I have 2 machines, server is the firewall/HLDS server/gateway for my other machine. I therefore connect to HLDS on my gaming rig through the local LAN - as Vadakill stated using the 192.168.0.1 local IP for the server.
I have tried to connect through the outside IP: <Shameless plug>163.1.180.217:27016</Shameless plug>, and it defaults to the local one anyway - after all I've got to go through the gateway and everything is LANNED anyway.

My suggestion would be do an upgrade and use the old bits for your server machine (that's what I did), or just buy the bits you'd use for a server (ie decent processor, board and RAM and HDD, Ch34p GFX, no sound etc), and stick your machine behind that one on the LAN.
This setup works wonderfully for me, I'm always pinging <30 on my server at full load and always <10 at half load, independent of map, and very rarely do other people have lag problems (but then I'm on 100Mb LAN), and I only have an athlon 1.4/512MB "DDR2100" with a g4yg4ybyte mobo in there.

As for your centersay request: if you set pretty_say to 0, you'll get admin_csay to give you normal text in the centre of the screen, otherwise with pretty_say on 1 it'll do it as a tip (down the right). so far that's all I've found out about that! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
