Wasn't that done shoddily though? Haven't looked into it, since I'm not interested, but that's what I heard.

Well, Valve does like to include community efforts into their games. So they are in there by default instead of having to download plugins and what not.

Survival patch/expansion/what have you is now confirmed to be free for both 360 and PC.

Source: Swedish site who didn't provide a link to the official source but I have no doubt it's true.

This may just be language that the console gamers understand, but normally we'd call this a "patch" or an "update." "Downloadable content" sounds like something you pay for. And I'm not paying for this.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->DLC is a term used fairly frequently in the industry, but it's true it's used primarily for console updates/patches.

I think it's been invented as a 'nicer'-sounding alternative to 'patch', which is something you might do to your trousers when they get holes at the knees. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

the difference, i'm sure, is that this, for the xbox, will not be a patch that gets installed automatically, but instead is something to get off the marketplace but will be listed as free. i believe there was a similar thing for rainbow 6

Which is why I suggest "update" for content and "patch" for fixes.

Well yes, but they are already calling patches updates. So what do you expect the industry to do? Revert this perversion of words back to its intended meaning.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Last weekend, Valve decided to do an experiment with Left 4 Dead. Last weekend's sale resulted in a 3000% increase over relatively flat numbers. It sold more last weekend than when it launched the game. WOW. That is unheard of in this industry. Valve beat its launch sales. Also, it snagged a 1600% increase in new customers to Steam over the baseline.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I just have trouble imagining the kind of person who would want to buy L4D but hadn't installed Steam until about a week ago.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
"Dude, remember you said L4D is too expensive? It's 75% off right now! You should get it man, we'll shoot zombies some time!" It's probably that kind of person. Heard of it from his friends maybe, but decided the price wasn't worth it.

Played with 3 guys for whom this was exactly the case. The third guy had just bought the game and his 2 friends who had convinced him to buy it were showing him the ropes.
