Did a bunch of combat servers shut down or something? The general attitude on ns maps has been pretty poor lately. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
no I haven't lol, atleast not in Europe, I've been getting a bit of grief over in americaland :o
@ attitude on ns maps.
I think the attitude stems from the various player types on the small remaining servers. Good Players + Noobs = Poor Attitude. I sometimes find it frustrating when playing with some players. It's not the new ones, but the players that don't want to learn. NS is a game that requires a lot of communication and if you can't communicate your team is at a severe disadvantage. I have come in contact with players that don't respond to Voice or Text, which is very frustrating. I can understand not being able to speak English, but if they see or hear their name they should respond with a quick "No English" or a blurb in the own language. I rarely think this is the case since you can usually tell by the bigger ping. It completely alludes me why someone would ignore their whole team on purpose. This is part where I usually have a "bad attitude". It's 2009, people should have invested into a mic by now or learn to read the text while playing.
I've asked multiple times in servers why people 1: see a need to act in this manner at all, and 2: why others simply ignore or even reward this behavior. Outside of the usual racial comments, your mama, learn2haveskillz responses I expect, the few sincere ones don't really have an answer. It's usually "pro players act like this, nothing you can do".
I know the internet and online gaming gives a reasonable sense of anonymity, and maybe it's the caliber of people that claim to fall into said "pro" mindset, but I am truly at a loss for the attitudes and play styles of some people in NS.
Inasmuch as I enjoy playing on servers with skilled players, I find myself more and more looking for servers that I may know will have a horribly frustrating gameplay, but at least where people harbor SOME respect for one another. When I am on the "pro" servers, I've taken to just silently playing and doing my best, and ignoring/muting the rest. However, I feel it is slowly pulling me away again from NS.
I'd love to hear from server admins as to why they think this class of player is so needed they are willing to sacrifice fun and decency for their involvement.
Your characterization aside, there are a few reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

There aren't enough players left that they can kick lots of people still playing(main reason)

They want the challenge

They want to play with knowledgeable players

This is not to say there are not knowledgeable casual players, just that these players are usually not "in practice" and few in number.
If you think NS be hostile, scrim CS.
To be honest, I think it's the combination of higher status and the Internet. I've seen very similar terrible manners from public players when somebody doesn't play siege007 their way or when they get enough of xp lead in co to mow down the rest of the server.
The Internet makes people bad mannered, not necessarily the gaming habits themselves.

Well, not to say all hardcore players are jerks, but they seem to much more highly compose of obsessives and social rejects. Especially since alot of them are similarly attracted to ebaums world and SA and what not these days. Places that promote anonymous socially defunct humor.
If someone is Bawing about raging however, stick your head in it. Rage is one of the classic staples of NS. RAAAGGGGEEEE
I wouldn't waste time with expectations.
