Can only see console Error:Direct3DDevice
I'm experencing one of the black screens of death. This one, is completely dark except for the console, that I pull up manually. I can hear all the ambient noise, and I can even hear noise from me scrolling over the menu buttons. Please help guys. I'm sorry if my post is long. I know I've seen lots of people posting they continue to have problems with this bug, and there are some threads that seem to just die pertaining to this.

[FIX comment]
Also I tried running a little app to test my direct X, called fxc.zip located at This Website. Your suppose to run the batch file and get a log. It should tell ya what's wrong in the log. However it may or may not give you results depending on which directx files you have. But when I ran it I got the error, "d3dx9_43.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error", that popped up upon launch, not in a log file. I've seen this error before. I saw it when trying to run the game called Limbo. I banged my head against the monitor for two weeks or more trying to fix this problem. I re-installed all direct x installers, and nothing ever fixed it. In the end the [FIX] ended up being me re-installing windows. It worked like a charm of course, why wouldn't it? Good luck to anyone else experencing this issue. If your just now running into the problem. If its on this game. Follow the steps the Dev's layed out first. That works for I'd say 95% of people with the problem. I got the steps later in this post. If that doesn't work. Don't go far and wide like I did to try to find a end all, be all, solution. Start considering backing up all your important files, and repair/re-install windows. It sucks royally to have to resort to that, but it's not really that hard, especially if you have a place to store your files, another HD, jump drive, another computer on the network, etc.

I've tried about all the things I could find on this site, and others on how to resolve this issue. I probably dropped a hour or two a day, sense launch, into trying to get this to work.

What I've tried. This is UWE recommended steps. Posted in various other threads.

QUOTE

-Run dxsetup in drive\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2\redist\directx\
-Delete the folder drive\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2\ns2\shaders
-Press the Windows key and R (Win+R) and type %APPDATA%\Natural Selection 2 then press enter.
IMPORTANT NOTE HERE: in this folder there is no "cache" folder. I suppose its only generated when the game is successfully able to load the shader for the first time.
-Delete all the files in this folder
-Verify the Integrity of the NS2 Game Cache:
-In Steam, go to the Natural Selection 2 menu option, Right-click>Properties>Local Files>Verify Integrity of Cache
(this will re-download the files you deleted, but it will be the correct files this time)
-If all else fails, delete local Steam files for NS2 and reinstall NS2.

-Sense this game works on my other computer I tried copy/pasting all of the cache folder in appdata/roaming/ into my computer that doesn't work. Also tried copy and pasting all files straight over to there respective folders on the computer that doesn't work.(all files from steamapps/common/natural selection 2)

-I downloaded a full dx11 redistributable on microsofts website and ran that.
-I modified the system_options.xml to match my max resolution 1920x1080
-I modified my own resolution to match the default res that it initially sets up by default after first start.
-I copy and pasted both the shaders in both natural selection 2/ns2/shaders and natural selection 2/core/shaders and pasted then in both folders.
-I uninstalled all of my ati drivers/software and used a driver cleanup utility to wipeout all occurances of the ati drivers and reinstalled the latest.
I use a dual monitor setup.
-I've tried setting my smaller monitor as the primary monitor, and tried the default ns res, and set ns to my max res.
-I've also tried disabling one monitor(i did this because a known issue with C&C4 was exactly like this and wouldn't work unless a monitor was disabled)
-I've had a friend invite me to join a game. You can hear me join all the way into the game, and I can hear the ambient sounds of the ready room. My friend can see me jumping around.
-I tried to alt+enter to go to window mode. It does switch to window mode, but the results are the same. Even if I switch to window and try to start the game up in window mode.
-I tried the default settings on my catalyst settings, which seemed to work for some people.
-I tried a profile download from amd's website that said it fixes flickering issues for crossfire setups on natural selection 2, just for kicks. Clearly I don't use crossfire sense I only have one GPU.
-I have no overlay programs, but I did disable AVG.
-I discovered a logmeinrescue related display driver. I uninstalled that app sense I installed it by mistake, sense I was trying to walk a friend through it. Rebooted with only my display driver showing in device manager. More or less restarted my entire routine at the top of this list.
-There was something on the forum somewhere about nvidia physics possibly needing to be installed for this. I don't use there hardware obviously, but Hey tried installing that.

