I wish I could get into a good private server or two myself. Some of the people you get on public servers, jeez...

How long have you been playing games online? I am not asking that to be mean or anything its just that I have been online gaming since the days of Quake and I have heard the term "pub" to describe a public server for about the same amount of time. Frankly I am quite surprised that you havent heard it before. I mean..... it is used pretty much everywhere in the online gaming world.

"pub" is common useage in north america TFC community for a public server. It is almost never used in euro TFC. Not sure about other mods tho.

Pub is where i forget my worries (hint, not videogames).
Although i guessed correctly when i heard it refer to public servers. I think the problem here is the ratio of young gamers to gamers that are the age of majority. I recall drinking cutting into my gaming time back in the day, then i set up Bond-shots. Get 4-6 people together and play goldeneye (n64) multiplayer. Winner (and second place if you have a lot of people) does a shot, loser(s) get replaced if more than 4 people. So the guy whos better than everyone else gets drunk and starts to lose, and everyone else starts to win. This also worked well for Mario Party as the ladies prefered that to Bond.... whoops, thats enough off topic for now.

    Main Entry: pub
    Pronunciation: 'p&b
    Function: noun
    Date: circa 1859
1 chiefly British : PUBLIC HOUSE

A "public server" is basically like a "public house", being open to the public.

I was about to post a reply to say that the etymology of the term "pub" is actually quite interesting, but apparently someone has beaten me to it.

Look up the term in relation to open-air plays in times slightly earlier than Shakespearean theatre (when plays got a better reputation due to his support from the royal family, and were thus given a more modern theatre setting). It's actually pretty interesting stuff.

thats so bizarre that you never heard of the term "pub"

I picked up the term from {BR}Rousdower (of WFA fame)
    and [NBR]tekpede, of CS/NS fame
