Should the bends or nitrogen be a gameplay mechanic?

I would rather nitrogen be selectable when creating a save, such as I select "Survival" then "Nitrogen" is checked off.

Isn't that a command that used to be in-game, that you would take damage if you ascended more than a couple 100 meters at a time, but you would get more oxygen?

I have yet to use it, but I do think it should be used to spice up the hardcore playstyle or at least an option.
