Batman: Arkham City

Thoughts?
I must say I really really enjoy it so far and I'm only less than 10% in or so. The unarmed and armed combat is even better and smarter than Arkham Asylum. Unarmed enemies will now attack you simultaneously from many directions rather than one and one (must press counter for each attacker). Armed enemies will shoot out your convenient gargoyles if they see you escape towards it when they are nearby. You can also disarm them with the batclaw, special moves or by powering magnetic generators nearby but they are alarmingly quick to either resupply at a cabinet or pick it up again so it isn't something you can use to win easily. They even shoot out the magnets if you don't take the affected dude out, "I see what you did there batman!". If they suspect you are hiding under the floor they will throw in grenades after you and tons of other clever ai upgrades.

They've made exploring the open city much more smooth as well, batman can now use his grappler while sprinting (and not stopping), in midair and even boost you over the target so you can keep gliding for those timed missions and sidequests. Complete with augmented reality training for learning how to use your new stuff (flying through circles).

The only negative stuff I can come up with is when using a keyboard the new unlocked unarmed combat skills are placed on E, R, T, Y etc keys which makes it hard for me at least to distinguish if I got the right key stretching my finger in a hectic situation.

The addition of Catwoman isn't bad either :3

I'm quite ready to call this GOTY so far, despite being so near the end of the year.

Having finished this last week, I can at least say I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I do have some issues with it. First, it was buggy. It caused my display driver to die and restart on a regular basis, leading to periods of pausing for 10+ seconds. Patch today fixed another bug I was getting of game crashing if I pressed start too soon. The story is good to a point, and then rushes to a conclusion that's slightly nonsensical. The combat is definetely better. The flow has been improved over AA with being able to counter multiple people and ranged counter, and the quickflow gadgets are awesome. I do think they went a bit overboard with Riddler collection stuff and side quests though. It's a bit immersive breaking when the story is saying horrible stuff is happening right now, and yet you can continue to go on your collection hunt. Funnily enough, this punishes you later when an event happens towards the end of the game that you can't just ignore and you have to reload if you do.

To be honest Svenpa, you only really need to use E and T anyway. I didn't really find a use for the others. Punch a load of people to the floor and then use T.

As for GOTY, I can't say I'm qualified to say that as the only big new game I've played this year is Deux Ex 3, and I'm not convinced Batman beats that.

What I've played of it was pretty good, but I miss the linearity of Asylum. With all this ###### everywhere to do I feel conflicted on stopping to listen to radio chatter instead of seeking out my current objective. Doubt I'll even attempt the Riddler challenges.
It's weird, I really like it, but instead of it I'm playing Valkyrie Profile (admittedly for the first time ever, and it's been longer since I played a jrpg than since I played an action game) and don't really feel drawn otherwise.

End of game spoiler: Notice how the whole "Joker's blood is in clinics all across the city and thousands of people could be infected" plot gets dropped entirely? Well, the cure is gone, so I guess there's nothing to do really. Have fun dying, thousands of faceless people, nobody cares about you. At least not as much as about a homicidal clown, whose death is somehow a tragedy.

Was excited to get it until it came out, now I just can't be bothered at all with all this retarded DRM they shoved all up in its guts.

Seriously. TWO cd-keys?!

Steam AND GFWL AND Securom. The one that bothers me the most is GFWL because it's such a gigantic turd. Does Microsoft just bribe people to foist it upon their customers or what?

I'm going for the "buy but play the pirate version", route. Side effects include a clean conscience and PC along with ability to rename the game in the steam library.

I wasn't being sarcastic, two cd-keys was just the cherry on the ###### sundae.

GFWL is the worst.

Oh no. DRM. I won't play a game now! /facepalm
• lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
GFWL IS a gigantic turd. It has problems with advanced concepts like "validating a CD key" or "logging in." In the past it even threw error codes at you if you tried to do the REALLY cutting-edge stuff like, say, creating an account. All of those are things that prevent me from playing the game entirely. I prefer games to not have any DRM at all because that means I know that the DRM won't ###### everything up, but generally I don't complain about DRM unless it gives me a reason to. That's why you don't see me ranting against Steam here, or even the much-maligned securom, because neither gives me trouble. GFWL does.

So don't give me that lip. I'm a paying customer. But apparently to CERTAIN PUBLISHERS, "paying customer" doesn't mean "the source of all our revenue," it means "potential pirate."

You guys just need to learn to be less angry that your experience is delayed by 30 seconds.

Yeah, heavens forbid I ask to be treated as a customer. WHAT was I THINKING! PLEASE, allow me to take it all back! I promise to behave myself and no longer post complaints on internet forums. I mean, there might be CONSEQUENCES. I could get pepper-sprayed.

It seems to be simply a part of regular public discourse now. After all, it's only pepper, like what people put on food.

That pic is the most extreme example of someone who doesn't have a live login, and half of the screens can be ignored, what with some being an install screen, which every game does and others being update screens, which every game does.

But I can't spew "GLORIOUS PC GAMING MASTER RACE" if I accept such immense delays compared to consoles! (Unless the new xbox dashboard has ad commercials when starting a game).

It's due to have that shortly. You can once again shout glorious pc gaming master race and have tea partys with Hitler if you wish.

GFWL is so bad that even microsoft are beginning to give up on it (they moved the GFWL homepage to xbox.com/live/pc rather than having its own page like it used to).

When *microsoft* have realised that something is probably a bad idea and begin toning it down... damn.

Frankly I'm kinda surprised that Arkham City had GFWL. Whatever you think of DRM in general, GFWL is one of the least popular things out there. I've never met a single person who likes it. Hell even mainstream magazines (PCGamer UK is one example I can think of) have dedicated multiple page articles to just how much GFWL sucks. So why choose to use it? Just seems bizarre.

I just had the fight with Dr.Freeze. It was most excellent, I was really starting to panic when all the obvious options were drained.
• lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
I wanted that fight to last longer. I was in mostly the same situation as you, except I had bumbled across one or two of the less obvious options. So I started looking around in earnest, and began spotting even more possibilities. But the fight was over before I could try many of them. :(

I screwed up one of the "explode this wall when he passes by" by putting the explosive on the wrong side and after that I was completely clueless and he only needed one more round of punches. Out of pure lunacy I tried the zipline and lo and behold it somehow counted and I finally got him !

The things I found:

Silent takedown (after destroying his ice sculptures which he stood and rebuilt like a silly person)
Hide below takedown
Disable gun
Electrify water
Explode walls over him
Explode floor over him
Magnetize coils as he passes by
Above mentioned zipline which felt a bit derp

Now im looking for his wife in the industrial area but I can't find anything in the marked area, it's pretty huge.

Hint for the wife: She's inside a building that has to be accessed through a "backdoor" of sorts. Look for a building right next to the water, the backdoor is right by the water on the north side.

I knew it! That place was oddly suspicious, not having a riddler questionmark inside it or anything. I did manage to find it between posting and reading your post though, I kept looking for a raft you had to drag around but ofc it was just a simple use of a gadget.

I had the fight with the Joker some time ago, tough as hell with those buggy hitbox cars :/ (also playing on Hard). Should had gotten powergadgets upgrade earlier.

Nope (you are forcing my hand for a replay or youtube of it now), and neither did I when I had to pick the right hostage strapped furnace.. on a riddler sidequest.

"This will be easy. Yes, yes I saw where he went"
"Now...CHOOSE batman!" -riddler

>"Die" and get to try again
"Well goddammit this was bull######"
"HOW DID YOU DO THAT? You must have cheated!" -riddler
"No you!"
