tbh, ns:source would of been better than ns2, by far, everything i hear about ns1 sounds more fun

NS1 gorge was more fun. Alien commander is more balanced and makes more sense. Maybe the devs can find the right balance make gorges build more types of structures.

An engine change wouldn't change the game mechanics, so I'm not really sure what you are saying.

The gorge went though all this in NS2 beta. I personally feel his is way better now than in any of the old iterations but I guess not everyone played beta.

This is NS2 and it would be pants if it was just a pretty version of the original.

I didn't play ns1, but current khamm and gorge need some love. khammanding can be boring sometimes and the cyst system is infuriating.

    NS1 gorge: 10

By now. How do you count OP?
You should count the people too, that say NS1 gorge is a balance problem and kham is the solution. Even if both needs some love.

You posted 10 vs 8. If you count the last vote for gorge as the 10th, there are only 5 votes for alien com following that. This has nothing to do with you not updating fast enough because 8+5 != 16

    Math how does it work?

I'm not counting people who beat around the bush. If you prefer the alien commander explicitly over the Gorge, then I count that. If you prefer Gorge explicitly, then I count that. I'm not going to count posts like "I like the Alien Commander, but it's not optimal, and I think Gorges need to work together with them more." because how is that in favor or either or? This isn't about potential changes or anything. It's about if you had to choose one or the other, even if you like both or dislike both, which would it be?

I last updated at 2:04 AM PST. The score was 10:8 at that time. Here are the following posts before or at that time:

Mhh... It's your thread. Do what you want. But this is heavy biased. Even your example does obvious say: "I like the Alien Commander..." Just because he isn't perfect yet, doesn't mean that we don't like the game-mechanic of it.

You are comparing a NS1 gorge that is not existent in NS2, (The people can't see the problems he would create. And they don't remember the problems he had. Because humans glorifying everything in the past.) with the existing Kham and all his problems that are obvious.

If you don't count the people that like the new mechanic but don't think it is perfect, than you are making up your own result.

€dit: Oh and why do you give me this "Reading how does it work" again? It seems you had understood that we disagree on a particular opinion, not that I haven't red your post.

It's not biased. Do you prefer having an Alien Commander or having Gorges build stuff? I don't care if you don't think the Alien Commander is balanced, fun, or whatever right now. Regardless of whether or not it's balanced, do you prefer the concept? The Lochness Monster could or could not be real, but do you believe it is? There's only one of two possible answers: YES or NO. "I don't know" or "There could be" is not a valid answer.

That's a Gorge. No matter what UI it goes through to place buildings, it's the exact concept; a distributed effort to do the Commander's job only available to a select alien unit. You're merely arguing semantics at this point as to what to call it or what it looks like or anything else.

Look, it's not my job to teach you basic reading comprehension skills. It's not my job to teach you how to think about concepts. The question at hand is "Do you prefer a solo person commanding the team directing its upgrades and building construction or do you prefer the effort distributed to select Alien units as it was in the original; in this case which are Gorges." That post is pretty explicit. The poster states that he wants:

QUOTE

a special class of alien

No commander here. Instead, it's placed on a special class of Alien. Semantics aside, this is the concept of the Gorge.

QUOTE

that can bring up the command console wherever he is

The Command Console is used for? Right, placing structures that provide advantages like resource harvesting, access to upgrades, etc. Oh, like how the original Gorge worked?

QUOTE

yet act like a traditional NS1 gorge

Yet, that's exactly what it is. The only difference being aesthetics like the interface by which it places structures. But, the concept is exactly the same; distributing the effort of a single commander onto a special class of Aliens.

Maybe you two should get some reading comprehension skills and an ability to look deeper into what people say before accusing me of a "heavy bias" (Laughable accusation too, considering there's only one post in favor of Gorges that you see as being vague and the potential fact that Alien Commander will be winning once I update the results.)

    Oh yeah:

QUOTE

And this not for kham?
    http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...t&p=2015138

No personal preference was stated here. They merely listed what they saw as the pros and/or cons of current and past. Whether or not you think the Announcer commander is better than Gorges building, do you still prefer it to the Gorges building? Because, we're talking about the concepts regardless of how they were implemented; wisely or poorly; optimally or suboptimally, and so on.

