<div class="IPBDescription">Oooh, fun.</div>So, I just got done with my first big run through of like 20 games.
Ah, so THAT is where my Call of Duty has gone. Mmm...sexy.
So, the weapons are pretty balanced(though they all damage so hard that the 'damage' meter means nothing on the stats for a weapon), the perks are fun and cool(I'll explain them in a bit) and the customization is great.
...but the way you customize is my favorite part. How you get the extras- both the leveling system, and the "Challenge" system.
So, I'm level 6(out of a current beta max of 11 that will increase as the beta goes on). I got this level not just by kills, but by my entire team doing well(You get a good amount at the end of a round unless you got steamrolled). Levels at first give extra default classes(You start with Assault, Special Ops and Gunnerthing, then unlock Sniper and Demolitionist), then, the ability to create your own class(covered with perks), and then, weapons and weapon upgrades. Leveling up doesn't take too much(my first game I got 2 levels, but going from 5 to 6 took about 7 games), it seems toned just right.
Then, there are the "Challenges"(which you unlock at level 5). Challenges are smaller goals, that are much more focused- M16 Marksman Level 1 asks for 25 kills with the M16. Level 2 asks you to bring that to 75 kills, and so on and so forth. Marksman challenges reward you with nice accessories to weapons- my first for my M16 was a Red Dot Sight(I love her). M16 Expert asks for similar, with headshots, and rewards you with camo types for your weapon. And there are DOZENS of challenges(seperate from each challenge level)- each weapon has 2, and some have even more. Lots of fun.
Next is creating your own class(unlocked at level 4). This involves selecting a primary weapon, secondary(aka pistol), 1 type of special grenades, then, the real specialty, perks.
Perks set 1 has things that are focused on explosives- giving you an RPG, or C4, etc. If you have a weapon with a Grenade Launcher attachment, it takes this spot up as well.
Perks set 2 has to do with Health-related things- Juggernaut gives you more maximum health(CoD4 continues the regen system), another Perk(forgot the name) makes your shots do more damage and go further through walls(depending on the material, bullets may go through harder/easier), and then is a fun one(I think its called Martyrdom) that, when you die, you then fall on your back, and have a limited amount of time to shoot people with your pistol(til they finish you off).
Lastly, Perks 3 has the more 'miscellaneous' stuff- from better shooting from the hip, higher damage from explosives, or even having a longer sprint time.
Oh, and all 3 of the levels are neat/well designed. You've got the traditional "Middle Eastern Town where a Black Hawk has fallen down and can't get up", full of sneak shots and rooftop snipers, the abandoned Office Building that is a melee and shotgun playground with lots of straight edges and few real hiding spots, and then, the 'hardest' map, a huge outdoor map with tons of foliage(and the foliage actually matters- if someone is prone, they are hard to see. If they are prone, in a Ghillie suit, and not moving, you just won't see them at all. Camo that effin' works.
Oh, and just to note, the knife can both be average melee, but also you can do a lunge-hit that is good and brutal. Its tons of fun to use in general.
Lastly, is another ingame bit of "Ohnoes", on the subject of Kill Streaks.
3 kills in 1 life get you a UAV that acts as Enemy Radar.
5 Kills gets you an airstrike.
7 kills gets you a Helicopter flying around the map shooting people like hell. On the office map this is near useless(as is the airstrike),and the middle eastern map the Helicopter isn't much better(but Airstrikes work GREAT), but then on the sniper map, the Helicopter basically lets your team have control of the map.
Note that the Helicopter can be brought down by RPGs, as can the UAV by just shooting. The Helicopter will also go down from bullets in a relatively short amount of time.
Overall, I loved it, and once I let my blood settle I'm going back for more. It was a ton of fun, nice fast and frantic without being too stupid. A few annoying bugs(like sometimes no firing sound from enemies who are in line of sight but another room) remain, but the graphics are nice, the sound is good and the gameplay feels like the good ol' days(with added awesomeness).

Personally, I think the beta alone is coming together well, but there's still polish and balance to be done, especially on the weapons. LMGs seem a bit too accurate for their power and penetration, offset only by the horrendous reload time.
I love the weapon customization, though. Especially the silencer.

