<div class="IPBDescription">Don't know if this is old or not, but...</div><strike>While messing around on the Loveshack waiting for people to join, I found a way to get into some of the Summit vents that you normally can't reach as a Gorge. It's not a map-specific technique either. I don't know if it's a bug, a feature, or both, but if you have a Hydra (or more) to spare, you can get yourself into quite a lot of places as a Gorge.

Personally, I like it. It reminds me of TF2 dispenser-jumping. It might be a bit of a bug on Summit though, because it lets you spread infestation directly from Vent approach into Flight Control without going through Crossroads or Crevice.</strike>

Well, looks like this isn't new. Thanks as always to TrC for making the issue more complicated than it needed to be, and I guess that's a wrap.

Massive exploiting, video off before it comes mainstream

Certainly not! This is the Beta; it's our job to find bugs like these and expose them. Sweeping it under the rug wouldn't fix anything, and would create an imbalance between people who know about it and people who don't.

Either this will be worked in as a feature or removed as a glitch. If it's an acceptable tactic people should know about it; if it's a glitch, we need to know to be on the lookout for it, and we need to know that it needs fixing.
    <i>
Edit: I wouldn't call it "massive" exploiting either, personally. I'm not noclipping through the map and eating marines from inside the wall, I'm just spending personal resources and a little bit of creativity to open up a new growth path from point A to point B. It only works one way since Gorges can't climb vent shafts, and in most vents, placing a cyst clogs it up too much for you to use the route a second time.</i>

In NS1 gorges used chambers to get into vents all the time.

I've never seen a Gorge using hydras to get in vents in NS2, though. Is it common practice?

what you've shown us here is a 9 years old tactic

Now see, if this was the first reply to this thread, there would have been a lot less confusion.

Is it common use in NS2, though? Because as I've mentioned, I've never seen a Hydras used for this in any of my games so far.

    Nah normally you use cysts.

It is a practic way to get higher levels, like at Alienstart at the wall above the entrance from reactor on Summit, to place Hydras out of GL AoE.

Btw "stacking" was a common tactic in NS1 to reach vents or blocking Lifts.

Thank you for the polite and informative post. I guess I've just never noticed or never run into chamber stacking before; now I know!

I'd delete this thread if I could find a button for it...

It's a great technique for placing hydras where GLs can't reach them. I've done it before at the entrances to reactor and crevice, and it works like a charm.

I really hope this ability stays in the game. Sure it's a bit buggy, but it makes sense.

I've done this kind of thing before, but into reactor core in summit.

The thing I didn't like is that I couldn't spit or bile bomb out of the vent i was at >:

it'd make gorges alot more useful if they could, not sure if it was just the vent i was at that wouldn't let me do it,or what, but it was annoying .

That’s a common NS strategy. I used it a lot as gorge in NS. Also there were mine ladders for the marines. I don’t think it’s an exploit or a bug. With the unreal jump ability of the HL1 engine some seemingly amazing things could be done. I wouldn’t like to see that.

You didn't happen to see my Shade in the vent did you?! Of course you didn't! There is no Shade! Ha... ha...

    Go play somewhere else now...

Oh if only you could build chambers in vents reliably, I still hope for the mini-chambers in PT becoming a standard thing.
  • PapayasPapayas Join Date: 2010-07-01 Member: 72219Members
They could actually make this into an official feature but change it slightly.

They should allow the gorge to place BIG splodges of infestation (Not cysts) that they can climb onto to allow them to get into vents.

These splodges could be used as blockades and all sorts and as a bonus it wouldn't look stupid!
