<div class="IPBDescription">-_-</div> This forum scares me...do so many of you misspell words so often because you don't know any better, or are you just foreign? I can understand coming from a different country...but man, the people living in UK or US have no excuse for the errors I've seen. I'm not talking about the occasional 1 3 3 7 misspell either, I think we should ban everyone once they exceed 5 spelling errors <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> That way I can be member number 1 instead of 12,xxx or whatever I am (I didn't bother joining until late).

I thought this was appropriate:
Here are some tips to improve your grammar.
1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat)
6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually)
unnecessary.
9. Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
10. No sentence fragments.
11. Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used.
12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary;
it's highly superfluous.
14. One should NEVER generalize.
15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
16. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
17. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
18. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
19. The passive voice is to be ignored.
20. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical
words however should be enclosed in commas.
21. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
22. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
23. Understatement is always the absolute best way to put
forth earth-shaking ideas.
24. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I
hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
25. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times:
Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it
correctly.
26. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
27. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
28. Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
29. Who needs rhetorical questions?
30. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
And the last one...
31. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
Thats too true. But when it is sooo horrible that you cant even understand what they mean then it should be deleted or edited by the mods <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Irregardless means "Without lack of regard"
Kudos to those who understood the reference <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
But as we all know this isn't always true.
6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration
Annoying being a subjective word doesn't apply well to rules dictating grammar.
I'll be keepin em commin as I find em.
Seriously, this is reminding me of the things my English teacher used to say...
or... I mean ... wait
/dies
(the english people here may spot the Monty Python reference in the above sentences)

Oh my god, this is classic, great stuff. I have the sneaking suspicion you copy/pasted it though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Still, at least I didn't find it funny!
Nice stuff there Torak, I might have to lift that. I get pretty frustrated sometimes when reading others' posts containing abominable spelling and gramm<b>a</b>r, but hey ho, such is life <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Their/They're/There is one that people still can't get though, that one winds me up.
For the sake of those who still misuse it:
Their: Belonging to them, owned by them. For example: "I hate that clan [Bubba], their tactics are so low!"
They're: They are. Simple. For example: "I hate that clan [Bubba], they're all big pansies!"
There: At that place/location: For example: "I hate that clan [Bubba], they always camp there!"
If you want to get a little advanced, you can start using these words in the same sentence...
"I hate that clan [Bubba], they're always using their tactic of camping there."
I never knew such things were so difficult until I started reading forums <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I think the point is that many people [mis]use "irregardless" to mean "regardless"...

Than and then gets me going. "Than" is quantitative and "then" is time related:
"I have more posts <i>THAN</i> you"
"I will be home at 3:00, call me <i>THEN</i>"
Favourite misuse of English, from a man impersonating Geaorge W Bush:
"Now why should I be interestificated in that?"
Your: Belong to you, of you. "your Y-fronts are on fire!"
You're: You are. "You're on fire!"
The apostrophe is such an abused little bunny <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

If by reference you mean the irony in how he was telling us not to misuse words because others did while improperly using irregardless, then yes we all got it. However if that's not the case you're going to have to clarify your definition of reference.

No, it's a reference to a certain movie (well, short film).
Unfortunately khazmodan, the fact is that your ability to spell properly, avoid grammatical errors, etc., adds weight to your words. Rather than take it as something that doesn't matter, look at it for what it is. If you can present your ideas/arguments/whatever in a clear and concise manner, it shows you at least have some form of ground to stand on. You may not know what you're talking about, but at least you're evidently intelligent enough to form an arguable opinion. I usually tend to disregard the posts of those who have rampant spelling errors, the kind where its made obvious they actually think they're spelling words correctly, as the authors usually tend to be of a younger age, or just lack the worldly experience to bring anything new to the table.
Also next time try this.
Presenting your arguments in a clear and concise manner with few spelling errors grants more validity to your words.
Hot air is for weather balloons.
Oddly enough, the culprits usually seem to be from "English-speaking" countries...
The only ones I find really irritating are the posters who format the entire post as a giant extended sentence.
The "Enter" key is your friend, use it.
I usually can understand what most people type because i just correct it in my mind as i go along. Though, every once and a while there is a post that cause my brain to shut down because it is so bad. I wouldn't be surprised if my brain seeps out my nose.

Ooh, was that a jab?
In jest. Warrented, but in jest.
Re next post: Well because sometimes a sentence does do where a paragraph falls short.
Actually it was in retort to calling my post off-topic, sort of.
lol, why
Oliver -> Olli -> Ollj
Its short and its already registered NOWERE (apart from the AIM but who the hell uses that crap?) and in NS i most times get called "ojjl" in chat!
If you feel the spelling on here is bad, these muppets would probably make your brain explode.
It is an utterly incomprehensible nightmare world of mobile phone text message-speak and 4 page long flourescent sigs...
