Ns Server V1.04 With Adminmod On Redhat 7.3 And 8.

Known problems...
Hi All,

Flayra has released v1.04 of the server.

We are aware of one particular issue that we have not solved in this version.

Using Adminmod on a RedHat Linux server 7.3 or 8.0 (possibly Mandrake 9.0 as well - unconfirmed) is broken and will cause the server to crash as soon as a player joins.

It's not 100% clear why this is happening (we suspect that it's to do with incompatibilities with the standard c++ libraries released on RH) and we have been working around the clock to narrow it down.

Suffice it to say, we realise that Adminmod is an important admin tool and we will continue to work to resolve the issue so that those of you using this particular setup can run your servers as you like them.

For the moment however, it is not possible to run Adminmod on RH 7.3 or 8.0 servers. You will either have to run without, or use an alternative such as ClanMod or AMX/MetaSmall

Please bear with us if you have this problem, we will fix it as soon as possible.

Regards

joev.

Hang in there guys, I know it's been kind of painful running an NS server under linux, but the performance and compatibility are getting better and we won't give up. Thanks.

What kind of CPU improvements did you see for Linux?
• HtNickoliHtNickoli Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9786Members
I had to drop AdminMod, but more then fair trade for added optimizations. Good Job Flayra.

Was 16 player. full at map start 75-80% cpu useage

Now at 18 player. Full at map start 50-60% cpu usage.

I run RH7.3 on my server and adminmod works fine, I compiled my Adminmod binaries local to my machine with the RH7.3 libraries.

I'm attaching my adminmod/dlls folder...

Hope these help some people out, just copy these files to you adminmod/dlls folder and give it a try.

Can't attach, so I'm just going to link: http://www.darkdream.org/am-dlls.tar.gz

great! I was going to do this as a fix tomorrow.

But we'll figure out a more final solution to this anyway.

For now.. it works, use it

I tested this and it works. All you need to do is backup your existing AdminMod files and replace them with the ones in the zip above. I'm running RedHat 7.3 with AdminMod and Ns-104 and it seems stable. Thanks very much DrGiggles.

Please note: afaik (i.e. I've been told) that DLL is 2.50.50.

I has a known vulnerability... if some nice soul would compile 2.50.51 (the fix) then that would be better to use.

I noticed a big difference in pings on maps like hera (the first map I ran after updating. Full server pings stayed under 200 well into the game (where as before they used to spike to 400-600 on my crappy server).

I gotta say I'm very disappointed, we waited 2 months and have absolutely zero improvement in Linux CPU usage. I had plans of launching a 32 player server next week with 1.04 out but thats out of the question without any improvement.

As of the new patch , My Redhat 8.0 server has had pings double. I've disabled adminmod and that didnt make a difference , I am running no addons. Before the patch , even at 17 players on Hera the pings were usually never over 100 , even when the map dragged out for an hour and a half. Now , even on Tanith or caged , at start of map with 15 players on pings are in the 200 range. I don't know what the deal is , or how to fix it. If anyone else has this problem and discovers a fix , please tell me.

RedHat 7.3 Athlon 1900+ with 256MB DDR RAM 12 player server running AdminMod. On ns_hera with a full server CPU usage would be 80-90%, with the new 1.04 patch I show around 60% CPU usage. That's the improvement I see. ns_eclipse now runs around 25% vs the previous 45-50%, ns_tanith runs about 50-60%
• BrutusBrutus Join Date: 2002-10-20 Member: 1555Members
I'm running an 18 player server on a P4 2ghz with 1gb of ram and I get CPU usage of 86% after 30 minutes on ns_nothing. Pings stayed under 100 though. Most players were at 75 or below.

I must say, I'm surprised to hear this.

Since most people seem to be seeing improvements in CPU performance, you are in the minority.

If, instead of just coming on here and insulting the hard working people who spend long days (and nights) working on this mod (for free), you actually gave us some data we may be able to help figure out why you're not seeing any meaningful improvements.

If you could post
CPU/RAM/HDD configuration
Linux Distribution
Version of libc and libstdc++
Any other bits you have installed (like metamod etc)

Then we can have a look and see if we can figure out why you're not getting any performance boost.

Also, I suggest, if you haven't tried it already, a clean install of HLDS and a clean install of NS server followed by the 1.04 patch. See what happens then.

Notice no one else is using ping as a standard for SERVER performance. CPU usage is what you should be looking at. I'll highlight the main points.

Things that affect ping:
o Time of day
o Server Speed
o Server Connection Speed and Bandwidth
o Client Connection Speed and Bandwidth
o Weather (for those on analog modems)
o Client Rate Settings
o Client Computer (if the client's computer is slow)
o and much much more...

Things that affect CPU usage:
o Server OS
o Server CPU
o Server RAM
Am I Missing Something? I could be, but it's probably minor.

Keep as many variables out of it as you can...especially clients when you're talking about the server.

THEREFORE, what you need to do is give the following information:
o Server OS
o Server CPU
o Server RAM
o CPU Usage

there has been alot of trouble with the DNS servers lately. along with some backbone connectivity problems.

don't look at pings...look at CPU usage.

I'm noticing a trend, everyone with Linux other than Redhat 7.3/8.0 is loving the new upgrades, everyone with it, says nothing has changed. Maybe what we need is a new build of the game for 7.3/8.0? If that's possable I think it would make alot of people happy.

You must tell us your secret. Of course there use to be some guy here that said the was 0-1% with 20 players on NS hera too.
• VadakillVadakill The Almighty BSO Join Date: 2002-04-02 Member: 373Members, NS1 Playtester
Keep in mind I'm running a 12 player server not an 18 player server like yours Brutus. As you know, CPU usage goes up exponentially with each player added. This is probably our difference right there. I said ns_hera was running at 60% with 12 players, I could see how it would be higher with 18 Players.

I'll have to find out what the CPU usage is on ns_nothing so we can compare notes. When I find that out I'll edit this post and append it to the end.

Not true.

RH8.0
Dual AMD 2100+ cpus
1 gig DDR reg

1.03 server
---------------
maxplayers of 17 (16 open 1 reserved slot)
Constant 75-85% cpu0 useage.
With spikes to 93% after long rounds on hera, bast etc.

1.04 server
---------------
Maxplayers 18 (16 open, hltv, 1 reserved slot)
50-65% cpu0 useage.
With spikes to 75% after long rounds on hera, bast etc.

I've found that the patch helps with your current level of players. Adding 2 or more working player slots will just bring you back to the same useage you had with 1.03. So the patch will not allow you to really increase your maxplayers. 18 slots on a 2 gig is the max I can seem to run. With 20, hera etc (non stripped verion) Gives pings in the 200+ range.
