Battery-drain regressed to earlier version?

So just put in an hour or so w/ the new silent running update (w/ a new game) and noticed that the battery drain on the seaglide now seems to be as fast as it was in the version a year or so ago (before i got the game myself, but noticeable in jack's older video's). Went a tad over 200m away from the lifepod and the battery had already run down around 5%. Seem to recall that pre-SL update it would drain quite a bit slower.

So was that an intentional battery nerf, or just another unintended bug from the update?

The old heavy drain was around 1% per second, so almost a third of what you determined. With 5% per 200m, you can get 4km range on a battery, which is plenty, imho.

When I have the Seaglide (even back in the high-drain versisions), I tend to swim long distances on the surface with it off (go faster on the surface), then use it to dive down to depth quickly and the Air Bladder to go back to the surface. (Note: always swim on the surface without the Air Bladder deployed as putting it out slows you down.) I also use the Seaglide as a Flashlight replacement to cut down on the tools I have to carry.

How fast is the air bladder per 100m? I know SeaGlide is basically 10 m / s, so for every 100m depth you need about 10 seconds if you go straight up.

I finally used the Air Bladder for the first time ever, and I have to say I'm moderately impressed with it. Obviously it's useful for rapidly ascending from the deep, and also for staying above water if you need to idle for a bit (such as waiting for time to pass in-game without wanting to pause the game). But there are two mildly interesting 'bugs' of sorts from using it.

The first is when you deflate it, it makes a gurgling sound as the gases bleed from the Bladder into the water. The sound itself I have no problem with; it's that it makes the sound also when you're standing out of water... While it doesn't affect gameplay, it is a bit illogical when that happens.

The second one is when you inflate it, obviously you swim slower and can't dive when it's deployed. But if you press its hotkey when deployed (put it away) or switch to another tool without deflating it, it's logically still deployed... So why doesn't it affect swimming while it's still 'active'? It reminds me of the Iron Boots in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - they weigh Link down considerably when worn, but taking them off (while they are still on your person) doesn't affect Link's weight or speed at all. :open_mouth: In either game it doesn't quite make logical sense.

I've encountered the same bug on the mountain island  I would assume this will be covered in the polish month along with thousands of others.

The Air Bladder is strange. You log back into the game, you take the Air Bladder and inflate it and then either unequip it or even stash it in a locker. That way when you really need it, it doesn't take oxygen from your dwindling supply to inflate. And when you swim on the surface of the way, don't leave it equipped because it does slow you down. Just unequip it, inflated, and you're already.

Silly, strange, but easy to figure out. :)

    Aaah yes the Iron Boots...

I'd assume those things will be looked into with the Polishing as well ^^
I've never used the Air Bladder, but I should give it a go on my next playthrough. It's one of the items I've never ever used yet.

The Air Bladder is great for shallow free swimming as well as doing deep dives down to Lifepods and Wrecks prior to getting the Seamoth. When you're low on oxygen and clear to ascend, you equip the already inflated Air Bladder and up you go, even when you pass out from no oxygen. Has saved me on many an occasion. For distance trips for minimum Seaglide power consumtion, you swim on the surface to over top, Seaglide down, explore, then Air Bladder back up to the surface.

I usually just go with Pipes, but a combination of the two might be a nice trick.

    And speaking of pipes... xD

I tried pipes last year and found them hard to make work. I may have to look at them again.

Yeah, air bladder is a nice, easy way to ascend and it doesn't take a lot of space. A nice item to have to early, pre-seamoth exploration. It ascends faster than you swim (for the most part) and doesn't seem to trigger predators as often.

The only real downside, not that it is much of one, is that it isn't as useful if your using your seamoth or prawn, or obviously for deeper places. Not going to be much good in the lost river or lava zones.

Pipes work a lot better than they used to, but they take up a lot of space in your inventory.

They're sooooo much easier to work with now! You can even branch them off like I showed in my thread I linked to. Great if you're using them to dive down to deeper areas (for whatever reason) and need a "breathing spot" to refill on oxygen without going all the way to the surface ^^

About a few games back, I'd tried out the new pipes and found them better than what was available August 2016. I'd not added them to my repertoire but now I think I might, especially for special tasks like you did in your topic on running air down to the Lost River (which I've not yet explored in any game). I'll have to study your topic thoroughly.

It took a few hours, and some close deaths. I could have saved a few pipes by starting in the water column directly above the LR entrance, but I started at the beginning of the crevice instead. The journey wasn't terribly difficult, other than a few grazings with the Warper and Crabsquids... Since I didn't have a seaglide or seamoth, escaping from danger was difficult.

It was time consuming since I could only carry so many pipes with me at once, and then I had to swim back up, then all the way back to the shallows and kelp forests for Titanium, then all the way back. I did take the time to make Fins for an extra little boost though.

An important thing is to make sure you branch some pipes off every now and then for oxygen on the way down / on the way back up. You couldn't do that with the old pipes, but the new ones allow for branching off so you can make multiple chains.

The biggest concern will be the wildlife, and evading them while lying your chain or traveling along it. THe second biggest is possibly running out of titanium, depending on how long your chain is. I had to start extending my resource searching after a while, but I think there's enough titanium in the Safe Shallows alone and the outskirts of the nearby kelp forests to build a chain and a small base without requiring you go into say the Crash Zone for the titanium there.
