I believe that freeware installer link I posted is capable of having a 'clone and rename' feature.. kind of like, if your installer installs new skins, it will rename all existing skins with the same name to name.old or something. Makes it easy for the new players who start whining about player consistency checks and stuff to go back and know everything is there.

Lol.. I just went and did the stupidest thing. I wrote this little program, screenshottie below. I just tested it, works great (a moron could write it, so if it didn't I'd have to shoot myself).

It ignores text files and config files and stuff, so you don't need to worry about backing that up. Just backs up the actual media files.

The ftp still isnt working for me, at first I tried flashget, then mozilla's built in download manager, then cuteftp, and then as a last resort I tried IE, and I still cant get the damn thing! I'm getting the error "500 'P@SW': command not understood" when the command "PASV" is sent, I really want those skins! Any help at all would be appreciated.
Edit: w00t! I'm finally downloading the file, just to let you know, OFN, cuteftp, download accellerator and pretty much every other download manager will NOT work with your ftp.

Ok. For all you people who keep complaining about the installer/skin, dont download it then. But for the love of god, dont yell at the guy for making something he thought others would enjoy. If you dont like the installer, dont download it, you dont like the skin, dont download it, but dont go ranting on about how sh!tty it is. I, to be honest, like his installer, cuz I hate unzipping **** and putting it here and there, and his reskin is freakin amazing. It looks WAY more detailed and 3d. So if you dont like it, just leave this thread alone.

Wouldn't it be great if the devs allowed certain custom skins, deemed not to give an advantage to any side, even with consistency on?
OFM, sorry if I gave the wrong impression of the skins with the HLMV pic. Great work, I wish I could actually use it but alas, I'm a clanner.

just think how many models would have to be reviewed. There may be only a few now but they'll build up over time

Reviewing models would not be necessary. Im going to use a very scary word sequence:
Fractal regression statistical hierarchy templates.

Properly implemented, the server could look at a custom model, and determine if it unfair or not. Kind of like a baysian filter for halflife models. Maybe I should write one

It is currently used for such things as determining the identity of a person from a side-shot of his face, when all a computer has is frontal shots of people's faces. Or for taking a 2D picture and converting it to a fully-skinned 3d model automatedly. Or, if worked in reverse, you give it 5 examples of 'accepted' NS models, the statistical hierarchy tree would then be developed enough that you could then fire any model at it, and it would beable to determine with nearly 100% accuracy if the model is acceptable. Very very complex mathematical algorythyms, that's typically what its never used by regular programmers. Only really expensive programs usually have such technology Be darned if that was even taught in university.

But I could write one... *cough cough*

Maybe just have it check something such as simple as lighting? With the regular NS marine as a max limit, anything below that level of lighting is ok? Perhaps it deserves its own thread on the suggestion forum?
