First Impressions

Ok, so, I played a ton of NS1 back in the day (check my join date! :P ), and I pre-ordered NS2 on the first day possible.

I'm just now getting around to trying it out, and here are my impressions so far:

1. Servers. Are there really so few servers? I only ever see about 3-4 that even have any players, and they, of course, are the ones that have 150+ ping for me :(

2. Performance. I have yet to get through an entire round of play. I either crash to desktop, or there is a timeout with the server (server crash?)

I'm very new to NS2, so I may be missing something here. Is the game really this unstable at the moment or is it just my setup? Are there more servers that the in-game browser aren't showing? I am aware that the game is in Beta, but it's a bit discouraging nonetheless.

I just thought I'd share a little "newbie" feedback, because first impressions (even beta impressions) are important.

I think something is wrong on your end, im playing round after round on all kinds of servers without disconnects or crashes.

There really are so few populated servers.

If you're timing out, chances are that the server indeed has crashed, which sporadically happens.

Crash-to-Desktops have been occurring for me (and probably most of everyone else) since the very first Alpha-build. So while it's always wise to verify the stability of your hardware, NS2 is inherently unstable and crash-prone.

the amount of crashes are decreasing. actually the current build (177) you can call playable. its really improved compared to previous builds

This build has never crashed for me. I do get timed out when servers crash though.

The amount of people playing, has a lot to do with what time you're looking.
Obviously it's a time zone thing, but there are also the fact that more will be around just after a new patch.
So check again just after 178 and you will most likely find a lot of active servers.

Ping doesn't really seem to affect me that much. I was playing on the Australia Pure server with about 300 ping and the game seem to go as it usually does. Just ignore the server ping at the moment and just join a server that has players.
