So long, then. I don't care about consistency checks, since I use and will always use NS defaults. They're beautifully crafted works of art and I see no reason to replace them.

Model consistency checks. It makes sure that your models are defaults by checking it's exact size and comparing it to the server's. This stops cheaters, I believe.

It will be a server side option, so you fools who turn it off can go play on your servers and play your own game. We'll stay on the good ones...

Well, if the only thing that is keeping someone playing is their ability to use different graphics, good riddance.

I feel the same way. The reason you'd want "new" models for any other mod is because the stock models don't look all that good. In the case of NS, the models are all excellent and gorgeous, so I see no reason to change them unless you want to do something like, say, remove the skulk bite model, which in this case is very questionable in its legitimacy (if not simply a cheat in the first place).

Yeah it prevents people from making models with lets say a RED head and a blue body and allows autoaimers to wrok can add spikes to models and a bunch of other bad stuff.

The model replacement is simply not worth it, since a skulk is... well, a skulk, and no other model is a skulk. The only reason people would use other models is because they are cheating. Make it on always I sez! <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->

The models, skins, animations, sounds, etc. in this mod are above average from many other mods that I've played. However, that does not mean that they won't become bland and stale after a few months of play. If the developers want to make up for a crippling blow like this, then they'll most likely need to keep updating, add new things to the game to make it fresh again. Since NS has only been out for about a month I'm guessing they plan on adding alot of things, so for now I doubt this model consistency will be much of a problem. But later on in NS's life, it may have an impact.

I think thats what I meant to say... only people who want to cheat change default models, and all that was spawned by CS lamers

That's why it can be turned off. Once people start getting tired of having to keep default models, they'll just start turning off consistency checks

Crippling blow? NS is not a model slideshow, it's a GAME. The GAMEPLAY is what's important, not the models. Calling this a "crippling blow" is like saying "I'm not watching basketball anymore because I don't like the team's new uniforms" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I like the default models, and I never bother changing them in any game anyway. That said, I think "to stop cheating" is a pretty stupid reason to enforce model consistency. If someone wants hot pink marine models, all they have to do is hook an OpenGL function to color all the triangles of appropriate color to hot pink. That's easier than trying to mess with 3d modeling IMO. Did forcing consistency eliminate hacks in any other game? No, of course not. Let people use custom skins/models if they want instead of giving people a false sense of security. The inherent design of NS makes cheating unworthwhile, which I think is good enough.

Well right now i use a skulk model that is completely black as to make it easier for them to eat me and I use marine models that have tie-died HA because I am a little strange. Will the new patch make me take them off?

Actually, you cant stop anybody from changeing the colors on their models, only the size, ie: voodoo models with mile long spike coming out of them.

Hmm.. well, the only reason I would use different models then the ones already provided, is if those cute little anime drawings of the aliens that someone made (sorry i forgot your name!) were turned in to models..

if you have no idea what im talking about go check out the Art work forums.

I love the current models too, so dont get me wrong.

and cheaters suck.. so I guess if this will help detuer cheaters then by all means do it.. I guess if cute anime models ever did come out, then they could just 'special case' the server code to include these in the model consistency check...

    cheers,
    Lazerus

Actually, come to think of it, I don't like the idea of across-the-board model consitancy. I think a good idea would be a servermodel.cfg of some sort, with a list of models to be checked for consitency, and should by default only include the alien v_ models. Not sure how to deal with h4x0r types that make easily-seen models or skins, though.

He probably isn't joking, and if I were (I can't say g-a-y) homosexual I'd resent the implication that I was created by Counter-Strike or its community. That would disturb me to no end.

I don't want to see this simply because I want Coil's chibi-Kharaa to be made into custom models. Otherwise, if people want to make every skulk a big pink glowy box, then it's probably a good idea to enforce model consistency.

Wha? Since when has there been a problem with people making vivid model skins to make everything stand out?

ALL: We can safely assume that this is Natural Selection, not CS. Because of the nature of the maps we play, we so often hear the enemy before we see him. Having vivid models won't do jack because we have no instagib/snipers in there.

Also, we must point out the fact that when you modify the v_*.mdl's to make them a very bright color, the game looks like teh donkey poop. Anyone who does that only has the joke on them. I sympathise with the poor sap.
