Can I switch to experimental and still use my current game save? / Extreme lag on a beefy system

The reason being, I have a fairly beefy system but Subnautica has become so bogged down that no matter what I do I still get 2-6 fps in a lot of locations.
specs: i7-3930K / 32GB RAM / GTX 980 Ti 6GB / Samsung 850 Evo SSD / Seagate 7200 rpm dedicated swap HDD
Currently I have 3 bases built: one fairly complex one near lifeboat 5 with 7 multipurpose rooms, a moonpoool and a scanner room; one simple one way over in the mountain region with a thermal reactor connected by 5 power transmitters to a single habitat piece with a fabricator and a locker; and another one with a thermal reactor, 2 power transmitters and just a few habitat pieces (plus the obiquitous fabricator and locker).
I've tried clearing the cache over and over, stripping the save0000 folder down to just empty CellsCache, CompiledOctreesCache and screenshots folders and the gameinfo.json, global-objects.bin, scene-objects.bin and screenshot.jpg files.
I've tried going into the F1, F3 and F8 menus/screens and fiddling with the settings, cutting them down to bare minimum.
I've tried every suggestion for nVidia control panel settings in the subnautica and steam community forums.
Still I get lag when there is a lot (not really, in my opinion, but relative to non-laggy places it's a lot) of stuff around (like my base, with 3-story alien containment aquariaum, many small fish, several large fish and a few reefbacks). Notably it only occurs when I am in the Seamoth.
