Last Stand...

who else likes to do this?
Am I the only ones that love to see how long we can hold up? THis is on NS_nancy, what you see is the blockade, and behind we have a modest stand up with Siege (agaisnt gorge building). And of course lots of ip.

All in all it was a cool game!

that's not a last stand, that's just plain ol' sick!
[edit] I bet I should give a reason: building stacking. [/edit]

That's because you don't see what behind those ! (a lot of evil littel aliens). ANd also, think of those as hum... a sealed door with lots of thing. An intelligent comm would have spend thoose res in Grenade launchers ... later in HA and upgrades to rush a hive with no chance for aliens.
When you survive till the half team has HA+GL+welder you have won. (if suddenly not every marine goes on a suicide rambo mission for no reason).

Yes yes.. I know. I was the comm. I COULD have putted those resources in a better way, but my team said it was ok. (Well they did not complain and had fun). The goal was to put us in a stranded situation and see how long we could survive. we lost, sure, but we had fun surviving wave after wave of onoses and lerks, and skulks, and gorges (babblers)

Edit :

I'm dont remember correctly, but was the NSteam planning of putting a stranded gameplay in? I heard that Marine vs marien and alienvs alien might come in, but stranded is pretty cool! If you ever played aliens online, on that old website that had Silent Death and lots of other nice games to play online.

I actually do really enjoy the last stand style of gameplay as marines...you feel even more part of a team when you're all going down firing together.

A commander dropped a CC in front of me in a vent as I was going to a last attempt IP they dropped. Funnily enough, if you stand close enough to the CC's, bile bomb fires through (and caused me no self damage), and marines can't fire back. That comm just bought me a shield

It'd be a good 'alternate' game mode.

Standard map, game starts as normal, but Marines only get 3 respawns each. Once marines all dead, game restarts with teams reversed, other team has to last longer.

I know it's been done before, but it wouldn't take much to implement, and would make a pretty sick change.

I love the last stand off! But I hate people who winge that you should just hurry up and die. One of the most fun things about NS is at the end when your hunting down the last little "safe-base" or trying to build and survive in a "safe-base". I love playing as the kharaa while the team hunts down a marine with a jet pack who's cleverly conceled themself. Or camping in a vent with your buddies being healed with def chambers or regen while you try to get a last kill and survive. I get goosebumps as I sit and watch an enemy walk past me while I try and hide or seeing the yellow circle breifly appear when your hunting down the last marines.

Damn you people who complain

Here's what I find to be interesting about most last stands, it is "almost never" by a resource node, because they are such hot spots of activity. This just means that if one side or the other has done everything in their power to win but just keep getting repelled, they get only one chance to drop a new command chair, if even that. Even last ditch stands need to be planned in advance to last for any amount of time.

That said, I love last stands. I crave the experience of "it ain't over till..."

I complain.

CCs should not be used as walls, it's counter-intuitive. I'd like to see a maximum of 2 placed CCs in 1.1

No, a better choice would be a maximum of one per area, with the initial spawn one not counting (so you could place a reserve in spawn)

i like the idea of hunting the last player down in a vent, but i dont like the wall of ccs, it just seems lame to me as it takes such a long time to destroy them, by the time one it down, the commander has enough res to place it again.

i think that the building system of the age of empires series should be intorduced, where, the "building" when it is first placed has (in aoe) 1 hp and can be destroyed instantly, with its hp gradually increasing to full when it is completely operational. i realise that 1hp is very low, so maybe 10% of the health of the full structure.
i can see this helping in two ways 1 - it encourages marines to build the srtuctures faster so they dont get eaten by aliens, and 2 - it discourages the wall of ccs as the aliens will be able to destroy them very easily.

also, this may be not really in the right topic but it is related i noticed that even if you attack an unbuilt structure, when it is built, it has full health, meaning you have to start all over again destroying it.
i excpect the dev team know about this, and im pretty certain if it was a bug it would have been fixed by now...but is this issue going to be addresed in 1.1 or is this a game feature that will never be changed?

