I was hoping I could download the maps just by connecting, but okay.

I'm going out on an assumptive limb here, but because currently the editor does not have a compiling system for creating a map file that is unable to be opened and altered in the editor, this particular feature doesn't exist. (publically at least, i'm assuming it already exists in house and the test maps will be untouchable)
Essentially giving your map out to people at this point is giving them free reign of editing of your map, which some people may not be okay with for privacy, etc.
Comprox, could you clarify this a bit if you know?

Doubtful, unless Steamworks immediately integrates it. However SteamChat has VOIP, just create a chatroom and invite people you are playing with.

This is correct for now, but may change in the future. They are hoping to add some kind of sv_download thing in the future though.

They should look into integrating Teamspeak 3 SDK. I don't know what the licensing costs are though. http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=teamspeak3sdk

Great idea making the Pre-Alpha/Engine Test integrated into Steamworks. It will help us spread the good word about your amazing game. It will hopefully be similar to when people place "Starcraft 2 Beta" in their Steam Library. That is to say, people will message and get curious. It will be free advertising that will help spread the word around and have all of our Steam Friends ask questions about the game.
I've done it before with other games, especially ones people have never heard of and it works. It gets them involved and hopefully gets them playing future releases.
As far as the Engine Testing actually goes, can we get some standard form of Bug Submission or Reporting Format? I am sure you are interested in seeing all of our DXDiagnostics and a formal write up of anything we encountered (ie. bugs, impressions, comments).

I'd assume they are going to do a mass e-mail, but it hasn't been confirmed. Keep refreshing the main site to find out. But I wouldn't expect it for around another 5 hours.

I think this game will take off well when its fully released. It was ground breaking years ago and im sure this version is gonna rock the socks off that. I remember when i first played it and i couldnt get my head round the fact that the commander was a player what a wicked idea though. I have to admit I usually always go marine so hope the marines kick ass in the new version and we should geta little taster of marine in the test is that right? :P
