    Indeed... during Gulf War 1 an A-10 took a SAM to the right wing and still made it back to base.

    It's coz of the two big assed engins strapped to the back of it. Wouldn't be surprised if it could fly without wings.

    Hehe, that reminds me of a story I heard on the news.

    A British helicopter became the victim of some 'friendly fire' when it was fired upon by an American hummvee column. They realised their mistake when they heard an angry British voice shouting over the radio;

    "WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW AN IRAQI IN A F*****G HELICOPTER???"

    Im British btw <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thank god for the titanium cockpit. Leave it to the US to make a flying tank.

    its the only aircraft designs that was actualy designed and built AROUND the huge nose cannon.

    I've always found it strange that despite all sorts of new technologies, older aircraft still fill roles better than new ones. (A-10, B-52, etc)

    Yeah... tapping the trigger is just about all the pilot can do, as extended bursts have the potential of fusing the moving parts on the gun. :\

    yeah.. and holding the trigger for a longer time could slow down the plane..thats another reason for the powerfull engines,and the very god low-stall aerodynamics of the a10

    The warthog has about 10 seconds worth of ammo if the pilot held the tirgger, The damn thing would melt in less than 2 <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Gotta love the A-10. A plane that is built to be destroyed and still make it home. Hey pilot-guy, does sitting in a 3/4 TON bathtub of titanium give you that cozy feeling?

    Btw., anyone ever hear the story of the french Mirage that accelerated too fast on a diving strafing run and ended up getting hit by its own cannon rounds?

  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
    it dosn't really do 'range'

    it does air to ground destrunction (yes it is called the a10 tank killer for a very good reason)

    oh, and the point of making it so that you can fire 10 secs but it would melt in under 2?

    fire, blow up tank, pause, fire blow up another tank, pause

    rinse repeate

    though there is a more disturbing weapons system out there (<a href='http://www.metalstorm.com/' target='_blank'>metal storm</a> they have vids of a gun fireing 1mill rnds per sec, the vid you want is the 36 Barrel Prototype)

    i know metal storm..
    i dont think theres another usements for metal storm as for anti tank claymore mines... or anti air stuff..
    i try to find this old railgun testrange pics where they fired with a huge truck trailer mounted railgun (that was fixed with 60 tons concrete blocks) at a m60 with sheeps as crew.. eeww.. the impact and exit hole was really tiny... 12mm.. the sheeps gettin sucket out trough this hole... a 100 meter long blood splat behind the tank..
    the gun used huge amounts of power, and the copper rails where molten after this test firing...
    the gun was just scrap after this experiment.. not a very good weapon <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The main thing I thought was cool abought the Metal storm stuff was the 'intelegence' part

    smart mines? they only will destroy nme armour/personel? no need for cevilian casualties? simple clean up, no left over mines to plague generations to come? sounds good

    but yah, 1mill rnds/sec is sorta pointless when mounted (aparently they tried to mount one on a truck and it knocked it over <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)

    Yeah, but if you get the ballistics right, you can park a semi a mile or so outside of a city, infested with snipers, and just unload.

    You'll take some out in the fire, but you'll scare the living hell out of the rest of them.
  • MarocMaroc Join Date: 2002-08-31 Member: 1255Members
    I got a question not about the A-10... but about it's gun... now if that gun is so damned powerful (which it obviously is) why don't they mount it on tanks?