Unbuilt buildings, IIRC, have half-health. With a CC, that's still a hefty number.

You won't see marine building stacking in 1.1. I'd be surprised if you see CC walls.

yay! I hate it when comms spam chairs in a hive or in hallways.

on the other hand, I think that a "blockade" setting for a game _is_ fun...but would prefer if the marines/aliens had some kind of structure that served this purpose...a placable wall that would be weaker than a stack of comm chairs, or a map designed with this in mind (although the only device of this sort I have seen so far, a lockable door that cannot be circumvented by any means from outside the room, is uberlame).

Why not make it so that you cannot place a CC within the area around a CC (green circle). This way it won't limit additional bases but will stop Lame Commanders from building walls with them.

I have one thing to say about that pic....

FIGHT on my brother!

Although wall of lame is the proper term for this, the fact of the matter is this is a strategy of denial. Just like an alien wall of lame, it is not undefeatable, but it is intended to deny the enemies access to a location for a short amount of time. Sure it is delaying the inevitable, but what are you supposed to do, press F4? Have any of you seen the movie Aliens, or realized this is (or was) a STRATEGY game where you are supposed to do things like this (like being creative rather then hyper-efficient and predictable). Sure the CCs are not exactly thematic, but it is more like role-playing the scenario then you would think. If you where to build a barricade, you would use whatever would work and is available. The fact of the matter is CCs are the only thing that fit that description.

And you may also say that this is bad because it frustrates the enemy team, then how frstrating do you think being a hair widths from death is? How many of you have read The Art of War? This isn't some card game with specific rules other then no cheating; This is a FPS/Strategy game!

Now I may be a dinosaur by not going the way of CS where NS is supposed be played a certain way to favor those with the skills and scripts to win, and where creative, unorthodox, resourceful, ingenious, inventive and unusual tactics are shunned because they don't emphasis personal playing skill and reaction time, or are not mainstream. If it is not the popular efficient tactic or approach it is taboo, and frowned upon because it works and is inconvenient for the mainstream one thought player.

I don't like the "alamo" defence very much, once the outcome of the game is inevitable. I have seen a couple of remarkable comebacks, though, so I will play through to the end. One of the recurring problems on pub servers is fellows F4ing too early. If its 8 on 8, and 2 guys F4 as soon as a fade shows up to make it 8 on 6, the marines are pretty much boinked.

I do not F4 unless the winning team appears to be deliberately prolonging the game. For example, marines ringing the last hive with HA/HMGers, but not killing the hive - only killing aliens as they spawn; or onos standing at an IP killing marines as they spawn, but not destroying the IP. When it gets to that point, I jag in.
• Infected_MarineInfected_Marine Join Date: 2002-12-21 Member: 11287Members
Then you can call me brother Vimstl.

I admit the prolonging simply to prolong isn't perfectly honorable, but I fight to survive, and when I say fight I mean fight. The only problem I have (and it is a reallly minor one at that) is prolonging the game as a marine when the CC and IP's are gone. If there is no respawning, then you should try and take out as many of those SOB's as possible.
• p4Prosperop4Prospero Join Date: 2002-12-04 Member: 10454Members, Constellation
The only prolonging I find annoying is when a team prolongs death. I don't care if you don't get to play with your big toys. If you have your foot on our necks, step on us and finish it. Don't eat everything but one IP. Don't tech up to HMGs and level 3 weapons when a big LMG rush will do. It's not polite to play with your food.

Personally, if there are no functional or unbuilt IPs and CCs whatsoever, I'll rush the enemy and hope to waste someone before I die. I don't feel the need to prolong the game any further than is necessary. Start a new game and try to do better.

Spectating it, on the other hand, is quite entertaining.

Uhm.. some specification : we were playing for fun and did not try to win the usual way. We wanted to see how long we could survive. We had 3 RT outside the aliens accepted not to kill in X time, and during that time we builded our last stand. It was 3 AM, we were 4 vs 4. We gave the alien time to buid their 3 hives while we builded this.
