Flying Skulks?

Just wondering why we implemented flying skulks. Any answer will do, as the flying skulk is ridiculous in its own right, so even the most ridiculous or terse answer will suffice.

Because spikes are too hard to aim, which is coincidentally why people who think the lerk is in a good place right now never succeed as marines

I'm just wondering why the decision was made. I can at least understand the logic behind a lot of the decisions a little bit, but this just outright makes no sense.

I wouldn't get too used to the current lerk bite. Its obvious thats its too similar to the skulk's bite...and yea it turns it into a flying skulk. Its even better at spamming bites at a marine than the skulks. It clearly goes against what they initial said they wanted the poison bite to be. Im just kinda surprised it made it through its current form.
• TweadleTweadle Join Date: 2005-02-03 Member: 39686Members, NS2 Map Tester
I think there are legitimate concerns about the lerk but the lerk bite being similar to skulk bite isn't one of them. You only need to look at NS1 to realise that the 'flying skulk' syndrome isn't simply because of these changes.
• OutlawDrOutlawDr Join Date: 2009-06-21 Member: 67887Members
Right, that its a flying skulk isn't the main issue.

Spikes were only good if you are good at lerk. So SabaHell can come in and go 100 kills and 0 deaths with them, but most players do not do well with them. The lerk wasn't good to use and it needed something.

I think projectile spores deserves another look.

Bringing up the past here but Lerk sniping was not that bad.

Shotgun Spike Lerk was the best by an absolute mile, was so fun to play. Lerk with bite just doesn't work in my opinion, should be a ranged damage dealer, the kharaa already have skulk, onos and fade for melee.
• .ADHd.ADHd Join Date: 2012-02-18 Member: 146565Members
I think you meant to say fade with wings. That would be a more accurate analogy.

Oh come on. Stop your sarcasm. It's obviously a bug and other people have pointed out that the damage calculation of light damage is bugged.
So the answer of your question is: Because this is a beta and a beta will have bugs. Deal with it.

You mean the ridiculous speeds that can be reached with leap and walljumping, right? I have no idea why they are allowed to go that fast really. Combining it with celerity makes it very easy to do.

Celerity is fine though, it is basically useless if you are a Gorge.

I just love running round the marine base whilst they spend 2 mins trying to shoot me :P

Because the NS1 Lerk was fun as hell and hard to play. The NS2 Lerk will be harder to play when hitreg is improved.

You guys are strange (not all). First you cry for Lerkbite and now, when it is in, it is BS.

I really like the lerk and am trying to get very good at it. I was starting to get a good at it but then lerk bite came in and I started using that. You quickly fly up and bite marines before they relize whats going on. Super fun troll move.

Not sure what is meant by this, however I did actually face my first celerity skulk today and it was not a pleasant experience.

Who are "you guys"?

Personally I have voiced a lot of concerns regarding rapidfire spikes, but I've never advocated the return of bite for the Lerk. It's actually one of those areas I believe the ns1 had some issues -- mainly that bitelerk was extremely unforgiving for new players. A burst-fire spike model which I have previously advocated would avoid the potential issues caused by rapidfire spikes while also making it slightly more forgiving on new players.

The current poison DOT bite lerk with a million hps is in my opinion worse than the previous rapidfire spike lerk, although I would prefer neither.

@fana
Those PPL that asked for the Lerkbite to have a comeback, but as I said not all who wrote about the bite.
Just posted that after reading 1000 posts about the Lerkbite.

Alot of what you wrote in your last post could be adapted to many aspects of the game. Almost everything in NS1 and 2 is unforgiving for almost every aspect of the game itself.

OT, the DoT DMG is just usless in 99% of the time if it can be cured with a med, atleast in matches.
A betterway would be to inject bacteria in the Soldiers-Nanogrid, so that he can't use meds/ammopacks and catapacks.
Then to increase the energy cost to 33% of max and remove spikes and add Wingsword Nosedive, the Lerk would sacrifice himself and spears the marine with his wings, as tier 3.
So he has a clear Supportrole with a deadly Tier 3 instead of a mix of Support, attack and supress.

Seriously. Then learn it. Is that a big deal? No, it is not. If you're not good with it, than take another alien race. There are a lot of them.

Beside of that. Before 209 it was like: Marine vs Lerk -> Good Lerk wins most time, bad Lerk runs away. If you were lucky you could kill it. Anyways it was ranged and they were about to camp somewhere most time. Good tactic -> pistol, aim at head and empty the pistol. With 209 it's like: 3 marines vs 1 lerk -> Lerk simply flies through the marine group and poisons everybody with spores (if even), turns around and bites everyone to death with one-hits. Fix pls.

[edit]
Oh! And Lerk is too cheap. Marines have to pay for extra weapons. For stuff like mines 15 res (ridiculous expensive system, the whole system with the mines btw). Even for welder. And they have to pay for Jetpack (if the team gets there). Lerk itself is too cheap, too many options for too less res. Beside of that are the upgrades (if the prices didnt change, which were between 2 and 5 extra res or so when I played) for lerks (and aliens) in total too cheap.

Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy playing lerk with bite. I loved it in ns1. I just think there might be a way to make it more accessible for new players, while also keeping the core gameplay we want from the lerk.
