Why are Upgrades only in Multiples of 5?

<div class="IPBDescription">Just wondering...?</div>Noticed everything, from buildings to lifeforms to upgrades all come in multiples of 5.
The only exceptions are the special abilities (enzyme, med/ammo packs, EMP etc) since rightly they are not worth 5 res.
Won't it be easier to tweak balance with other numbers being used? (e.g. Recent Upgrade Chamber & Arms Lab upgrade costs were all reduced by 5, which can be quite a big step).
Not a complaint, just wondering?