1.) In NS1 it was a real pain in the onus when one single gorge decided what upgrades the team gets. (See what I did there?) In NS2 it is at least clear, that this one person is the kham and not a random player that dropped the DC / MC / SC first.
2.) I like that there is some new kind of playing the game. The kham is different from the com. It is like a completely new game. I mean, it's not, that the gorge got cut out of the game. He just needs more stuff to do.

So, yeah. At the conclusion, I say. I prefer a gorge and a kham existing in the game instead of cutting the kham out. You don't make this game better, if you cut out the parts that weren't in NS1. You make it better, by improving the gorge and the kham. There are so many possibilities to make both fun.

    To name just a few:

A Nydus-Canal building for the gorge that works like a teleporter for every alien beside onos. (Needs second hive and upgrade from the kham, to balance early game.)

A ramp-up for the heal spray. It has been nerved that much, because a healing gorge in an offensive was to powerful. But healing things out of combat is boring. So make the heal spray more powerful, the longer the target wasn't damaged.

Make an kham-upgrade for the heal spray, so it does over heal to aliens giving skulks 10 or 20 Points more armor for 5 seconds. To bring the gorge near battles.

Make a kham-upgrade for the heal-spray, so it is able of reviving fallen aliens, as long as the player isn't respawned. (Would need a few heal-sprays to revive, so the gorge is vulnerable in this time.) This would be the asymmetric counterpart to marine weapon recycling. The gorge couldn't revive you, if you died in the middle of enemy marines. But if you died just around that corner with your pretty fade, the gorge there could revive you. LESS FRUSTRATING! YAY! :D

Give the gorge the ability to temporary infest a small area. This will tighten the bond between gorge and kham. Maybe you could even introduce the need for infestation to place hives again.

Put Leap out of the hive-2-tech-tree. A default-alien ability can never compete with spore or blink. It is obvious, that it doesn't belongs in this tech-tree, because it destroys the options you have there. Every kham will research leap first, if he has the choice. Instead create a completely new building for the skulk upgrades. If you need a second hive for this building it will be remain into mid-game.

To this new skulk-upgrade-building you can add a res-for-kill upgrade only for the skulk.

To this new skulk-upgrade-building you can add an upgrade that makes the skulk-model smaller, (maybe in 3 steps) so they scale with marine weapon upgrades.

You see? There are so many possibilities to make the Kham AND the gorge work and fun. So stop being always in the past and get creative. You don't make things better by destroying them. Things get better by creating.

i like some of those ideas except the ones which would be totally imbalanced like resurrection and teleport.

the maximum marine weapon 'recycle' is if you pick up 25 grenade launcher/flamer plus welder = 30 resources. afaik you can't reclaim a jetpack or even mines, yesterday i got a chance to play marines and always bought a jetpack to fly back to my dropped gear (one time i could see dropped mines but it wouldn't let me pick them up, then they just disappeared). going by the premise that game balance is more or less working atm, i can't see resurrecting fade/onos being a good idea.

alien teleport is something which is suggested quite frequently, and it's quite obvious there are about as many people who are firmly against the idea. personally i don't like it even if you look beyond the balance issues because i simply love the alien skittering through vents/corridors to navigate the map, i certainly don't want a cowardly and dull-ass 'kharaa phase gate' ability in any shape or form.

    Why?
A sequel should build on its original, not re-invent the wheel.

Starcraft 2, not C&C 4. NS1 with better graphics and some great additions is what the community wanted originally, and what we thought was coming.
So far NS2, while good, is not quite matching that vision.

So that said, if they made the commander a better solution, I'd be all for it.

But as it stands now....Gorge Bush all the way.

starcraft 2 is different to broodwar, but it's inferior in almost every way imaginable besides tech stuff (graphics and connectivity). even battlenet was superior for broodwar, for a start it didn't lock my account and ask me to reset my blasted password every 5 minutes because my isp decided to give me a new ip.

ns2 is not awful compared to ns1... it's just different. it has some new ideas which are good - like alien commander and power nodes etc (although they could perhaps use some tweaking). obviously not everyone feels the same way about some of the changes, but it's a great game which takes on the 'trademark' NS1 gameplay successfully.

a very important point is that broodwar was immensely popular, so why the hell did blizzard change/ruin it?

NS1 community size was okay for such an old game/mod, but it was nothing compared to broodwar or counterstrike. it makes sense that you would want to make a sequel more easy on the eye and lower the 'entry level' skill barrier. an indie game like NS2 will succeed through the attention it gets - and if it was NS1 with boosted graphics then chances are it would not get anywhere close to the attention it deserves.
