Oh please do Hum!!! I wanna hear a story from the greatest ever playtest! Oh pretty please! Come on Hum you tell the best stories and so do you Coil, come on tell us a story.
No, they don't teach soldiers to cook off grenades in the army. This is because a grenade isn't a finely tuned instrument, there's delay but the exact time a grenade will explode varies.
How they teach soldiers to keep their grenades from being thrown back at them, is to richochet that grenade off walls, making the enemy run around trying to catch it, and by that time they're dead.
Movies and games push forward the idea that you can cook grenades (heck, even the army's game does that) but the reality is, you don't want that grenade near you after the safety handle is released.
Well, I was a grenade instructor for 6 months (which took 20 years off my life). And we did teach 'cooking off' during the training, especially for urban combat.
This was the USMC though, so maybe they do things differently in the US Army.

tommyd gets the speed award for one of the fastest marine victories I've ever seen.
We spawned in Bast, and I decided to jet over to the water hive and see if anyone was home. For some reason, 2 or 3 others had the same idea, so we had a respectable force heading in there. "Atmospheric Processing - clear! Moving on to the hive!" We rounded the heavily-infested corner to see... no hive! Fabulous, a hive room for the taking. "Water Hive is clear, tommy!" Tommy wasted no time in dropping a CC as a builder ran into the room. We quickly shredded him, but he was soon followed by skulks. CC went up... Infantry Portal... Resource Tower... soon, we had a handy little base and control of 3 nodes! From there, Tommy rushed to phase gate tech, and we quickly took and secured the Engine Room with a phase gate and several turrets.
It was just the Refinery now; we met up at the Water Hive and headed down the ladder, through the tram corridor and T junction, until we reached the Refinery. The battle was short, and ugly. The aliens had few RPs - only enough to set up a pair of offensive turrets and defensive chambers, which we made short work of. A turret factory went up, followed by two sentry guns and another phase gate.
With skulks spawning right around us (the new randomized respawn means you never know quite where they'll appear - just near the hive), we laid into the hive with nothing but our LMGs and pistols. I exhausted 390 rounds - the entirety of my LMG and pistol - and jumped through the phase gate to re-ammo. As I switched to pistol to refill that as well, a tooltip dropped onto my screen: "Team One has won the game!"
And it was over, just like that. The aliens never had a chance.

While this may not be the proper thread to bring this up in I was wondering if there will be enough servers to support the number of downloads? I have told dozens about the game and the release date and I am begining to worry about heavy download traffic impeading NS release and play. I am sure precautions have been taken but...
Is it a bad thing to dream about being a fade? Because, I kid you not, I had one the other night. I can't remember it too well, but it was awesome. Its all a good thing this is coming out so soon, other wise I am pretty sure insanity would set in. By the way, coil, you rule. Those stories are a good way to keep me from snapping.
Last night I dreamed about being a marine... I remember distinctly spawning, then screaming into voice com "Who's going to be commander?" and then someone got into the CC, but wasn't doing anything to help the team, and there were skulks all over the place and I quickly ran out of LMG ammo...
I've been reading to much about this game. Dreaming about it and I've never even played it.
Tommyd is definitely the king of the unexpected marine rush. We played on NS_Caged a few days ago, and tommy quickly set up an infantry portal, armory, and observatory. Using the observatory's scanner sweep, tommy then checked out all three hive rooms, and sent us marines off to the sewer hive room, which was the one alien hive. The hive room was strangely undefended, with only one turret which quickly fell to our LMG's. Tommy set up a turret factory and a sentry, and the entire squad opened up on the hive. The hive quickly died. The aliens totally didn't expect this, so we got a lot of "WTF, where'd our hive go?" over say_text. It took quite a while to finish off the aliens since they kept jumping between hives, but we won.
a few short days and we's be posting our OWN tales from the frontlines... <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::asrifle::'><!--endemo-->

Example of a n00bs story...AHEM:
It was a close game. For the most part, it was 6v7,6 for marines, 7 for aliens. I was an alien. I was new at NS, and didn't know what to expect. Well, I am walking around in my lvl 1 form, when I suddenly spot 2 marines. Thinking "What the hey, I'll try to take one down" I jump them both, and succesfully kill em. "Wow, I am better at this than I thought." Well, my teamates had got 2 hives up and running, so I decided to try a flying lerk. It was awesome, I flew all around, dropping spikes over unsuspecting marines. It was almost as if I was unstoppable. Eventually, we got hive #3 up, and I decided to try out this infamous Onos I had been hearing about. Once I evlolved into an Onos, I knew that I was gonna be #1. Just then someone joined the marines side, some guy named Da Sarge. I thought "Hey, one more guy for me to hunt down" So, I rush into the marine base, and kill of pretty much all of em. When I see the CC, I went to destroy it, but not before Da Sarge typed "Not so fast,JOO N00B!!!" He pops up behind me and starts firing at me with his unstoppable shotfun. I kept charging at him, but he kept dodging and weaving out of my way. Eventually...he took me down. He got back to the CC and managed to make an infantry portal. The marines got back full strength and won the game.
THE MORAL:Don't mess with Da Sarge n his shotfun....even if you an Onos. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
The morale? Don't post stupid stuff that is not only completely impossible to occur (one marine beating an ohnos), nor Fan-fiction, (as this is not a real story) in this thread.

That *could* have been the ending... but let's see what REALLY happened (Note: this is a fictional account. Any and all resemblance between a character in this story to an actual person is entirely intentional. This story does not belong in this thread).
"As the game was 6Mv7A most of the way through, it was a bit unbalanced - the marines only had 5 grunts on the ground. The aliens had little trouble keeping them penned in while they got three hives online, and by the time it came up most of the aliens were *swimming* in resources. 3 evolved to Onos, and joined by a pair of Fades congregated outside the Airlock in Bast. It was a tight fit as the 5 monsters took the lock around; the marines knew they were in trouble when three primal screams echoed from that entrance to the spawn.
The aliens swarmed into the room, quickly annihilating the turrets and the Infantry Portal shortly thereafter. Suddenly all the marines respawned! The Commander had used an emergency Distress Beacon in an attempt to turn the tide, but it was no use; they could have been cardboard cutouts for the speed at which the aliens tore them apart. One of the Onos, who had taken the brunt of the assault, was Redeemed back to the Refinery hive, where he sat waiting for the hive to heal him. The CC was soon destroyed by the remaining aliens, but the game didn't end.
The Onos in the refinery pulled up the scoreboard; it showed a single marine, "Da Sarge," left alive. "Mmm... meatpop," he said over voicecomm, and his teammates chuckled from various corners of the map. Just then, the Onos heard the sound of a jetpack nearby, and the marine appeared on the upper catwalk, sporting a jetpack and wielding a shotgun. "He's here in Refinery... I call dibs!" the Onos said over voicecomm, to more chuckles. The marine switched to pistol and emptied a clip into the Onos from long range, then jumped to the floor and began pumping out shotgun rounds.
The Onos grunted and charged, but Da Sarge fired up his jetpack and hopped over the Onos' head as he reloaded. He landed and recommenced the attack, again hopping over the behemoth to avoid the charge. The third time the Onos charged, he once again jetpacked up to avoid the hit... but the Onos had stopped charging. He looked up, and Da Sarge hear a soft *smack!* as the Paralyze projectile hit him, right on target. Suddenly his jetpack shut down as his body went numb, unable to control it. Helpless, he watched the ground approach with startling speed. Spinning his view around, he caught a glimpse of the Onos... standing there, watching. He hit the ground with a fatal *crunch*, and as the screen faded to black he heard the creature let out a low, casual chuckle. Foolish marine.
