For once, Australia gets something first.
Long story short, EBgames Australia is selling spore early, for some reason.

Happy days.

I rang up EB in the city this morning and reserved the last two copies there. I then enlisted my ladyfriend to rush in and pick them up. I just got home from work and I'm installing it now. I'll report back soon with my findings. She's been playing it for a few hours now and is enjoying it muchly.

Wahee! It's pretty awesome. I just started the tribal phase.

Make sure you play through each phase on hard. It'll take a bit longer, but the transitions between the phases is SO MUCH AWESOME when you finish them on hard.

My race of xenocidal flying ants is doing well so far.

How does a transition get more awesome on hard? Does it have fireworks? Are there MORE fireworks on hard? Do they dance for you? What happens D:

Maybe I should just wait patiently for my own copy.

Meh now I have to go to the store, why doesn't EA see the power of Steam!

If it was on Steam, it wouldn't be out right now because that would probably lead to happy happy lawsuit time. 'sides, EA want to promote their (vastly inferior) EA Store, so they're not going to sell games through their competitor's system.

What I meant was, the power of Steam >∞ EA store.

What does this 6 month deal mean on EA store anyways... That I have to extend the licence for the game each 6 month by paying them? What a load of crap...

No, you have unlimited (IIRC) downloads with in a 6 month period, you must pay them $5 if you want to download it after that.

Unfortunately I can't remember if you can burn the file to a disk or not.

Either way, EA is scum for that one as the other DD companies I know give you unlimited downloads for the life of the company, and you can generally burn the file to disk (Direct2Drive does it this way, Steam obviously does it this way, etc etc)

the intensity of your posts is amplified by the shouting scout next to them, which makes it very hard to suppress LOL'ing at work.

    or is that L'ing OL?

anyway, I didn't even realize the spore release was nigh. Spore was kind of in Duke Nukem Forever status for me. Hard to believe it's actually upon us. I must purchase.

I hate flying ants in real life so that idea just creeps me out.

I'm going to make a giant boot race that loves everyone except flying ants.

I've played the game for a short while, and it basically comes down to: eat others, have sex, evolve <naughty word for poop>, repeat and all that until you fly in a spaceship.

    I like it.

So, about how long is one phase of the game? How long did it take for you to get to the space phase, or whatev.?

    I guess there's no point in postponing the inevitable. I just might buy Spore tonight <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I just hit the space age now, after about six hours of playtime.

There's a huge amount of stuff to do once you're in space, I haven't begun to scratch the surface.

I now have Spore. I am at the tribal stage and am getting gang raped by three tribes at once every time I play.

I CAN'T FIGHT OFF THREE ARMED TRIBES WITH MARRACAS! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!

I lasted only a mere four hours before uninstalling.

IGN's video review is an extremely accurate account of the gameplay.

Don't buy Spore because you want to have fun playing with your creatures. Buy Spore because you want to create and then share your creatures.

Almost all stages (I didn't make it into space, got too bored, but I've heard Space was actually the worst) are dumbed down so ridiculously so that the game actually becomes a boring grind devoid of any fun. The only things I disagree with on the IGN review is the replayability and the over-all high score. I would have given it a 7.0.

Hmm, I think I like the space stage the least... for some reason. I think because it takes too long to get all the toys -_^

I want to obliterate my foes with deadly-deadly volcanoes >:|

(The tide-pool phase is pretty fun, I would have really liked it if you could customize your little.. bug.. thingy some more. (Shape/items)

Like that IGN review says, spore is a very impressive piece of work, it's just not a particularly great game.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Space age is boring. Can't quite nail down why, but it seems like my strength, social interaction, has somehow become irrelevant. I can draw crop circles for villagers, which does absolutely nothing. Whoop-de-######ing-doo. I can talk to other spacefarers, but that seems like a generic option available to everyone. Also, the game has pulled the old Civilization routine of a "neutral" race meaning "we'll demand outrageous sums from you every five minutes and throw a huge tantrum and threaten war when you refuse."
Terraforming is fussy and requires lots of money that I don't have. In fact, I just can't seem to get a good economy going. MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS to buy a star system? That's never going to happen.

Two games I was really looking forward to, Spore and Stalker: Clear Sky came out this week. Both of them have been reviewed as "dissapointing".

    This makes me sad.
