drako25, try again to delete entire NS2 and make a clean install of 229 build.

It does sound like your d3dx is broken.. And to the best of knowledge you cannot uninstall it, as every dx installer will tell you.
If reformatting is scary, just try what I recommended previously and install a dual boot? That would definitely rule out hardware being at fault.
Or you can research hacked methods of un installing dx..

Theres a free resourceful app called file monitor and process monitor.. Helpful to see whats being accessed during that test to see whats failing or what is interfering.. Though this is more "digging" and a dual boot might save you time if in fact its a hardware issue.

Well I do have a extra hard drive laying around. I can just install windows on that, and see what happens. I'll do that in a few hours and let ya guys now how it went. Also I forgot to mention there was a command I found to run in command prompt, its suppose to check for errors in windows files. I forget the switch, but it ran for like 20 mins and said everything was good.(of course) It wasn't disk check or anything like that.

Also I'm no stranger to reformatting. I try to make it a point to do it about once a year anyways sense window is known to degrade as time goes on, in one way or another.

Chkdsk was the command more than likely.

You don't need a separate hard drive, you can just create a separate partition and install windows on it, I.e. dual boot.

My line of thinking is what if its your hard drive thats the issue? you wouldn't know if you swapped it out (I'm pretty sure its software anyways, BUT..)

Let us know :)

How would I make a dual boot with a drive that has already been installed to? Partition magic?

Also I tried uninstalling, opting back out of beta, and redownloading, no go. Going to install on this other drive real fast.

That should compile a shader using the tool that Microsoft ships with D3DX and generate a file called output.txt. If you could then post that output.txt file maybe we'll get a better idea about what's going wrong.

To use this fxc tool we need a D3DREF9.dll (version 6.0.5300.0, I don't know whether this is the last version) which comes with a Complete DirectX SDK. And fxc uses D3DX9_43.dll, not a D3DX9_42.dll
drako25, now you can try post the info that Max requested above.

Same error as before for me. Red x error, "d3dx9_43.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error".

Also IH I found a small 60gb partition on this drive, so I'm installing on that. lol

New install on a second partition on the same harddrive. Fixed. If you guys have any clue what to try on that other boot, let me know. Otherwise I guess this is the best fix, sense I think there was something very wrong with my direct x.

Glad its not hardware. :)
Too bad we can't find an easier solution though..
Perhaps there exists a safe and easy way to uninstall or repair DX.. I just don't know of it

Ah SFC is the command I was looking for. That's the one I tried, and said there was no problems lol. Only took about 6 minutes to complete.

I have a feeling this issue is sometimes going to be the result of what happens when every game company has there only directx redist to install anytime you install something on steam. I'm sure there's always going to be a chance that re-installing some of the same components over and over again will result in this kind of thing. I think this computer has only been up and running for about 7 months. I built it earlier this year. It's pretty clean all I do on this computer is game. But anyhow that's what I suspect. I always found it odd how every game has to install a re-dist. It's like OK all these direct x files are in a full june2011 build on Microsoft's website right? Why not have the player download it once, and have every game have a check to see if the files are there before installing them again. If they aren't there run the re-dist. Idk maybe not all the files game companies need are all wrapped up in that one install, idk for sure.

Anyhow I think I'll stick with this solution. It was pretty easy to move everything to this partition. I changed all my user related document folders to point to my old ones on the other partition, so its more or less back to normal already. Steam is still on the same partition/drive it was on before. I'll maybe mess around with the failed windows OS sometime this next week, to see if there is anything else that works. But I'm not going to waste my entire evenings working on it anymore, like I've been doing up to this point. It's time to get some NS2 time in.(steam thinks I've already played for 3 hours lol?)

Thanks IH and Max for all the assistance up to this point, also everyone else that started to chime in a bit later. I'm still open to try any "easy" fix, just to say we found the real cause for future players. But lets not stress our brains on it anymore. If a random idea pops in there hey let me know. Otherwise ty for everything. I'll be seeing you guys in game very soon.

drako25, if you're still have a will to experiment with DirectX, you can look to this article. You can try Registry Hack or DirectX Happy Uninstall. Good luck!

And after some quick searching for that error, you should try this just in case.
I want to find the source! and this seems like a common issue for any game from my searching

Also try metroid's suggestion
Glad things are working tho :)
