Ammo

A veeeeery long time ago, I once was gonna make a mod, a year before HL2 was released. We had a small team, a lot of ideas, but a lack of concept artists and coders, so it died unfortunatly.

Unfortunatly, I lost much of the gameplay ideas we had, but I'll try to find them in our chat logs and hopefully I can share some with you

Here's one I remember tho:

First of all, when looking at the marine concepts, they still have that belt with all kings of pockets
Will these be used for ammo stocking?

It would be so sweet to actually see another player throw away an empty mag (with physics), taking a new one from a pocket and put it in his weapon, all animated smoothly

Also, i think it should be possible to throw both empty and full mags at any time
the empty ones would make a good distraction (ie throw it somewhere away from you so it makes noise and the aliens thinks you're there ... you know the deal hehe) and more importantly, the full mags could be very handy if you got a teammate who's running low on bullets and the comm has his hands full with spamming the base with turrents

This might take some extra control keys tho... maybe it gets a bit confusing then

Tell me what you think about this guys

I like it, any chance to help a fellow team mate out with an extra cartridge is a worthy endeavor.

HAHAHA Yeah... nothing reminds you that you are playing a game more then hearing all kind of sounds [reloading, walking, talking], and seeing a marine stand perfectly still! hehehehe So true. Even basic animations would be great-

Hmm...Doesn't sound too bad, but don't throw it too early.

The magazine throwing is MGS meets NS =\

Ive never liked the ammo sharing thing, it just doesnt end up happening...

as for throwing clips, not really sure how youd go about this, i suppose itd need its own attack key.

and what about shotguns, do you throw a shell?

hehe i can picture it now....

Buzzou throws grenade launcher ammo to team mate

    KABOOM!

teammate turns into a pink mist....

    LOL

you shouldn't ever really have to give ammo, the comm can supply

hmm throwing magazines around doesnt really sound like something professional marines would be doing. For onething its noisy, for another mags are usually reused, not thrown away.

Though i could more than understand a marine frantically throwing away a mag or thumbling it in the heat of battle. perhaps there should be two reload keys. One where you throw away the mag.. the plus being that you relaod quicker, the downside being that u have to throw away some ammo... unless of course the clip is actually completely empty.

alternatively have the marine only throw away the clip if it is empty. My main point is most marines would not throw away precious ammo... especially when countless aliens are crawling around.

A mod i was working on ages ago had an ammo system like above
The first clip is one that is actually in the gun - you can see that it its about 2/3 empty
The other 3 clips are on the players belt, but you can see how much ammo is in each clip

The players don't actually throw out the clips when they are empty or when they reload, they simply switch between clips, but pressing R multiple times to scroll, or by holding R and and using the mouse wheel to select.

of you can still get more ammo, buy going to an armoury and simply exchanging clips.

The main point of this was to get rid of what happens in most games when you reload you never lose the ammo that was in the rest of the clip - you have 100 bullets total in 5 clips which contain 20 bullets each, you shoot 1 bullet and hit reload. but instead of losing the entire clip of bullets (20) you only lose one, its as if magically the clip is refilled :S

so the above system was a more tense way of doing it.

In a survival situation the marines would do anything to get the job done, as for sharing ammo, why not? NS isnt counterstrike or anything 'usually' if you ask someone they will most likely toss you an extra one rather than bugging the comm, then again it is such a small thing to add that doesn't add a whole lot, i'd imagine most likely custom servers could have this however.

This is a great idea. But youd have to be able to drop fully empty clips, so you can get new ones from the commander.

Also, i like the idea of not actually being able to replenish ammo in clips,
for example if all your clips are half empty, you cant have a full clip anymore.
(unless you return to armory, or get dropped an ammo pack)

    also on schkorpios idea,

i think itd be good if ther wasnt a number count of bullets left in the gun.

should have to take a little guess

Why wouldnt TSA's marines of the future not have some wireless linkup to their guns to tell them how much ammo is left.

as if its possible? it CAN be done now, and NS2 takes place at least 100 to a couple hundred years in the future, the question is can they do it economically? I'd assume so they have nanites for god's sake.
