@blag, what about aiming though?
with a mouse/trackball (I am tack ball man) you have smooth 'i put the ball here the aim is there' with a joypad/stick you have 'i push it in this direction and my aim will moe in that dir'
for me it ocmes down to the fact that with k/mouse I can aim/move better I own a gravis extreminater, it collects dust... literaly I have tried for the longest times to get a game pad to be as good as my track ball for aiming, it just dosn't work. Though it is true that games pads hame more buttons and sliders and rudders that are esay to reach and program up with my game pad I have a dpad, an joystick, an hat, 6 right thumb buttons, 2 triggers, 2 sholder rudders and a throttle. All of wich can be compleatly configured... oh and with the press of one button I can have a second full config on all of those buttons. I REALLY liked this idea and tried to get it to work, but what it comes down to is the HL training course, with K/mouse I can speed through it with the gamepad I am slugish, it just don't work
the one thing the game pad roked for was decent freespace (you need to controll like 5 diff aspects of movement and with the dpad, joystick, hat, rudders, and throttle I could do that. something impossible with a k/mosue combo)

Games like MGS/MGS2 are used to have a game pad. Have played MGS1 on my comp, runs smooth and so on but the controller really sucks compared to the game pad IMO.
