Have you seen how Japanese peole make equipment really tiny? And have you seen old old WW2 guns, spy cameras, etc. disguised as pens & cigarette cases, etc? Well I think that in our future we would have made spy equipment less noticeable than we already have. Accordingly we may never know if a person visits us from our future because nothing would give him away.

And as for "now" not factoring into this... Well - how do we know how time works? What if it doesn't go in a straight line? What if it goes in a spiral shape? And we can only hop from one "leg" of this time spiral to another? So a person with a time machine might not have an ability to hop over to our part of this time spiral, hence couldn't visit us. BUT his machine might allow him to, say, visit Jesus Christ's period... <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Read my other points, I stated time wasn't linear, don't latch on to one point just because you think you have an effective argument against it. My point was no one would go back in time incognito, humanity being the egotistical force that it is would make a spectical out of it and would announce to the people of the past that they arrived. Knowing us we would probably send missionaries back in time to prevent things we deemed historical mistakes.

I think dr.d has a great point. Time travel is only possible in a scenario where time is liniar (events happen in order from A to Z). But if you considder this carefully you would come to realize that it would be impossible to calculate the path a life would take from birth to death in a liniar fassion. There are too many choices to considder. So that leads me to think that instead of "figuring out" what events are going to occur and sorting them into a line, time would instead allow for EVERY even to occur, and what we conssider to be the "passing" of time is in fact our preception of singularities in the big jumble of events.
To make it simple:
If you drop a tennis ball and watch it fall, the tennis ball doesnt exist on its own and fall down, in fact both you and the tennis ball exist in every position, from the time it left your finger tips to the time it hits the ground, and the reason you see the ball move is because your preceeving one frame out of the entire set of events.
to clear it up further:
Any of you gamers that have ever "clipped" through a wall to the border of a map would know this. When you move through that space holding a shotgun, you leave a trail of yourself and the gun across the screen. So even though there is only ONE shotgun, the trails make it look like there are many. Thats time in a nutshell <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Every event that can occur does, we just see one frame at a time.

Ok, I usually don't flame people outright. But spiral time and framed time have got to be some of the least thought out ideas I've heard all week. I'm going to stop reading or posting to this thread now, because it makes my brain hurt to think about how little thought people put into understanding how the world works. It's like listening to myths about the great hollow log that spewed forth the first children of the human race. Complete and utter crap that nobody bothered to think about before writing it down.
So.... In summation, you can flame me back all you want. Because I'm not coming back to this thread. Because I can't stand talking to a brick wall.
Maybe Who should make a mod that thinks out his replies before letting him post, most of us aren't posting about the conceptual idea of time like today and tomorrow. We all know time is an accepted part of the "real world" and that we can measure a day and a month. Next time read what the thread is actually about before flaming for no reason.
And the "I'm not reading replies" thing is just childish, so there ::sticks out his tongue::

On many occasions though: "Hey, i knew this would happen!" or "I've been here already"... It's a common thing...
