Research Computer?

Would it be good to have to research blueprints or new data from scans at a computer? The computer could get upgraded with more CPU power and more computers build to create a research lab (MP room with research computers and equipment). Some games use the concept of research time to increase the thrill of new discoveries.

Pros:
  • The thrill of finding a blueprint might get increased as it takes more time to achieve the new tech
  • It offers a cheap way of having a kind of research lab where all kinds of things could be researched
  • The infection, transfusion and bioresearch could be done with the computer.

Cons:
  • Although research would run in background and you still need time to find tech, you might want to build things immediately.
  • Maybe you would rather like that all research will be done at a Precursor facility rather than at your base.

So what's your opinion?

Unfortunately I accidently hit the return button, cutting out the third option: other idea. Someone should avoid to allow the return button to close the poll editing.

Another thing that got cut out, was the information that many computers upgraded by more CPUs could increase research speed by factors up to more than 100, allowing really different research times for things on a large scale.

    Possible things to research:
    • advanced hard to find blueprints
    • Precursor tech after finding data on how the Precursors tech worked
    • Data processing from the hand scanner on things like eggs, creatures, minerals, etc.
    • Data needed for a species to breed or use the transfuser on them.
    • Using data gained on your infection and from Precursor facilities as well as eggs to process a recipe for the cure
    • Researching the big rocket project. Maybe not a tech found anywhere, but rather a question to the computer of how to escape and stepwise with new tech discoveries the computer comes up with rocket tech solutions.

Didn't this technically use to be a thing before the scanner (essentially a handheld computer) was added? With the fragment analyzer?

In a very crude way and not allowing any speed ups by more CPUs or more analyzers. You could only speed up by finding more fragments. And there was no PDA news at that time. It was also used on every single tech, including the things you should know immediately for survival, so forced an unnecessary waiting for beginners items.

I rather thought this for more advanced tech or additional info not immediately necessary for survival, because it sucks to wait for research on a thing you immediately need.

But with speed ups and time to research? Who knows? That's why I made the poll.

Just make a new thread and page Foxy? Also, didn't they used to sort of do this with the fragment analyzer?

I didn't like the fragment analyzer that much, with all that disadvantages:
    1. It forced to wait for ALL tech to be analyzed. Even the basic ones needed ASAP for survival.
    2. It needed only 1 fragment and made all the other fragments useless if you just waited longer.

If waiting is involved in a game you have to do it the right way and not force it on the players when they don't want to wait. Just like the fabrication time implementation being wrong, as it blocked the user. And then the wrong conclusion that because it didn't work it isn't needed.

And then there is a difference between scanning and researching. Or you just later scan the Carar cure and immediately get the cure tech. That's probably why you have to grow eggs, otherwise we could just get the cure in an instant.

Normally with tech there would have been 3 times and developments too:
    1. scanning time on fragment
    2. research time to find out how to produce it (could be based on CPU hours, not man hours; working in background)
    3. fabrication or breeding time to produce it (could be based on drone hours for drone created constructs; working in background)

Now in the game we only have scanning time left and breeding time.
