Reduced Particle Effects For Improved Performance

MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Another tweak for low-enders</div> As Fam pointed out the other day in the models forum, the little ns.ps file in your NS directory is editable, and determines how the particles act. Attached is a version of the file with the particle density for all effects halved, and to be honest it's difficult to see much of a difference (at least, it all still "feels" right) which probably means it could be reduced further. Admittedly it's been a long time since I felt any graphics lag due to phases and whatnot, but I figured I may as well post it anyway in case it helps a few people out.

I'm not especially familiar with the file consistancy checks, so just out of interest - Would this file be blocked by servers with file consistancy enabled? And if so would i have to go through the trouble of replacing the file with the deault in order to join these servers?

I see no reason why it would pose a problem (it would be the something close to consistency checks insisting you had the default config) but I haven't tested it on consistency-on servers, I'm afraid. Just rename the default (something like "ns0.ps" would do the trick) before you pop this new one in your NS directory, so you can easily change back to it afterwards if you need to.

I always rename my originals to <filename.ext>.bak when I put a custom something-or-other in. Means all I have to do to go back to FC1 is switch them around. Personally, I'd love to see someone come up with a program that will do it automatically.

The other option is to keep two installations of NS; one with the defaults, one with your customs.

Yah, I always give my originals an apostrophe when I install a replacement (e.g. v_mg'.mdl) - having a simple system like that for keeping track of the original files is very handy.

Armoury for AHL does this. It's very good. But only works for AHL.

But If anyone wants to contact the creator guys, and request to do a conversion, I'd be all for it.

nope, Java operates in it's own little environment, you can pull things into it, but normaly you can't put them back out... (this is what my CS teacher told us many many many times, so i dunno)

Thanks souris... nice spot for this too, becuase models/skins isn't exactally where you'd want to find this one...

Dont worry the program is being writtern right now.

Anyway I'm adding a quick search option in for common values in half life (basically just ripping everything out of the cfg files), but I want to know if there is anything extra you guys might want?

(btw if it wasnt clear aswell as backing up your files you can edit easier, well when its finnished)

There aer hundreds of programs written in Java - Opera for one. That has no trouble creating and saving files. I think you're talking about applets

This will only work for you if you're hosting the game. Your local ns.ps does NOT determine the particle systems you see when you play, only when you host. Uncheck the "high detail particle systems" option for an improvement.

@Delarosa, you have no idea what you can do with java, and this proramm would only rename files, thats all.. and thats easy

Just discovered that this doesn't work, by the way. The ns.ps file you have on your computer only determines what you'll see in games you create. On any other servers you'll see the default particle effects, because it looks like ns.ps is a server-side file.

(edit: heh, just saw Flay's post)

(edit #2: if you're talking to me down there, demonmerc, what the fluff are you on about?)

    don't read much, do you?

Your Java teacher was full of it, they just looked at plain vanilla java as opposed to the tons of other stuff that works with it.
