Both are tentatively scheduled for release in the next two months. 1.4 is in beta testing now, and NS is close to that point. As a beta tester of 1.4 and a rabid fan of NS, I can say that NS is surely more interesting. I can say that NS will make it through the release of 1.4 with many more fans than it thought possible. I can say that, without a doubt, NS will survive, and will not fall prey to natural selection of the HL mods. - Greedo386, from RR article on CS. vs. NS

this is true.. but i also play beta 1.4 and therefore am not really active anymore at the forum, but i like ns more... only i lost my cs interest, and did not play any game any more, got really into the ns forum, but i like playing more then talking about playing.. but ns really is cool and tempts me. i cant wait to play it... isnt there a way the beta now can be released using steam
just kidding... i really think ns could beat cs later on, because ns is more lamerproof, and very more original.. people get sick of the 'you cheat, no you' things and the laming... they want something new.. even if ns is released at the same time ns is, im going to kick cs and play ONLY ns, but for now i have to settle with CS... :

Yeah, thats the reason I don't play CS ,because of the people and attitudes there.I just hope that the same thing doesnt happen to NS.CS was a fun game originally...

I dont think it will, all the ### holes will be to l33t to switch games. I think after they totaly embaress themselves by ranting about how the aliens have wallhacking and findout there supposed to, they will pack up there l33tness and go back to CS.

I wont make a comment on which I like more, since I have not actually played NS yet ...

however, I am looking forward to NS then I am to CS 1.4 (and yes, I'm a "beta tester" as well).

    I haven't played CS since 1.1.

Although I do believe that NS shouldn't be published during the occasional 14 days server-blackout around the newest CS-release, I don't think that CS could be a real 'danger' for NS and vice versa - McDonalds may be bigger, but it can't seriously harm a five-star hotel.

I never really liked cs in the first place, The first server I played on had 5 people using OGC. Besides going from a TFC ratio of 8-1 to a 1-2 because of some d3wd 0GCing and openly addmitting it and not getting banned on the spot isnt what I called fun. I think CS would probably be alot better if there wasnt an avrage of 2 cheaters on every server :/.

Cs might have a bigger comunity (for now), but ns isn't released yet, i don't think cs had such a tight and "big" community when they were beta testing their beta 1.0, NS just tops cs in 'bout everything, maybe if they release NS the same time as cs 1.4 people will be playing cs and not NS, but i don't think it's gonna be that way, first off i like cs, i'm in a clan and everything, but it's getting boring, while NS is refreshing, new, creative, unseen before. Besides don't know why people are making such a fuz 'bout cs 1.4, from what i read it's gonna suck bigtime and besides it's just a new version... Oh well i say NS doesn't have to be released the same time as 1.4, it think it's still 2 early to release it,it's better they betatest some more, the mod can only improve by it but if they did i know what i'm gonna be playing : it's gonna be NS and not cs!

Beta 1.4? So what? All your mods are belong to Bob!

For the most part, I usually don't play multiplayer games for reasons mentioned eariler (if I wish to game and socialize, I'll rather play a table-top, Shadowrun if I want to play with guns). However, somehow I caught Flayritus and look forward to the mod.

A possibly better anaology between CS and NS is Magic and Legend of the Five Rings. Magic is definatly bigger and more people know about it. However it's full of dimwits and there isn't a story or real community. Legend of the Five Rings is lesser known but loved by nearly all who play play it. It defeats Magic in almost all catorgorys. It has a real story going for it (players discuss story far more than mechcaics). The community is tight yet accepting and I've yet to met a lamer L5R player. By the way, it is the game I get my name from.

    All hail the Crab!

I guess I should weigh in here. While I didn't mention cheaters in my article, that's always been one of the biggest problems with CS. I've played on servers where people would no clip their way into the easter egg rooms, where people would admit to having god mode on, where over-zealous admins would impose their rules. It basically stopped being a fun game, and started to become an exercise in futility. And I think that people simply just need a break from the realism mods. It's been too long since they've been able to play something as original as NS.

And btw, Fragmaster, Ugly Cat pwnz j0000!

You know, I used to love cs, back in the initial release (I wasn't hip enough to play beta) but I played today for the first time in a long time, due to hectic scheduling, and I f-ing LOATHE the game now. The firing model seems arbitrary, at best, and I've never seen such blatant cheating . . headshots are one thing, but we were playing assault (me as a ct), and this awp(m) ##### (who was 43-2, btw) headshot me ten seconds into the match, THROUGH the corrugated metal boxes stacked by the buildings. AND NOBODY BATTED AN EYE. F cs. It's lost its charm. *edit* And its integrity.