Aw. Well hopefully they'll have some type of appearance customization. I recall them mentioning it before.
Please tell me that this is not a console exclusive.

As far as I'm aware, it's being released on Windows, the 360 and the PS3.
Also: still doing it.
Yeah, but #3(though as bad as it was) was only on Consoles. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Oh, and as to LMGs being too accurate: I dunno, they seem fine to me. No more lethal than my assault rifles.
Not that ive ever played a COD game before; so i dont really know what im missing out on. This will be my first one, so its not like the hype is getting to me. Ive always heard COD was awesome (Well, not 3) but havent gotten around to trying it till now.
Quatnaut forgot to mention that you can shoot down the gunship helicopter. Also, it's best to save those UAVs until you get airstrike capability so you know exactly where the buggers are. BTW what's your gamer tag, Quatnaut?
There's nothing quite like carrying an LMG and having 'Deep Impact' and 'Stopping Power' this increased the damage done by your bullets, while allowing them to travel through certain walls. Like concrete if it's not to thick.
I just have to mention that the smoke grenades are the most beautiful looking as I've ever seen one. I seem to be the only one that uses them, mostly to cover my team or get from point A to Point B.
Back to domination matches; there's nothing quite like placing c4 on a flag then going to defend another using your rifle. The second the announcer says 'We're losing B!' all you do is triple tap the X button and kablooey. B is vacant and you're still guarding A. You just throw your second pack on A and go run and guard B with your rifle. Wash, rinse & repeat.
Character customization would be nice on this game, but it will fare well without it. As is, your character reflects the loadout you pick. You pick a sniper rifle you get a ghille. You pick C4 you get a Demo guy. So on, so forth, ad nausium.

How exactly does the chopper work? Does it just cruise around killing people for you? Or can you direct it?

Cruises around. It doesn't take instant shots- you've gotta be out in the open, and its easy to know when its out there(its VERY loud, and on top of that there is an icon of what part of the map its flying over, so you could be outside and just keep walls between you and it).
Also, personally PerfectionsFlaw, I think the C4 has to be pretty effin' overpowered. Not because you get killed by it in situations like you described, but because you could basically treat it like a super grenade that has no range- throw one out, get behind something BOOM, every last person nearby its dead. It should have a setting timer, so you have to set it up instead of that instant ######.
And my Gamertag(Feel free to add me folks, if I decline send me a message saying your NS forums name, but I'll try and accept all of them this week or two):
<a href="http://live.xbox.com/member/Quaunaut" target="_blank">http://live.xbox.com/member/Quaunaut</a>
Also, you can always just shoot the C4 pack causing it to prematurely detonate and possible kill the man who placed it.
While you can use an RPG to shoot down a Helo you can also just pick up an LMG and go at it for about 100 rounds. I find it's just as effective, just more accurate. Only downside is you have to hold the damed trigger which gives away your position to everyone on the friggn map.
Oh yeah, if you hate C4 you will absolutely loathe the claymores when they come out.
I thought it was...?
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->One innovation that's been retained from recent Call of Duty games is the lack of a traditional health bar. It's a trend several shooters have adopted, and one we're in favor of: rather than scavenging first aid kits to replenish your health, you'll see increasingly dense splatters of blood if you're taking damage, signaling for you to take cover. In this way, the action never stops: you can retreat for a few seconds if you get in trouble and come right back out shooting.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK_K5sevbYY" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK_K5sevbYY</a>
It would appear to be the same health as in Call of Duty 2 and 3, unfortunately.
I don't think Halo allows you to customize your character class with different weapons, weapon upgrades, and abilities after you reach a certain level. Or even lets you shoot through walls. Or go prone.
Its pretty close, gameplay wise. Except the hip shooting isn't as intelligently done(aka, if you don't have steady aim you're a bloody idiot if shooting from the hip. And if you DO have it, you're still pretty stupid).

Fair enough. I'm guessing he just thought it was like Halo because you regenerate health or something (but you also regenerate health in Vegas...). Well, whatever. Until I get a PC able to run something besides Doom I'll have to stick to console gaming, so CoD4 sounds pretty kewl.
buggerit, I was afraid of that, it is the SP demo.
