Most commercial games look better than those two examples these days, that is pure unadulterated fact. There is nothing 'pretty' about Dwarf Fortress, it's almost 100% functional visuals with very little element of style. Nevertheless it plays like awesome. Never played Spring but the mere fact you mentioned it in the same breath as Dwarf Fortress means it must be very, very good.

Just a note, the games 1213 and the "7 Days a Stranger" series are made by Ben Croshaw, who also does the hilarious <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation" target="_blank">Zero Punctuation</a> feature on the Escapist Magazine. Pretty funny stuff.
Quite a fun game which is slowly nearing completion. Still may have a few bugs here and there but apart from that there shouldn't be any hassle. You can even design your own ships that you can try out.
Cool, although they probably didn't have to rip off Warning Forever to make their game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Well, I would think that it's based on many things from Warning Forever - including the name obviously, but still - it's a great game in itself, and frankly this is how a game should evolve.
And afaik it's only one guy who's made this game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Right, it would still be the same game if he used a different art style and stuff. It's not like WF invented "blowing parts off of spaceships" and there's no need for him to rip it off in huge amounts. Still, the game seems very interesting and I'll be sure to watch it.

so it isn't you vs progressively larger ships, it is you controlling a number of ships that are similar to those you would fight in WF
It's sort of like someone taking Half-Life 2 and making an RTS game called "Full-Life" where you control either the Combine or the Rebels in an intense fight through the ruins of City 17. The gameplay's different but you're using the guns and characters of the other game, not to mention the name and setting, when you could have created your own universe and stuff and used all of that instead of stealing anything at all.
It uses different guns that have only passing similarities. I would've preferred it if they were the exact same, because then I could make a ship of DEATH with dozens of lasers.
