(intended for LMG)
Since MCN00B's never got a release and I fancied making a gun model, here's what I have so far. All it needs are the scope and the stock, and a couple of little details and fixes. Then I can get on to animating and skinning. It currently clocks in at just over 1000 polies, but I have some optimising I can do, so final polycount should be similar. good stuff, how long has it taken you so far?
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
Hmm, about 5 hours ish, maybe. I don't get much time to model at the moment because I'm ultra busy with other things, so it's been nice to have a chance to play around for a while. However, that means that animating and skinning could take me a while, especially since I'm not on my usual computer at the moment, and it doesn't have a 3D card so I'm unable to test things in-game.

Any volunteers willing to skin or animate would be most welcome, of course.

Hmm, maybe you're right. I'll have to narrow it a bit.

Overall, very good work. But like BP said, your proportions might be a bit off.

It's wide.

The main part of the gun is probably too high, which makes the barrel look thin. The front of the pump should be right up against the barrel.

And it might be a bit stretched along its length, like the handle looks too wide.

I'm comparing perspective shots to the reference, so maybe this is all just an illusion to me.

Oh, I also noticed some oddity in your top picture there, right at the top of the gun you've got a missing face or something.

Take a look at McN00bs model, His is properly proportioned.
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
Well, I'm working with the reference in the background so side-on its proportions are pretty much exact - poor proportioning must be illusory. The oddity in the top pic you referred to is one of the things I need to finish - the front of that top section needs to be rounded off.

I was JUST about to say that. It does look a bit out of proportion, but if it's all illusionary, then that's all it is. Very nice aside from that.

I think it looks too wide cause you made it in proportion with the forgrip, which is a perfect cylinder, unlike regular guns that usually have it not too much wider that the actual barrel. Dunno if it is supposed to be that way or not.

Updated pic. Patrially optimised, its polycount stands at 1050. I'm not sure whether to add the scope or not as that will probably push me over my target of 1000 after optimisation.

Purdeh sweet...what's this gonna be for? GL I hope...doesn't look like much of a machine gun.

Given the way the Ghost's canister rifle worked in Starcraft - slow fire rate, pretty good range, high damage - I'd almost say it should be a pistol replacement.

to big for a pistol IMO, how bout a shotty?
• Pvt_HudsonPvt_Hudson Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2019Members
i would also like to use it as a shotty. Besides, the shotgun fire sound in mercatorn's starcraft soundpack is the ghost's c10/ 20 rifle's sound.

Therefore, i will use it as a shotty no matter what

Well, I'll be making it up to be a LMG. People might grumble at me about that not being realistic, or something, but really I don't care. No comm ever buys me a shotty, no matter how proficient I am with one, so I'd never get to see it in-game.

However, I gather from what I've read about the weapon that it's more of a shotty kind of a thing in the game, so if anyone wants to remake it after release to fit the shotty's anims they're perfectly welcome to.

Oh, and I'm having difficulty deciding on a colour scheme for it. I was figuring it would mostly be a gunmetal colour, but with coloured panels. I have no idea what colour(s) to choose though. Any good suggestions any of you may have would be handy.
• VashVash Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8333Members
Silver-metal looking would probably be the most correct looking color...

But I think a black metal effect would look all evil and badass.

Maybe -just for effect- you can kinda add a laser and a little beam of light coming out like on Quake 3 -if- it is possible. I don't know much about modelling so i'm not sure what can be done for the HL engine, but i'm pretty sure adding a red line to a model of a gun to add for a laser effect is possible.
• CrisqoCrisqo Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11625Members
I'm pretty sure the red "laser" would clip through stuff, so I don't think that would work.

A tiny, tiny update: I bent the barrel :o

Don't know what went wrong when I was compiling this quick test model. I think I have everything done now though, apart from sorting out the smoothing groups properly, so it's time to move on to animating and skinning the bugger.

It's optimised at 800 polygons (without hands) which is way under my target, so I think I'll add the scope after all.

I actually want to try coloring that. Even though I only have MS Paint, it gives me some more experience on modeling.
