Seeing the own shadow

ShiloriusShilorius Join Date: 2011-01-14 Member: 77445Members, Reinforced - Shadow
<div class="IPBDescription">what do you think?</div>I noticed since I started playing (125 hours ago) that everybody and everything casts a shadow - exept the player self.

If you run around in front of a floodlight everybody else sees your shadow and is aware of your presence. Youself don't see It and thus are not able to hide it, or so.
Sometimes I get the feeling I am just a Hand with Gun (or teeth) flying around in the map with no body attached.

With this said, what do you think?

Would it add to the game to cast a shadow as a player, or would it distract you?

I suspect it would be incredibly buggy and/or disorienting... but I would like it in, yeah.

If it barely costs any extra resources, sure.

Dynamic engine is dynamic, although the current shadows are fading way to fast (performance issue with the engine perhaps for now?)

Well I tried setting them to longer range and I was in a war situation with my pc. I'm now discussing peace with it, however it's demands are preposterous :/

HOLY POKE IN A PIZZA BOX YES !!!
i get this feeling in every game and its even worth to get it in such an emersive, awesome game..
i want to see my feet ... just so i can say hi to them once a while..
and own shadow? YES ! this isnt just some gimmick.. its tactical ###### !"
if you want to ambush as a skulk you have to hide your shadow.. and what helps it to turn of your flashlight as marine when they get you by your shadow around the corner ?
also.. everyone else sees your shadow so there shouldnt be ANY bugs with you seeing it yourself

    Hell yeah!

This idea, and the animated lower torso+legs+feet for marines would be amazing

as long as it's optional also.

I think our best bet is to continue to argue about it for 8 pages. That usually gets UWEs attention :)

Seriously though, they've built an engine that touts it's dynamic lighting abilities, utilize the hell out of it!

Well, the most obvious way of getting shadows of yourself in the game in would be to render your own model and not just the teeth and claws (for skulk), and yeah there are problems with that...
But that's the naive way of doing it, and I'm sure Max or Charlie can think of something more cleverer.

solution: ability to toggle the ability to toggle self shadowing.

If you set the light radius further on point/spot lights and then change the other values accordingly to get the light affect you want, it's barely any strain on the engine.

If every object already casts a dynamic shadow and light, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to see your own.

That could get problematic for skulks, with wallrunning and stuff.

    But i still agree!

Coming to think of it, one thing I *hate* in TF2 is how your shadow can clip walls slightly and bug around when on stairs and or above someone but you NEVER know yourself! This is dead giveaway for enemies to know you are coming, this idea could make you be a bit more careful if you know your shadow is cast on the opposite wall or such.

Well, we should already be able to see our special edition armour on the arms that are holding our weapons...

I think an important question is if we see our own feet/legs, does it require a separate first person view model, or does it simply "activate" the eyes to see the current model? Since so few games actually does allow you to see your own legs I imagine there's some kind of problem with it.

Seeing one's body is debatable but seeing one's own shadow is a must.

I should see if they could see my shadow. And it's weird going down that gully section of rockdown and seeing people's shadow from the spotlight but when you go across you think you're a vampire.

Technical issues aside, if shadows are gameplay-critical to the point where enemies will ambush based on the position of your shadow then yes, you should see your own shadow.

Watch the final 5 minutes of the film "Heat" for a perfect example of shadows giving someone a combat advantage!

I'm all in for the seeing your feet/legs, alá Crysis etc.
Would be cool when you look down at the skulk chewing on your legs!
Seeing your own shadow is a must!

Hmm, does skulks cast shadows on the ground if they are climbing over a light source on the roof? ANOTHER reason to see your own shadow, so you can ambush without being captain obvious.

I'd rather like to see my shadow, so that I don't give away any ambushes.