I can play a multitude of games without any issues like this. All crysis games. All Half-life 2, and source games(L4D/L4D2 CS:S), Skyrim, Bioshock 1/2, All Assisin's creed games, Dawn of war II, etc etc. This reminded me of a strange issue with source games, if you don't have the correct drivers for your monitor, or your using the wrong driver, sometimes you would get directdraw errors and the games would crash before it even launches, or give you strange resolution settings. It likely isn't related, sense I don't have that problem on those games. I wish I could get this thing working, I've been looking forward to NS2 sense it was announced forever ago. I played the original for more hours then I could account for on Left 4 Dead, which is astounding but me and my best friend ran that game into the ground, loved it. I've never given up hope that UWE would finish this. And now I would like to be able to enjoy it on my meaty computer if you guys can help me figure this out.

I've spent so much time trying to make this work for me. I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable, and I'm usually pretty good about figuring out problems pertaining to games, and finding some little thing that it takes to get it working. But this is just crazy, idk what this problem is. I know it seems to be one of the little gremlins that is in the game that even BETA people have experienced before. I'm going to just freak out if this turns out to be some stupid setting I can change on my computer. If that is the case then I'll be happy. Please help me out here fellas I want to enjoy this game. It's true it works on my other comp. But that one just isnt up to par with this generation of game. And I want to experience the game on my main gaming rig if at all possible.

The first 50 or so lines of my log.txt
there is about 74,000 lines in this log, all of them showing a failure to load the shader, and shows all the files it failed to load.

When you verify integrity of cache is anything downloaded?
I've seen this error before and forwarded it to a dev, and it was unclear why the shaders wouldn't load or compile

    I'll inquire further for you
  • drako25drako25 Join Date: 2012-11-05 Member: 167229Members
Ya it downloads like 43 files. But those files go into the steamapps/common/natural selection 2/ns2/shaders/ nothing appears in users/.../appdata/roaming/natural selection 2/ That folder doesn't even come up, until the game attempts to load for the first time. Which is pretty much normal for any game. A folder shouldn't normally pop up there until a game launch's, at least not from my experience. After the game does attempt to launch. You can see the shaders failing to load in console, and when you exit the game, there are two files in the app data area, and thats the config and the log. No cache folder at all. I suggested this in the known issues forum, but I don't really thing its possible now sense I tested the same install on my second computer. However is it possible the build for the free download of NS2 is any different at all, then the payed for version? I was thinking about that originally but I discounted it recently sense I tested the download on my lower end PC. In any case I'm baffled how this folder continues to not come up in app data area. I mean it doesnt seem to matter, sense I did attempt to copy and paste all files from my working PC to this one, all files under appdata and all files under steam, and it still did the same thing. It has something to do with this,

Error: Direct3DDevice::Unable to create default shader
Error: Direct3DDevice::Unable to create screen shader
Error: Direct3DDevice::Unable to create default shader
Error: Direct3DDevice::Unable to create screen shader

Is there certain graphics cards that the game isnt able to understand, and fails to load the shaders? It's almost as tho its acting like I have a out of date card or something kinda like that. I might just be shooting in the dark, but it just seems so weird to get a direct3d related error. It's what I would expect if it was say a Directx11 only game and I was trying to run it on a non-dx11 graphics card.

Is there any kind of a update on this you can give me by chance? Is there anything else maybe you or the devs think I should try. I'm hoping we can resolve this problem, its so strange that none of the fix's people have tried and worked, don't seem to work for my situation. I think I have a pretty decent computer, I'm not sure why this particular game is having a problem :/

This really is baffling, you are one of two people who have reported this.
I know you said you installed dxsetup , but u also said full distributable from ms. so did you use the dxsetup that came with ns2? Located in the redist folder.

    Have you tried different drivers?
Can't think of what would stop your system from compiling the shaders..

edit: that log me in rescue display driver seems suspect..

