Almost forgot one of my most favorite AvP2 moments as an alien. We were on a marine evac map, I was with 4 fellow aliens stalking the marine squad. We'd just executed a failed atempt to kill all the marines at once by ambushing them. I was crawing along the exterior of the structure when I reached a window. I immidiately stopped and peered in to see if the squad would head for the dropship or the apc. Luckily for me, they were heading for the apc. Unfortunately, I made a stupid move and shouted it to my team mates over the public chat. Immidiately, the marines turned 180 and headed towards the airlock, but to my suprise, about 6 fellow aliens flew out from behind them and killed about 6 of the 15 marines, leaving 9 to kill. Of course, all the aliens were ripped apart my gunfire. I headed back towards to interior when I heard one of my teammates shout "3 more down!" Giddy with excitement, I decided to stowe myself away in the airlock and await any marines who did indeed make it back, and one did. One marine was left, and he didn't look in any mood to die, as he was armed with a smartgun. He backpedaled into the airlock and shut the doors, unaware I was crouhed on the ceiling, my jaws aligned with his head. I snapped once and he was dead, killing the entire marine team. Needless to say, we won.

Here's one:

I was in Bast's airlock with several of my teammates. As we were turning, we saw a halfway cloaked Fade. We started firing, but the Fade was better than us. I was the only one left if I recall (if there was someone else alive then tell me&#33. I emptyed my clip into the Fade and seeing that I only had 27 or health left, I knew I was going to die, but I was going down fighting.

Then I readied my pistol hoping to get at least one more shot in when I realized I pulled out my knife! I thought, "I don't have the time to get the pistol now! Charge!" As you can guess, close quarter combat with a Fade is not a good idea, however with luck I took him out in only a few hits. Patting myself on the back, I went to look for some health only to killed by the next alien I ran into (anti-climatic huh?).

I had been commanding on NS_Bast much earlier, and had been beaten out left and right. Every attack proved poorly timed, We would arrive just as the aliens did at each respective hive room. All I had intended to do was secure a hive early. But now it was pretty much too late. Every time my LMG marines spawned and attempted to take a hive, it had just been overtaken and was guarded fiercely. I was frustrated with my marines, but it was probobly my fault for not cooling my aggression and holding back a minute, securing nodes and tech.
Well, we were behind and 3 hives were coming online. I dropped a bunch of mines and guns, recycled the scattered assets I had lying aroudn the map, and told my men to "set up a perimeter, get up this Prototype lab". I intended to click JetPacks but accidentally hit Power Armor instead. Research began. One of my men asked "Jetpacks coming soon?!" "uh . . .yeah. gimme some time" I replied. "Lets try for engine hive again." My men gathered up, full of resignation. Motion tracking completed research just as they entered. The area outside the airlock was swarming with Blue Rings, some drifting, some sitting still. My men seemed doomed. In spite of the odds, they blasted away a few Xenos outside the airlocks, amid a storm of alien turret fire. They stepped out and many were webbed. Typign Madly "KILL THEM ALL!", I watched as my marines futily attempted to hold back the incoming lvl 3s and 4s. After investing all that money on guns, I didnt have enough rps to keep my men alive long enough. I scrolled back to my P-Lab and started Jetpacks researching.
I scrolled back, sure enough, my men had died. I was angry with my marines, even though any failure is always at least 50% the commander's fault. I dropped a shotgun for myself and slammed the logout button on the console. We were just about out of Rps and I was furstrated. At wicks end. A collection of bad luck and bad decisions had put me in this position and I regretted not being prudent. Regardless, I stormed off to the airlock. "Come with me, were going through the airlock". My mariens followed reluctantly. "Its personal, this time" I said, half sarcastically. One of my men replied "weeeee" in a dead pan voice. The airlock spun and I looked at my tracking. It was a blue mass at this point. "####" I typed. Several marines already started laughing ahead of time over voice comm. A lvl 4 looked up from a crouched position at the end of the Atrium, and Blinked right to the airlock, tearing apart 1 marine. I spun on him BOOM! chi-click BOOM!. Slow motion now, hes tearing toward my other marine, backed up against the wall unloading HMG bullets into the Fade. chi-click BOOM! chi-click BOOM! He tears through the next marine like butter, Im the last one left. Back pedaling out of the airlocking and aiming. BOOM! chi-click BOOM! chi-cli . . SLASH! SLASH! my view fades to black.
Well . .thats it then. We've lost, I concede to myself. No alchemy of rage and shotgun will net me a win. These aliens have out evolved and out done me at every turn. I spawn and fly up into the vent, which peeks out into the atrium outside the airlock. I fly down and listen. A deafening roar echoes up through the vent from the atrium and I hear stomping. "Lvl 5 en route, airlock". One of my marines replies "Yeah, we all can hear him Humb". I fire with my LMG, just to annoy him. He shrugs off the shots. I unload everythign I have, but i know its futile. He paralyzes me and I watch helplessly as a skulk runs up to me and bites off my face. Before I can even respawn, the base is dead. Aliens win.

