Made a crappy photoshop version, could be done better ofc, but shorter barrel really looks better => so hope that the real thing is something inbetween.

so much better and I agree with the reasoning. Really can see much more on screen now. Looks a little more deadly :)

The FP visibility is great. Slimming it down is refreshing; however the lack of a trigger guard makes me squirm on the inside.

I get this mental image of marines tripping over skulks and having their fingers slip on to the trigger spewing rounds in to Sgt. Benson and Andrews sealing the Frontiersman's fate.

It sort of reminds me of a paintball marker with that "Fang" trigger, but again a trigger guard would help seal the deal.

Friendly fire isn't! So says Murphy!

I want to place a flash suppressor at the end of that long barrel. Will the Grenade Lawnchair be reworked too? It seemed too flimsy to have a 'kick' when you fired it.

Kouji, never share a foxhole with anyone braver then you. Oh and if your short on everything except combat, your in battle :P

I think it looks great guys well done, i like the sleeker and tighter design that gives the impression that it's easier to control in tight quarters.
Also i really like the extended barrel, reminds me of the rifles used in Starship troopers the movie.

Kudos, can't wait to give it a test drive.

    Much better :)

I never liked the original, was hoping you guys would revise it before 1.0

It does make it look a bit off in the profile, but first and foremost my concern is with how it looks in the FP view. However, we purposely added the extra length to the thinner cylinder part of the barrel, rather then the tip, so that we could slide the whole barrel back inside the front section more, on the 3rd person version of the rifle and versions that we use in cinematics. These renders were taken before doing that, though, so the barrel is longer then it is meant to be.

Good to know, thanks for the feedback to our posts :D. Love how you guys respond one on one to concerns and comments, not many companies do this!

For my taste, this still doesn't much look like the future of fire arms technology.
Assault rifles tend to get more and more plastic-ky each generation.

    See for yourself:
The name giver of all "assault rifles":
    <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/47/Sturmgewehr_44.jpg/800px-Sturmgewehr_44.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    Metal & Wood

Quickly followed by the famous AK-47, the American M16 and so on and so on...

Modern assault rifles like the G36 are almost all polymer (where possible to reduce weight and improve usability under harsh climatic conditions - at the end of the day RELIABILITY is the number#1 quality you want in a rifle - because you don't want any failures when your life may depend on it)

Well, and then we have one of the latest:
    <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d1/Xm8_sideview.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The XM8 - see any shiny metal parts on it?
The only thing missing is a pink finish and a Barbie™ sticker on it, because it looks so toy-like and plastic.
Design-wise it can hardly be any rounder.

    ...and that's the future.

    <a href="http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/825/riflereworkrender01.jpg/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/7954/riflereworkrender01.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

In your first assault rifle iteration you could see open wires and circuits on the optic sights... I think that's fine for a prototype, but I wouldn't want to drop that kind of exposed hi-tech in the mud... it looks like it will break during the first 5 minutes in a campaign on a planet with deserts (--> sandstorms!) or a jungle environment (drop it in the muddy waters and that's it...)
Seriously, if I was a Frontiersman, I wouldn't want to be issued a rifle that looks like the manufacturer was too lazy to finish the delicate electronic parts and left them unshielded and open...

Interesting. But I'd figure the same reason the rifles seem unreliable is the same reason why marines don't wear butt armour. We're real men.

The reality is most military equipment is supplied by the lowest bidder so a Frontiersman would expect those kinds of flaws.

Also grittiness. The tech in NS is this sort of mix of steaming rusted pipes and sci-fi computer monitors, so a gun without lots of bare metal would never fit.

Yeah bare metal fits better with the gritty, partially cyberpunk theme of the game

To be fair: since every gun has to be molded on-site out of nanosludge, which is a finitely accessible resource, and since each gun is likely to last all of 2 minutes before being eaten by an alien, spending vital materials on longevity-extending components like wire-shielding and plastic covering is a waste of resources. The guns look sort of like "thrown together" pieces of technology because that's what they are; they're not expected to survive for very long in the field, and there's enough cheap, re-usable, on-site nanotech (that doesn't have to be made from scratch each time a new weapon is formed) in the standard frontiersman (and his surrounding environment) to easily deal with something as mundane as a clogged barrel.

Or at least, that's what I think.

All of which is invalidated by SPACE NANITES

I want cool guns, guns that are shiny, guns that make cool noises, guns that have lots of moving parts, guns that go click clackety click when you take them out and make woo woo noises when you reload them.

Basically the coolest gun ever was the toy laser gun with the light up parts and the selection of different midi firing sounds that ran on about 0.5kg of batteries I got when I was a kid. Everything else is wrong.

    Really.

It's a computer game. It's based around aliens. Realism isn't what's going on here. All you gun enthusiasts should just nod and smile.

It doesn't look utterly ridiculous and implausible. Less of the "Oh it has wires, oh it looks cheap and like it would break". I don't think anyone really cares that much when they're playing. If you do though, you might want to sort your priorities where the rest of the game may lay.

Oh, that would introduce everyone's favourite equipment malfunctions: Weapon jams and grenade duds. Maybe also some overheating barrels and duds-exploding in the marines' faces.

Seriously. If earth has dragged on till unity due to alien threat - it is quite reasonable to expect that they fought among themselves up to that point.
You wouldn't hand the advantage/victory over to your enemy on a silver plate as big as a football field if you equipped your soldiers with that kind of crap...

If you aim to lose the battle against the kharaa, you could as well go in with your axes (and let's just hope your rule of "lowest bidder" doesn't apply again...)

    - "the kharaa eat the marines' wepons"
What else? Do they also devour their dreams?

    - "spending vital materials on longevity-extending components [...] is a waste of resources"
Let's re-imagine the famous 'Marines are about to enter the Alien Hive' scene, shall we?
Sgt: Sry guys, we just got confirmation that your rifles won't work, because of the humid air in the hive. Fight them with your fingernails, will ya?

Or the kharaa might enter a jungle planet:
Sgt: Sry guys, we just got confirmation that your rifles won't work in the rain. Fight them with nasty insults, will ya?

Or the kharaa might invade a desert planet with lots of storms
Sgt: Sry guys, we just got confirmation that your rifles won't work in this climate, because dust may enter anytime, even if you don't drop your rifle, which will ###### up all good intententions of shooting them at safe distances. So let's leave this planet to them and when they arrive on Earth let's just hope we have to fight them in the Cleanroom of a CPU factory next time... because that's about the only place where your lowest bidder military industry scam products will work

realism is <!--coloro:#FFA500--><span style="color:#FFA500"><!--/coloro-->please don't evade the swear filter<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->, its their game, in an alternative made up universe, they can do whatever the hell they want.

You dont even need to argument your stuff because of that, malfunctions because of exposed wires to water? who says electricity works the same in this alternative universe.
The same can be said about anything else.

Also, not every weapon with a bolt jams, we have lots of weapons that are designed to be durable in any situation, even in this universe, let alone a completely DIFFERENT one.
