Scariest Gaming Moments

Has anyone ever played a game were there was something were it was just so freaky you had to stop playing it?

I remember one night when I was at my friends house and I was watching him play Metal Gear Solid,
We found an easter egg that freaked us out.

It was 4:30AM and I had been watching him play it for hours on end. We were both really tired. Suddenly during one of the scripted movie events the screen got all fuzzy and the characters voices started to get all messed up sounding. Then it happened.

I dont remember what the mission was about but the characters would suddenly say something not understandable, then they said. "You've been playing this game too long... garble garble. Take a break get a life.... garble garble, Then the cut scene continued on like nothing happened. My friend and eye stared at each other all wide eyed.

This next one isnt scary but its funny.

Also way, way, back when myself and 2 others were playing the Half Life demo (called Uplink, if you remember) we were looking into a dark hallway. We heard that sound a head crab makes (at the time we had no idea what it was) All three of us lean close to the screen. Suddenly head crab jumps out. All three of us yell in surprise and jump back. The results: 2 Heads knocking together, 1 spilled can of soda, friend playing the game in the middle back handing me in the face with his mouse hand, and me falling backwards out of chair ( I was tilting back in the chair)

    Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

my character (a monk) walks into a room...and his head explodes. A few steps forward, his arm falls off. A few more, his other arm falls off. a few more steps and his torso explodes.

my character (a journalist) walks up a flight of stairs, his head falls off, I have him pick it up and then it says "To be...or not to be, whether it is nobler in the mind".

and the walls always seem to bleed...especially after I shoot them.

lol! I remember how that game did that to you!

    Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

I watched my friend play while his Sanity was totally low and here's some of the things that happened.

My friend learns a spell and his torso explodes.

My friend walks into a room and there's a guy that hung himself and we check it, the head looks up and a scream's heard while the game fades white and the body and the Nuce(SP?) is gone.

The screen screen goes black and the GCN logo thing plays, simulating the game reset, but didn't.

My friend walked into a room and started falling through the ground.

My friend found a room STASHED with ammo and whatnot, but then the character goes "This can't be happening." and we appear in the room before that one without anything.

That's the only game really with "creepy" stuff. They Hunger gave me chills at times. But that's about it.

Wow I jsut went to that site and watched some of the films some of the players and fans made for it.

    Freaky.

That bleeding wall thing reminds me of the nightmare scenes in Max Payne. With the baby's screaming cries and the bouncing floating ABC blocks in the dead babies room.

I wish I could be scared by a game...The closest I've been is when I went down a hall really cautiously the first time i played Aliens versus Predator...Then you see that they're so easy to kill you just beat the crap outta them. Face huggers were annoying there.

That game had excellent atmosphere for the marines, and mild atmosphere for predators...when you're an alien...it's just "Yo, marines, wanna be owned?"

    Other remotely scary stuff...hmmm....

Read a strategy guide for Resident Evil, and I read "You have to be quick in this next room, because there's a giant snake." Well, I was kind of apprehensive about entering the room...until I actually did, that snake looked like a giant piece of <expletive deleted> with a snake head, and then I died cause I couldn't stop laughing.

I'll sensor my own <expletive deleted>ing self, no one else has the right.

I got scared while I was playing Nocturne for the first time. I was just walking through this dark hall without my flashlight on, and nothing had even really happened yet. I was like 10 minutes into the level without seeing a thing. Then as I walk down some steps, a zombie or mummy just kinda burst through the wall.

I jumped outta my chair, but composed myself again quickly enough to blast the zombie with my shotgun. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ah man, you win dude, you win. Of course at that moment most of us were still happy living in oblivion and anticipation. When we actually <b>played</b> the game, that was another story.

I was playing System Shock 2 for the first time. Even though it was the middle of the day, that made it perhaps even creepier due to the fact thatI hadn't bothered to adjust my gamma and it was a little difficult to see.

I had just walked into a small, dark room with a lot of machinery, I squinted to see if there was anything in the room, but was having a hard time due to the screen glare. Suddenly, out of nowhere I hear "The many are STRONG!!!!!!". I whirl around, just in time to see a horrific face, and then I get struck by it's weapon and... well, I didn't die. I managed to regain enough of my composure to club the thing with my wrench, but it remains the first and ONLY time I have ever been scared witless by a game of any sort.