    Hear, hear!

CS was great from beta 1-6 ... lots of great things were added, and not just weapons. improved player models and animations, some killer maps, new game modes, etc. after 6.5 (the introduction of the new (random-as-f***) netcode and 'user-friendly' GUI), things started going down hill, picked up a little with 1.0, and then cheats and lack of fresh content killed it, for me anyways.

Well this is my first post, I read Pc Gamer for the month of February and seen this little article "Killing Box" where it talks about the third annual Half-Life Mod Expo. I see details on all of these different mods, most of which I don't care for . Then I read about the "Mod of the show" and I get hooked just from the little snipit about Natural Selection. Ok, enough (_v_) kissing, I mostly play Cs but I am really looking forward to NS, a lot. So just saying hello to all the fellow posters here.

CS 1.4 a danger? Well I don't think so. CS is always the same thing : you start, buy a gun, bang abng bang, end of the round, start, buy a gun......... . It's boring.

NS seem to have muck more varieties of gameplay.
CS is on its final phase!

i doubt tht CS is going downhill, most of the people that buy half-life buys it cause of CS, know i did...

then, i discovered all the cool mods =)

why must everything come down to what is better? Personally, Ill be playing both cs and ns. When I want to owns some sorry ### camp/awpers with a scout I'll play cs, but when I want to put down cover fire for the marines movin in to rape the hive Ill play ns. CS is full of lamers though, you just have to find the good servers where the admins are active. Hopefully NS never gets so full of cheaters... My conclusion is that since NS and CS are both high quality games they will both own the halflife community equaly. Trane

Well, CS is a good game, indeed. NS -will- be better, but I suppose if you wish, you may doubt (Bob may eat you). It's only that there are so many people that flip out when you kill them in CS, and then they get all their annoying awping buddies to barrage you with insults. Besides having better gameplay, I predict NS will be a different group of people playing, and because it's not just buy, kill, round like CS, there won't be the same tension among components = less l4m34z.
Am I allowed to say the ***edited out*** word?

(That answer your question? Don' worry, good of you to ask.)

Well at LANs I noticed CS is losing it’s popularity at each LAN I go to and last night it seams only the vocal ones interested in playing it
Brood wars starting to be played more oddly enough
Ghost Recon bit of play and as well with q3 and UT

I am hoping to play NS soon

I just hope tha playing NS will be less frustrating then trying to find a good Sven server, or a good Sven map for that matter. Telekilled? BAH!

As good as NS is going to be, I don't believe it's going to take the place of any mod I play. I'll just have to make more time to add this to my schedule. I still am an avid TFC fan, and always will be. I'm one of the 238 people on the planet that haven't lost -all- faith in TF2. :|

I don't think it's very logical to drawn parallels between the release of CS 1.4 and the release of NS, in terms of one game "killing" another. If you compare and contrast the two games you will find that the only similarities they really share are the base level definitions of what the individual games are all about. 3D action team based multiplayer shooters. From there, both games spread in very different directions as each has a specifically defined target audience that will appeal to each game respectively. Just like any other multiplayer game floating around in cyber space you have the "fanatics", the "now and agains", and the "once or twicers." I can assure you, based upon the quality design and development I've seen so far, that NS will be no different.

I'm sure there are a million sci-fi fans that prefer futuristic human VS. alien combat over modern counter terrorism combat. The popularity of these forums can easily show this to be evident. Hell, I'm a hardcore sci-fi fan myself and I personally can't wait to dump CS for NS. The main reason I'm dumping CS is that you only truly experience a game to its fullest when there is an unsaturated and dedicated user base who go into each game with the full intent of playing by the rules and taking squad based combat seriously. Once you go commercial like CS did, you bring in an entirely new wave of people who proceed into each game with their own idea of how they want to play and how they think the game should be played, among other things. The semi-solution to this saturation is clans, but that type of organization still faces the same problems, just to a lesser degree. So, in sum I hope to have that dedicated communal experience with NS that most mods experience in their infant stages before they grow too big.

I was personally let down twice by Aliens vs. Predator's multiplayer gaming experience, and after reading about NS in the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine I can't wait to jump into a game of NS to see whether or not if fulfills the Sci-Fi gaming experience I'm looking for.