good story humbaba and its good to see that the commander has an important effect although I think this effect will decrease when the best way to win on a map has been decided.

aliens win

Well . .there will always be certain areas that are key to victory, and many of those are obvious right off the bat (any room with 1 entrance and an RP node, and room with 2 nodes, Hive areas). There will also be areas to avoid (Any room with a ton of cover, any room with more than 4 or 5 entrances, any room with too many vents). However, the opposing team will anticipate you grabbing for the more appealing places, so its a balance of guessing which hives are empty, which rooms will you enemy go for, and whether or not its worth securing an area to prevent it from changign hands. It's like a grand strategy game reduced in scale to the size of a space ship. There will always be many divers routes to winning simply because EVERY time you play, your enemy is different and makes different moves.

Just a short little question though, if the commander has a big impact then how do you decide who is the commander? I mean when the public realease comes out I'm sure there will be like a billion people just fighting to be the commander.
• GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
and then after the first attempt, very few will fight for the position, and the main problem will be finding someone to be the commander, I'm told commanding is a very stressful time.

I was sitting waiting for the forums to be up in IRC and I had an idea! What if I told stories in episodes. This particular game was really divided into three sections, and it was pretty extensive. I'll write each one up as I go, heres numba 1.

Game on NS_Romana. Episode 1.
I Spawned and looked around. The room was dark and crowded. A massive barrel shaped Hive room. We were just done climbing the tech tree and securing a hive, by the look of things, though we had yet to get jetpacks or power armor. Our commander was Plaguebearer and we were facing off against a 3 or 4 aliens. There were 3 of us. Our minibase within the hive was built on a massive barrel in the center of the hive, there was barely space to go between structures, and turrets lined the sides. A mixed bag, because, while easier to defend, and alien can easily take cover from your turrets AMONG the buildings.
Plaguebearer asks us "Which do you guys want, Jetpacks or power armor?" My fellow marine answers "Jetpacks, for mobility". Jetpacks begin researching. Just then, a Skulk runs up the side of the barrel and manages to get one bite on the turret. Before I know it, we have a lvl 3 flitting around the cavernous room. He swoops in low and sends spikes into me, and I spray the air above me blindly with LMG bullets. My fellow marine blasts the lvl 3 and it spirals back to a vent to nurse its wounds. I jump down and Jetpacks finish Upgrading in mid air, I break my fall. "LVL 4!" I look above me. 2 acid rockets sing over my head and slam into our turrets. I hit my jetpacks and take off, straight up. Jerking to the left, I strafe the Fade with a round of LMG bullets and he switches his attention to me. An acid rocket flys by my head as I swoop back down into a pit and reload. The turrets are still blazing away at the lvl 4, but he is popping in and out and avoiding turret fire. I take off again and, drawing my pistol, Unload a full clip as fast as I can click. This time, the Fade know whats coming and unloads a volley of Acid Rockets at me. My life is knocked out of me in Mid-Jump and I flail to the ground.
This looks bad, two skulks are charging up the barrel structure as I wait to spawn. They have taken out all but one turret. They are hitting the spawn portal when I come out, and I take off right to the top of the 5 or 6 story hive room. I land back on the barrel, a good 50 feet from the ground. My fellow marine is flushing a Lerk out of a vent, and I land back down, stitching the Skulk with bullets. He rolls over and dies. Next, I draw my knife. It's fam, and he is preoccupied with our spawn portal. I Land down next to him and slash him apart, brutally. Well, before i know it, the hive is up. During the confusion, a lvl 2 must have slipped in and started it growing. The ########! we cant hit it till it comes online. I crouch at the side of the barrel and wait.
Fam spawns and I open fire, he strafes my bullets and shoots straight up the barrel. I reload, midway there, I realize that its too slow. I whip out my knife. Power armor has finished upgrading, and I withstand enough bites to win the melee war with Fam as he spins around me.
The lerk that was beign flushed out of the Vent flys in chomping, right toward my face, intent on avenging Fam. He tears me apart as I pull the trigger.
By now, Im sick of crappy guns. We are a bit low on resources, but Plague gives me a shotgun anyway. Well, Whenever I get that shotty in my hands, something clicks in me. I become like a well oiled machine. The lerk flys over head, spiking the turrets we are attempting to get up to take out the hive. Our crowded mini base on top of the barrel is getting a wee bit less crowded at this point. I look up, see the little feet of the lerk. Jerk my gun up and BOOM!. SPLATTER!. They dont call it a boom stick for nothing. I take off and look down, there is a skulk penetrating toward the spawn portal. I let off a shotgun round, as I land by him. I pull out the good ol boot knife. Well, its worked twice before. SLASH SLASH SLASH. Dead Skulk. Like carving turkey. I feel sorry for fammeh though.
The Hive is still up and I walk to the edge of the barrel. There are two skulks running up it. I jump off onto the skulk's hitbox and blast through him, fallign downward, slowly like a feather with the aid of my jetpacks. I hear the sounds of Chomping and fly upwards, our base is Dead. Fam has managed to chomp up the whole thing. I fly toward him and unload a shell, then realize I had forgotten to reload. I begin reloading and am chomped to pieces as I land by Fam.
Nothing in the way of them getting three hives now. Its only a matter of time before they get the resources for them. Luckily, and unfortunately, the map is just about out of resources. ALMOST. I spawn in the old marine start, and we are in DEEP trouble . . . .

