Trying to phase out a jet that has proved itself many times in the close air support role is just stupid <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
High speed jets can only do so much... One well placed shot and they go down. Its at that time you need a flying tank... The Hog'
That's why I don't like officers. They don't often have the advantage of being a soldier beforehand to know just how essential some things can be, no matter how insignificant they seem.
What the military needs is mobile office buildings Monty Python style any third world rag head would poop himself if he saw a 45 storie building rolling towards him
Jumpin' jiminy jesus. That is one big bullet. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

this is what i 'heard' but the source is less then reliable..
one in every 7-9 rounds is incindary... and so cos it hits so fast... it weorks the metal and punctures tank then the incindeary goes in and effectively cleans it out from inside...

This is what I wrote earlier in response to your question ^
More likely, its either a penetrating hit or it's not, rather than lots of bullets weakening the structure then one getting through.
The incindiary is for area effect; thats the sparks you see on the ground when the round hits. It's a miched round which will ignite flammable things some distance away from the point of impact. All the armor piercing rounds (if hitting the ground) just burys itself.
The DU creates it's own fireball after penetrating the tank, you don't need incindiary to do that. The metal dust created by the friction against the armor when the round enters the tank ignites, sending a jet of molten material in after the round.

Incidentally, if you want an amazing film to watch,
grab some .avi of Tornado's going through their standard approach practise. They use the natural valleys over here (UK) to perform practise maneuveurs, and they go through them <i>fast</i> and <b>low</b>....
Breathtaking stuff to watch, especially if you're stood on one of the hilltops, watching these jets pass by <b>beneath</b> you.... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
