Sounds, Models, Tracers
Topic is pretty self-explanatory. Weapon 1, 2, and 3 being "exactly the same but does more damage" is a little too old school.
In an ideal world, changing the weapon model for each marine weapon tech upgrade would make the best distinction.
In a world with limited time and budget, changing weapon sounds, tracer colors, flame color, etc could be a faster and easier way to provide this distinction.
For armor, nothing other than a model and viewmodel upgrade really fit the bill.
Why do this:
It exposes the strategy element of the game. Players, even new players, will know when they are in the late game and missing weapon upgrades, being aware of a possible tactical mistake. Upgraded weapons in the early game will be noticed too as players bring lvl 2 weapons to bear on Skulks and Lerks. Aliens will also be aware of weapon and armor upgrades.
This makes the game more new-player friendly, and makes weapon and armor upgrades a lot more satisfying.
An extension of this is to change weapon upgrades to be more or different than just "does more damage". Make rifle-butts harder, flame thrower ammo consumption lower, shotgun more accurate at range, improved pistol reload speed, etc.
