: Even if a band is a sellout doesn't mean you can't like his music. I think every band in the universe wants only money and fame and to achieve that, they must do compromises.
Speaking of Metallica, St Anger and the never ending quest for more cash. Clickeh
