Biggest issues with NS my opinion

-[420]-Papageorgio-[420]-Papageorgio Join Date: 2011-09-23 Member: 122961Members

Major things to work on
After spending a hundred or so hours playing the beta here is my opinion of the biggest issues that are currently keeping people from playing or wanting to play.

Issue #1 Black screen....no need to go any further into detail.

Issue #2 Forever alien evolve screen, which doesnt go away unless you completely quit the game. Very annoying especially if you just waited so many minutes to go fade and now you have to restart the game and lose all of your res.

Issue #3 Server crashing after round end. Most of the time the server never repopulates because people are so frustrated ect....

Issue #4 Egg bug. If I am correct each egg is assigned to a player when it spawns. Therfor if you have an alien or alien(s) afk that are currently dead and not clicking to spawn then the eggs get held up and no one can spawn.

Issue#5 Stalemates The Shade has helped out this issue by being able to cloak and kill game ending structures such as marine start power node or com chair, but it still is not enough. Especially considering that the majority of players are still noob. I know that this is going to be an ongoing issue until more features are released like onos, jetpacks, exosuit, ect.

Issue#6 Low fps as result of ongoing gameplay and no server restart. In my opinion, this is the biggest problem as of right now. The servers go to ###### after 3 normal rounds or so of gameplay. I'm not sure if it is a mem leak or what, but it really needs to be fixed. The game becomes almost unplayable for your average CPU. As aliens you can wing it, but as marines you are pretty much a walking corpse. Trying to fire at a skulk going 9k miles per hour at 5fps just isnt feasible.

Sure. I'm a die hard ns fan and played ns1 since the day it came out. I'll start posting more and contributing what I can to the progress of ns2. The game is already incredible and I can't wait to get the full experience when its all said and done.

All of those except #5 are fixed in 186 FYI. Give UWE a break, they have done an amazing amount of work for 186, hence the reason why 186 has more Delivered features/bug fixes than any that we've seen so far.

Be patient, 186 is close my friends :D

We are patiently waiting. My intent was not to bash UWE. I think everyone is doing a superb job. I was just stating the biggest problems in my opinion, and if fixed I think they will really give a boost to player population and pre-orders.

Glad to hear that all but one of the big issues are fixed though. Thanks for the reply.

Did you get that in 184? if yes, then you have a good chance to have it again in 186, since the performance regression of 185 is mostly fixed.

Jeah, modern fps games are developed with a 30 or 60 fps target in mind. So anything between 30 and 60 is the 2011 standard.
  • konatakonata Join Date: 2011-08-24 Member: 118296Members
60FPS is deemed "acceptable" as an industry standard. That's called a minimum, unless you lock it to 30 then you're either stupid or only aiming at console players, in which there are other forces at work.

As a consumer, anyone who accepts the minimum loses out. So "30 to 60" for a PC game is horse ######. 60 is a minimum and we don't even get that constant, as far as consumer expectation of a good model of 100 which is and always has been the target for developers to enable their PC gaming communities to play, it's a long way off.

The game will get there Kotana. Be patient. 1 Man doing all the NS2 engine work and tools can only do so much, compared to large teams of engine programmers in the PC games you suggest.

60 FPS is acceptable for interactive movies.

Instead you should try to watch the progress of the game, I can suggest bookmarking this page:

Lol, I really enjoy reading posts from konata... What game company do you work for that makes their beta models run on 100fps? Not even Diablo 3 runs at a constant 100fps, do you see the beta testers complaining about that? No, they are spending time contributing to the beta program, not bashing the game company in almost every one of their posts.

You have to relax my friend...

Excuse me..and I mean this in the nicest way possible (I really do), but could we all please please stop going on an aggressive nomnom spree every single time someone voices their concerns - Its starting to become a little absurd.
Now I will grant you that some posts are genuinely unhelpful and spew all kinds of sorted bile and contemptible nonsense that just needs to be set fire to in a jet engine while the person is in a purple dinosaur outfit with a major invasive object up their proverbial behind. I'm really with you on that one (No seriously)- But really, it shouldn't actually be like this with a person like the OP.

He raises valid points and even makes sure to underline that this is how he views thing, carefully avoiding to assert anything definitive, based entirely on observation and perhaps even careful thinking - He even states it in a fairly non-hostile way that should invite thinking, not flaming. Like him, I am particularly worried about NS2 and want the best for it, but also like him I often find myself try out the latest patch when it arrives, give it a go and then discover either that certain critical issues are still present, or that some part of the balancing of the game makes it entirely uninteresting to even play.
I still have plenty of faith in UWE despite my concerns by the way.

Now it is all well and good that issues are present, nobody is perfect and especially with game development. Killing off issues take a great deal of time..and I understand that and so does the OP I think. Nobody is faulting UWE their development speed nor methodology(at least the ones with a bit of sense and understanding of the whole process) nor is anyone ranting and raving like a madman (At least nobody worth listening to). But - Some people, like the OP, are casually stating issues as they see it and giving, what can only be described as, normal feedback. The very least you can do, as a regular reader, is to consider what is being said..carefully..Maybe he has a point, it certainly agrees (to some extent at least) with statistics and trends. However he might not have a point, and if you have a better explanation, or simply have good reason to think otherwise - Saying so in a friendly, or at least neutral, way without jumping down his throat will be much more useful to everyone involved, including you.

    Thank you.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks for backing me up. I check the progress and dev tracker very often. I knew that these issues were already being worked on. As the title of my post, I was stating the biggest issues in my opinion that needed to big fixed in order to up the player count and pre-orders.

It is just sad to log in at peak hours and find no one playing. I know this is BETA, but I consider the current game state to be very fun and enjoyable besides the major bugs I stated in my post. When most of those bugs are fixed in the next patch, I think you will see a huge jump in pre-orders and server population. I don't think the game will die down as quickly as it did this patch because of the annoyance factor that came along with many of the new bugs.

Pretty much what I'm trying to say is I could care less about sound roll offs, cysts playing idle sounds, dead players giving LOS ect. What really makes the game un-enjoyable is not being able to play it properly. Like the forever alien evolve screen and having to completely restart ns. Not being able to spawn as an alien because of egg bug and the other 4 things I stated in this post.