Ok the logmein thing, i removed that before i even posted, because it was suspecious that it popped up under display adapters. Now I went ahead and tried a few drivers. I tested 10.6 10.8 10.10 and 10.11b. All created the same results. I did try the dxsetup under the ns folder. I actually have tried it a few more times sense typing this message. I'm not entirely sure what to try next. But if you want me to test something let me know, I'll repeat any steps if need be. This is so frustrating, I don't understand what it could be. I also tried msconfig, and disabled all non microsoft services, and all start-up items.

Create a dual boot just to be sure its not hardware? lol..
IDK man.. i'm out of ideas and you've done a great job at troubleshooting..
    anything showing in device manager?

I'll see if a developer is able to help on Monday.. sorry man :-/

edit: looking over that dxdiag again i see logmein video decoders and encoders are still present.. are you sure its gone?

Ok newer dxdiag I posted it in the OP. I removed the driver's via registry. I coudn't find any other instance of these drivers anywhere else. Let me know if ya guys can think of anything else I can try.

Have the devs had a chance to look at this specific issue yet Ironhorse? I'm eager to start getting some ns2 action in.

Also I experemented with creating a new account on my computer just to make sure there wasnt something weird with my app data for that one account. Meaning i went into control panel > users, and made a new test user account. I then proceeded to go over all the steps all over again. But the issue persists. It seems to me like its something related to the gfx. It's almost as though the game is not able to use this particular graphics card. Later today. I'm going to try something fun. Im going to pull one of my gfx cards out of my older working computer, and plug it into this one, and see if it starts to work. I have 2x HD 5770 junipers in that computer. I'll report back around 700pm CST on the results of that. If you have anything else the devs want me to test out let me know.

Those "couldn't create shader errors" are definiltely the cause of your problem. Those typically occur when you don't have the required version of the Direct3D runtime installed. Steam is supposed to automatically install this wen you run NS2 for the first time, but on your machine that may be failing for some reason.

The redistributable is the installer located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2\redist\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe

What happened when you ran it? Did it complete successfully?

I just ran that again for ya, at the end it said, "the components installed are now ready for use". It looks like that was successful. I still got a black screen, i can see the cursor, I can see the console. Alt+enter is the same story.

Edit: I just tried the beta release of the next patch, and its exactly the same.
Edit2: I just tried a juniper 5770 and it didn't make a difference. Oh well was a shot in the dark but I had to feel like I'm still trying things.

What I can't understand is if this is suppose to be a directx related issue, then what is it your game is wanting from my directx, that no other game cares about? I mean check by posts above. I play lots of newer games with varied directx versions. Also from all the other threads I've seen it appears there was a lot of people that had played during beta that had no problems, then when the full game launched, they no longer could play due to this issue. So I'm wondering what was significantly changed from the last beta build before the launch and now. Is there a chance I could try a pre-launch build. Just to see if it will launch on my computer? I'm not sure if that would help this situation, but I kinda want to test that, if we have nothing else to test.

Technically it is not a DirectX issue, but a D3DX issue. D3DX is an optional component of Direct3D and is not included in the standard install you get from Microsoft. There are many different versions of it and different games will use different versions. Looking on my computer -- which doesn't even have many games installed -- I have 22 different versions.

D3DX is used to compile shaders, and those log messages indicate that D3DX is failing to compile any of the shaders the game uses, which is why I high suspect that's the problem. Can you check that the file c:\Windows\System32\D3DX9_42.dll exists on your machine? This is the version that is required by NS2 and should have been installed by that installer.

I will check on that file as soon as I get a chance. I work till 5pm, but I'll see if I can get my GF to check and see if that's on my computer or not. But I wanted to at least take a moment to thank you Max for jumping in and trying to help me figure out what is going on with this issue. I really do appreciate it. Thanks.

Ok I had her search and she did find that file in system32. So it would seem I at least have the DLL for this in the correct location. If i delete this file, it should be placed back in that same location after I install your guys redist right? I was thinking about testing that when I get home. Anything else you guys want me to check while Im at it? (ill back up the dll to my desktop just incase)

Also I thought it important to mention this dll file is on my work computer. And there are no games, or ever was any games installed on this computer lol. I'm wondering if its a default file for windows 7.

drako: Can you do an md5 hash on your d3dx9_42.dll? I'm curious if maybe it's corrupted or something. Mine has the same time stamp as yours so they should be identical. Here's mine:

I deleted the file and it did get placed in the same area after I re-installed the redist in the ns2 folder. For fun I deleted all folders, deleted local content once again, and re-installed. But still the same issue exists. Can you inform me about how to do this md5 hash? I'm not familiar with that operation. The files size and date did not change when I installed the redist, its still the same. Anything else you guys want me to try out Max?

