Helmet Lazers, Like In The Trailer Movie.

I saw them working, since when?
Hey, I joined a server last night and to my suprise the little red lazers on the Marines Helmets were working. This was a really cool effect, and made it scary to be an alien. I would walk in to a room and bam, little red lazers pointing right at me, "I know I'm spotted, I'm so dead" raced through my head as I dodged gunfire for a moment before getting fraged.

So when did this start? (What version?)

How do you turn it on (it appeard that each marine could toggle the lazer)?

Has anyone else seen this?

I'll try to find that server again and take screen shots if necessary.

Thx,
Backslider

I can see it as almost a balancing feature. The lasers give away the marines, as you could see the lasers before you see the marines. This gives aliens a bit of an advantage in stealth in the early game, and after a lot of playing, I would say the aliens could use a few *MINOR* balance tweaks in their favor to help make it even.

This could be one unusual way to help them out.

    Well, I do know this.

The lazers didn't appear until mid game. (ie. Some upgrade may be triggering the lazers)
The lazers were not on all Marines. (I assume that they were turning them off, with some kind of toggle, or they didn't have the same upgrade/weapon/whatever causes the lazer to appear)
When attacking the Marines, I could see one lazer hit me, then the rest of them would start pointing at me. It was scary looking from an Alien POV. I belive the lazers may have helped the Marines, because when I would sneak into a room and a Marine would see me and fire the rest of his pals knew where he was looking and shoot there too.

The FX were amazing, the beams look real "Lazer'ish", ummm yeah whatever you want to call it. And the beam had a "hotspot" or "brightspot" at the end where it touched an object/wall. Much better than the mine lazer looks. (see Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force "BORG" enemy < thats how it looks)

Sweet FX, made nice ambiance, didn't effect game play at all. Two Big thumbs up for keeping this effect in the game.

BUT WHAT VERSION WAS I PLAYING???
The server did't have it posted, and nobody else knew what it was either.

You were probably playing on a server that had an Adminmod plugin (or similar) installed to allow lasers.
  • SlashmanSlashman Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1815Members
That server has an admim mod patch that does the lazer thingy. I have seen it too. When you connect, it says it is running helmet lazer, or some such thing in the console. No clue what the name of it is, but it is an admin mod thingy.

I liked it, can someone from the NS team comment please. This was very cool.

The helmet laser adminmod plugin has existed for a while now. I saw a POTD on Planet Half-Life that had a 1337 4r4b player with a helmet laser shooting out of his right temple. Obviously, the plugin is a bit out of place in CS (why else would it get POTD?), but might be kinda cool in NS. I'll look into getting it for my server.

EDIT: This thread shouldn't be in this board.

Tho it worx 2 ways one marines can be more accurate but it does give them away UNLESS they can toggle it and use it in the rite way like at long range

    Minor point, but:

    /rant on

"Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" = L.A.S.E.R.

    It is *NOT* LAZER.

    /rant off

Sorry, I was thinking [Dr. Evil Voice] "Lazer" [Dr. Evil Voice] cause thats how it sounds, but ur right Laser is correct. Thanks for the English lesson today teacher, I'll be back tomorrow for the test.

And yes, this should be posted in another forum, like maybe the IDEAS forum. Well I posted it in the IDEAS forum and it was deleted. Busy admins I guess are to blame for that one.

I like the sound of laSer's The first time I watched the trailer I thought Whoa.

If you could toggle them it would be even better!

I think it's useless! The laser gives away your position! You are already a big spot on the map when you have been parasite. Now you don't have to be parasite to let them know where you are.

    It should be toggle somehow.

    Lanvancouver have this thingy.

Yes, it's a third-party addon. Now, I think they look very cool and would help the ambience, but it's really too useful for the aliens if they can see marines' lasers. And if the lasers are toggle-able, then they must give some sort of benefit to be worth turning on, which will change the game in some subtle way.

If you wanted JUST the laser effect, with minimal gameplay changes, I would suggest that lasers be only visible to fellow marines, but be always on with no accuracy changes.

More discussion on the 'feeling' of the marines (and mention of lasers) in the Ideas forum here.

/me sees Lerk, um, lurking in shadows. /me looks at allies. Allies do not see said Lerk. /me aims at Lerk at fires a couple of rounds, turing laser sight on. Allies look at laser sight, see exactly where I am aiming, and turn said Lerk into attractive wall decor.

Except the flashlight makes you glow very brightly. In that case, Lerk sees /me and all my allies, flies away very quickly and before you know it, we are Fade Foodstuffs.

Yes, I've seen it also (but the lasers were on the guns, not helmets). It looks cool for a few minutes until you realise how much it gives your position away. Any skulk sitting above a door can look down at the approaching lasers and think "Aha, three marines heading this way, best hide myself" or "Ah, only one lone marine. Ready for a quick snack." By watching how the angle of the beam changes you even estimate how far away the marine is.

The only way to avoid this is for the marine to be conscious of where he's pointing his gun at all times, like keeping on the wall or floor before you enter a new room so that any alien in there won't see you.

The lasers don't add anything to your ability as a marine, but detract from your chances as they give more information to the aliens.

Perhaps it could be balanced by having a big neon sign attached to each alien saying "I'm over here! Shoot me!"

You've got a flashlight. Flick it on and off a few times and your mates figure out something is up. Combined with you firing into the darkness, they'll probably pay attention after that.

I think the laser would be an interesting addition if it could only be seen by the marine team, or if it added some kind of accuracy bonus, perhaps reducing the spread cone of a weapon. For GL shots, the laser could be a fusing device, setting the grenade to detonate at that range.

I have lasers on my server (through gun) and there is no way to turn it "off", but you can turn it off so you can't see other lasers, but they'll still see yours. commands: hidebeams, showbeams.

    servers: ns1.joe.to, ns2.joe.to, ns3.joe.to

It was placed there to balance out the game by helping the aliens. Unfortunately when running a 24 player server, aliens become easy prey for a team with a good commander and a few decent marines. It helps the aliens, by allowing them to dodge fire easier.

Personally, I think it helps out alot. It helps out aliens without comprimising marines enough to make them lose all the time.

What plugin(s) did you use to make the laser sights? I have the plugin_lasersight_mm.dll metamod plugin but it doesn't seem to work.

4)Follow the link to the metamod laersight plugin website
5)Download and try to get it to work

If you can get it to work, please tell me how

How do i install admin-mod and meta-mod so my NS games run it?

Do you run a server or not? If you don't have a server of your own, you don't need metamod or adminmod - they are server-side only. If you run a server, well, you ought to know. Check out www.adminmod.org for a very detailed installation help file.

Well, I am making a movie so I was wondering if you can have the laser-plugin without the admin/meta mods. Also, what veresion of Admin-mod DO i need to dl for my NS(non server patch) to work?

Are you going to host a LAN match by yourself to make the movie?

Well, a couple of friends are going to do the movie. The laser effect was cool so I thought we should add it but I couldn't find one and I didn't know how to have the laser in a non-server-patch LAN. ANy help?

Well, first of all, get the server patch. It's small, and you'll need it if you want the server to work the way you are used to. Second, go to the adminmod site and follow the instructions for installation. Because adminmod is a metamod plugin itself, it will install metamod for you. After that, follow the included help file instruction for setting up adminmod to work properly.

After all that, download the lasersight plugin. Install it (it should have a decent readme file, I can't remember). If the plugin doesn't work, you are in the same bag as me, as I can't get the damn thing running.

Isn't the server patch 80 megs? Doesn't that screw up your gaming if you LAN? and DOESN"T IT TAKE 20 hours to dl it with a 56k modem?