Hard to find a commander? RIght, iam sure there are like 2 or 3 people who haven't played starcraft, or command and conquer, or hell, even homeworld. There will never be a shortage of commanders, just good ones.

Personally iam going to try commander first chance i get. This is the most interactive strategy game i could ever hope for, now if i could only get some people who don't mind losing

Humbaba makes it sound as if he was a amazingly skilled, but the truth is, I had already taken down 4 turrets, an armory, an arms lab, an observatory, the marines command center, and I was about to get the spawn gate when I was knifed. Thanks to joev for the Lerk cover, we had killed the Marines base. One knife kill does nothing when you have no base.

... well, I'm sure Humbaba will tell more about that in the next part of his story.

Episode 2 (new readers, refer back to previous page for previous episode).
So where was I . . . . ah yeah. I spawned and looked around at my new surroundings. 1 spawn portal, 1 armory, 1 CC, 1 T Fac, 2 turrets. All of this crammed into a space about 128 to 256 units wide (very small). This is the CC room of Romana, and is raised above the marine start and can be reached by climbing 2 ladders.
Well . . better get out to a hive, I say to myself. I climb down the ladder. A roar of splatty gushy sounds issue from my speakers and before I can turn around, I fall from the ladder and die.
Oh . . I see how it is now. I spawn and look down, through two small windows in the floor of the CC room. The entire marine start is LAYERED in turrets. I see something picking its way through the bizarre alien forest. A lerk.
I'm feeling pretty cheeky, I run to the ladder. Ready this time, I crouch and drop down the chute, ignoring the ladder. Volleys of alien muck spray past me, and I land in a recessed area in the floor. Re-orienting myself, I look up. The lerk is coasting in towards me. Frightened, I jump up and try to make a break past the Offense Chamber forest. Suffice to say, I didnt make it. My body was dissolved and flayed by bizarre alien chemicals.
K, 2 deaths and no results. This just about balances out whatever semblance of Skill I had earlier. I look at my HUD. 20 rps. "Plague, lets get another spawn portal up, use numbers and do suicide rush". Plague tells me he was already planning on it, hops in the CC, and sets one down. While building, we repel incursions. Lvl 1s and 3s popping their heads up through the narrow ladder entryway and promplty being sent back to the Defense chamber (heals you)/Offense chamber (Alien Turret) forest.
We are still holed up, but have yet to run into any lvl 4s. That can only mean that A: The aliens have no resources or B: Theyre spending them on getting hives up. Regardless, theyll soon get a new hive up and that will mean trouble. Not to mention they might find an unused node. Plague scans the map and comes up with a brilliant plan. He tells us over voice comm. I dotn recall the specific wording but it was something like . .
1. Save enough rps and get a siege turret up in the command room. (this clears the way for our escape from confinement).
2. Equip one of us with a welder.
3. Travel to the east side of the map, where, plague informs me, there is a node.
4. Set up resource tower.
If we can secure that resource tower, we can get enough resources and get big guns, then we take out hives and WIN! It just might work . .
We sit in the Command room, and plague drops the siege. Ah . .this beauty will be our savior. 20 seconds or so later, it whirls around and BOOM! I watch through the window as alien hive structures get shook apart by the Automated Siege Cannon. It clears out and we drop down. Plague recycles something and gets enough resources for 1 shotgun and 2 welders. I grab the shotty and a welder, and we walk to the edge of the marine start, cratered and scarred, ready to put Plague's plan into action . . .
