I don't really like the idea that the best way to track an enemy is by the icon rather than the actual 3d view.

because its called motion tracking? _motion_ as in the detection of movement.
Something moving in the vent? i dont know what it is, no one else knows what it is, the obs doesnt know what it is but its telling us _something_ is there.

Nice to read this. But I think this is not enough. As someone said, it's a counter to the whole Shade-Tech-Tree. No alien com will ever go shade on the first hive again. It also needs to be:

an upgrade that has to be researched on every obs

don't show stationary or slowly walking aliens

inform the aliens about the fact that they are visible for marines

The last point is especially important to counter the "Cheater!"-crying of new players. Beside its very helpful to not going suicide until you know there is an obs.

In the most extreme case, UWE could always adjust the Observatory to give a binary movement/no-movement signal for Kharaa activity within its radius. It would keep it useful for guarding against rushes and lone skulks, while stopping it from giving marines a direct combat advantage.

Well it could decloak aliens, which I'd find perfectly acceptable. Due to the reason that if aliens were cloaked in our base and we could only see them on the minimap, there would be a lot of spray n' pray or spychecking going on with the flamethrower.

Besides, an activation ability used in the early game shouldn't make the game end in the first minute. Which it was doing a lot of in previous builds.

So if cloaked things were to be removed from motion tracking, the energy cost for cloaking should be much greater. Which hasn't been addressed at all. As aliens can keep sending out waves of cloaked aliens. Or just make it a passive cloak and get rid of cloak rushes completely.

I think the Obs is fine, just make it have less HP, or make it more expensive. OR BOTH.

The main purpose of the new tracking is to detect cloaked/camouflaged Kharaa, whereas in NS1, MT did not track cloaked aliens.

The observatory should not be a hard counter to the entire Shade tech tree IMO.

Not to the entire Shade tech tree, no.
But definitly a counter to invisiblity.
    We - need - focus.