I did notice occasionally when I start the game, it crashes immediately, and the log file says something about the settings file cant be accessed or something like that. I've seen that message on a lot of other posts. If I get that again, I'll post that other log. Additionally, when I change to window mode, and try to exit the game sometimes ill get a error report, where I can submit it, and it has a dmp file in it, but I cant open that to see what it says.
  • WarmongerWarmonger Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13126Members, Constellation
Since you've deleted the dll and reinstalled it it's unlikely that is corrupted so there's probably no point in doing an md5 hash. If you still want verify though you can go to http://onlinemd5.com/ and browse for the file (or drag it into the box) and it'll give you the MD5 hash, which should match this: C6A44FC3CF2F5801561804272217B14D

I think Max or one of the other devs may need to troubleshoot further to figure out what's going on.

Can you try running test.bat from this package: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/386361/fxc.zip. That should compile a shader using the tool that Microsoft ships with D3DX and generate a file called output.txt. If you could then post that output.txt file maybe we'll get a better idea about what's going wrong.

That should compile a shader using the tool that Microsoft ships with D3DX and generate a file called output.txt. If you could then post that output.txt file maybe we'll get a better idea about what's going wrong.

"c:\windows\system32\d3dx9_43.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. etc etc"
I recall seeing something like this when I tried demoing limbo interesting. I'll see what I can do about this file.
Wow it seems incredibly hard to resolve this error. -

It doesn't appear that your redist contains this file. Im going to see what else I can do to try to fix this particular file.
Also out of curiosity I decided to run this on the computer that works with NS2 fine, and I get "failed to create D3D device", in the log. That is rather odd.

Here's my d3dx9_43.dll file if you want to try it: http://www.filedropper.com/d3dx943_1

I also run Win 7 64-bit. The MD5 hash on that file was: 86E39E9161C3D930D93822F1563C280D.

I received the same error when trying to run that test on my PC, which runs NS2 just fine:

Well I copied all directx dll's from my computer that can run NS fine, and the issue persists. I even still get that error that "c:\windows\system32\d3dx9_43.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. etc etc" again when running Max's app, even tho I just copied the same files from my other computer. I just don't get it. It's almost as though there is some other program that is interacting with the dlls that is failing. I mean you'd think copying the dll's over I'd at least get the same results as my other computer. Clearly I don't know a lot about how direct x functions. I'll try that dll but I'm really at my wits end with this. I'm very very close to just reformatting over this. I really don't want to, but I'm so tired of wasting all my time, day in and day out. I got some gaming I'd rather be doing you know.

I'll wait just a bit longer to see if Max or anyone else has some kind of magic solution to this before I do that. I just don't like giving up. There's tons of people out there that prob have this same issue. I mean you see forums all over the place where people will be like oh hey its fixed, but never says what they did. I'd like to resolve this without reformat so that there is some record on the inet on how to resolve that. I'm fairly certain this is not a issue with the game at all anymore. As such I would understand if UWE doesn't feel furthor inclined to assist.

That site had a lot of useful stuff to try. But none seemed to do a thing for me.

What I really need is a way to clean install directx. And there appears to be absolutely no freaking way to do this, sense it is so terribly integrated with windows.

drako25, you can try DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

Metroid if you see that link I provided in my last post, that site says to try that. I've ran a few different direct X installers, including that one. Most of them show they are installing files. I think one of them will just stop and say I have a newer updated version of directx, and I think that is the directx 9 specific installer that gives that message.

If your error is like mine, and is 73,000 lines, you wont be able to use pastebin lol. Besides im sure all of the lines we arent seeing are all the much of the same. file x wont load sense X shader isnt available.

I ran the direct x install in the ns2 folder and it seem to fix everything. Do not know why it didn't work with the other patches but works now.

This is just so unfair, why can't I be this lucky. I've run the directx redist in ns2 prob 20 times with no joy. Ugg!! Max help!! give me the miracle cure man. :(