    Long live System Shock 2.

    AvP 2

    Marine

After 3 aliens tear my squad apart I rush into a room, close the doors and lock them. Outside I can hear alot of scratching and hissing. I can also hear noises above and below me. My motion sensor is going berserk. I hear a strange noise in the back of my head, turn around, only to be greeted by a hungry alien. In the immortal words of Private Hudson; "game over man, game over!" I damn near shat myself over that.

Has to be System Shock 2.

I think it was deck 5 Recreation. It was late at night when I usually play I only had 1 gun but for some odd reason more ammo than usual. I was just walking down a corridor and then bumped into 3 hybrids with shotguns and a maid thing that explodes. Naturaly I gunned them down, well most of them that was until the gun craped out on me. I paniced and ran. I found the mess hall and hid there when suddenly a huge security bot came out of the wall with no warning. Again I ran becuase i hadnt had time to fix the gun. So I hid in the primary elevator becuse they couldnt get in <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> . Then on deck 3 hydroponics, there was that ghost of the woman being operated on *shudders*.

mine is noobish, but here goes.

Resident Evil 3: You go through a door, and you hear the music chime in. The chase music. Nemesis (and for those who haven't seen nemisis, go find him. BTW he can kill you in two swipes, hence the running) pops out and starts to attack me. I run back through the door, and only can take a few steps before he bursts through the door. I had to run through a whole bunch of alleys to get away from him, I never looked back.

I was pantin' after that one. There have also been numerous times where headcrabs jump at me from the dark, but other than that not much.

Edit: Shockwave, what is that from, and can you elaborate a bit?

You found Resident Evil scary? Haha! That whole series is such a yawner, in case anyone hasn't noticed, I've been playing SS2, one time I found a turret, took cover behind a box and switch to AP rounds, jumped out and took half of it's health down and took cover again, reloaded, jumped out again... "Your flesh is weak" *Wham!*... I had to stop playing and go to the bathroom then. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Fantastic. Actually most of my scariest, jump out of your seat moments have taken place during Half- Life when a headcrab would leap out at me from nowhere. Every time I replay it I do so after many months, so it still retains its shock factor.

Scariest moment, though, took place in StarCraft. I'd never really played an RTS game around when I got that (aside from dabbling a bit in Empire Earth - but I got that about the same time as StarCraft). In one early mission you have to defend your base for about ½ an hour against these alien enemies. I only did a few small group excursions and the tiniest bit of base-building.

About 1 minute before my rescue arrived an unbelievably huge swarming army of these aliens ran into my base. More than an 8 gorge team with triple-upgraded adrenaline spewing babblers non-stop. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> And that just scared the bejesus out of me. I ran - I swear I took my main character and ran away, let them destroy my base and got him picked up when time elapsed.

I tell you I had nightmares about that afterwards.

Well, the first one was when I was playing starcraft, and they cut to the movie scene during one of the original campaigns. These marines and a ghost were cautiously boarding one of their abandoned science vessels. They enter this large room with a nuke. Suddenly they hear a noise, and they all look around. One of them says "Watch out! The zerg are about."

Then, one of the marines a couple seconds later says "I got your zerg right here.. heh heh heh." And lights a cigarette. Promptly after he said that, his head explodes by a hydralisk bursting through his head and drags him up to the ceiling. Then more come, and finally the ghost is forced to nuke himself and the aliens.

The scariest thing was that part where his head explodes. Not so much the "scary" factor, but it just made me jump 5 feet in the air the first time I watched it. Anybody else experience this one?

The 2nd one wasn't really a game moment. I was watching the opening credits to "Tales from the Crypt" where they enter the haunted house. Right at the part where the crypt keeper pops out of his coffin and gives a creepy laugh, my brother sneaks up behind me and does the same laugh and putting his hands on my shoulders at the same time. ...
I still haven't forgiven him for that one.

    Oi! I almost forgot.

I was playing Half-Life last night, and got to the part where you see the first gargantuan, (or whatever, the big blue thing). It scared the crap outta me when you had to lure him into the electrical current, having him chase you but not know how far behind he was. I never looked back...

I'm only that far because I'm a nubcake, though.
