You're **obscenity** kidding me, right.... you can't even put DoD and Firearms in the same category, let alone Wasteland.
Have you even played Dod? It ain't number 2 (or 3.. since YOU CANNOT FORGET TFC) for no reason.

Number 1: CS (Counter-Strike). It'll stay number one, no matter what you do. It's a good "counter-terrorism" game. Although the terrorism theme is only a nice foreground for what really is a deathmatch with real, nowadays armament. This used to be the "be all end all" FPS. Still a very very good game (if you haven't played it yet) but with each passing version, they seem to add as much good and bad to the game. This damn game has more people playing it then Unreal Tournament, Quake 2, Quake 3 (all versions), Unreal Tournament 2003, Battlefied 1942, and any other game you can think of, PUT TOGETHER!

Number 2: Sometimes DoD (Day of Defeat, World War II mod) and sometimes TFC (Team Fortress Classic). Or maybe Dod has established itself number 2 for good? I don't remember, been a while since I played. Both Day of Defeat and Team Fortress Classic are highly addictive, and they both do a FANTASTIC job. Dod is a realism based WWII game, that'll get you hook, and TFC is an Action team based game. I played (and still play) DoD since their 2nd beta, and I've played TFC for a good 3 years. Both of wich you'll never get tired of.

Number 3: TFC or Dod. See number two.

Number 4: Must be Natural Selection, but I'm not sure. As for this little gem, we'll be playing it for years to come <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I can see it come number 2 or 3, but not higher. The CS fan-base is simply too large and too dedicated (the core fanbase that is). With each patch and new release the dev team gives us, their fanbase will grow <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> .<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Dude, I played DoD the first day it came out....and I played it for a month after that...after that it just never kept me coming back for more. I would definely put DoD with Wasteland, I'd much rather have a nice LAN of Wasteland than DoD anyday. I'd even consider playing the Wizards and Warriors mod before DoD...lol, well not really <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I understand what you're saying about TFC. But in organized TFC, sniper is useless and not even seen during the match (unless there's a strict offensive strat that calls for it). If you want me to show you an example, I'll get a link to a demo so you can see what actual organized top clan TFC play is like. Alright, I'll have to check out some of those demos. No sniper sounds like it would be pretty fun. I'd play it over CS anyday.

Stop trying to act like a grown-up and go play with your blocks. And nobody said you can't play CS AND NS, they're just saying that a lot of people who play CS play it for it's simplicity. I completely agree that many people simply aren't willing to take time away from CS to learn a new mod, especially one with such depth.

I think that we'll soon start to see jumps in NSs community. I read PCGamer a lot, and they constantly showcase mods in their magazine, and include the mod on their demo discs. I'll bet once they get a hold of it, there'll be a serious jump in players. Things like that happen a lot, so I think that over time we'll see the community rise.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Please pick out some more spelling mistakes, because that will help prove your point on an internet forum.

I took out the smart remark. You are right, uh-oh we should play nice.

BTW that in-mature was not a typo, I was trying to emphasis it.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Maybe I didn't express myself properly...

    GhostBomber got what I meant.

The Mainstream FPS Community dictates the type of games developed and released by game companies. So far FPS titles lack the intelligence, maturity (Depth), and patience (Gameplay) that NS has chosen to include.

By this alone I conclude that NS will not be popular (popular like Mainstream FPS Games) until people are into games with intelligence, maturity, and patience (Like NS). I don't mean to imply that the GAMERs are dumb, immature, and impatient, just that their tastes are geared toward much simplier games.

I respect CS as a highly popular FPS that makes up a large part of the Mainstream FPS Community. I see that as niether positive or negative, just the way things are.

Why should this mod become popular? I say quality of players over quantity of players. Tell me a good reason why Natural Selection should be at the top of that statistics list.

Really, aside from the fact that they're both Half-Life mods, comparing CS and NS for which should be '#1' is like apples and oranges. When I don't want to be playing long, or want some fast-paced slightly mindless fun, I go CS. When I've got some time to sit down, and feel like going into an epic sci-fi battleground using strategy and teamwork, I play NS. :-)

That said, CS will always be #1 in the charts, BECAUSE it's slightly mindless fun, and thus easier to get in to. But let us not forget, while there are the 12 year olds that will keep CS #1, the computer world was built by geeks. And geeks will keep NS #2, just waiting for the day that 12 year old ages a little and wants something more then a little mindless fun. ;-)

I'm not surprised that this thread degenerated into personal insults before it even got off the first page. You people talk about being intelligent and mature enough to play NS, then make fools of yourselves on these forums.

Uh.....here is one.....You have to use your brain. Granted you have to use your brain in all games like CS, but it goes about as far as listening to footsteps, and predicting where a person might go, but people who want a challenge will play a game with more challenge.
  • BrutusBrutus Join Date: 2002-10-20 Member: 1555Members
First, I see the same ration of people acting immature in NS as I do in CS. The same people are playing each game.

For me NS provides no more and at time less of a challenge then CS does. I guess it depends on who you are playing with.

As for 12 year olds keeping CS alive, I doubt 12 year olds are the one running the majority of servers.

NS is the best mod for Halflife, period. I've been playing TFC for years, and been in a clan for quite a while. TFC clan matches are great fun, and have a good element of strategy.
What I can't wait to see, though, is what happens in NS clan matches. I mean, *pub games* have strategy to them at this point, assuming decent players all around. In an organized match, where the commander is *always* the commander, and is always commanding the same groups of pre-organized troops... it's gonna get hectic when they go against a crack team of aliens, that's for sure.
But back on topic: Will NS be #1 in player quantity? Doubtful, as CS has too much of a foothold. But I don't want to see a huge influx of players (huge meaning thousands) into NS. It would mean more idiots around to mess up a game (as ONE idiot in a server can mess up EVERYBODY'S game), and a quicker proliferation of cheats.
I hope NS gets to the scale of TFC or DoD, though. That would be very nice. Lots of good servers to choose from <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I have mixed feelings about having a very large amount of players....On one hand, lots of players does mean idiots and cheaters, but on another hand, it means more more support, more intelligent people that can contribute with bots,maps,anti-cheat,websites, downloads, ect.....So its important to find the right balance.

I think NS will stay in the lower half of the top 5. The reason: NS will attract players who like to seriously play both FPSs and RTSs. I belive that those types of people are fairly rare. What I mean is, most people who play CS aren't also playing tons of Warcraft and Heroes of Might and Magic (for example), just like players of WC and HOMM are not usually playing tons of CS. There are plenty of people who do enjoy both; as is evident from the popularity of this mod already. However, I don't believe that this type of game will ever attract the types of numbers that a pure FPS or RTS game does. That's just not usually how hybrids work. It is a wonderful game, the only one I'm currently playing, and fills a niche that has been sorely needed. I just don't think that there's enough players who love FPSs and who also love RTSs to allow this mod to have the numbers that CS/DoD/TFC have.

Now I play NS, and from the first day I started playing I believed this mod was going to be #1 very soon. Its #3 or #2 now, im not sure, but it has a big leap to take over CS. Here is some info for each mod in my opinion.

CS: Its the #1 right now and I think its that way is because there was nothing else to play at the time. I played CS for years and years and its not very hard to play. I got to the point where killing the whole enemy team was just a repetive thing. Many of my friends and lots of other people can do this easily as well. So after years of this, CS gets so boring......so then after playing Action HL for a while before this, I went back to good ol' Action.

Action HL: Ok, I personally think this is the best FPS mod. Its a lot more interesting with stunts, ect .....and there are gibs.....oh how I love the gibs. It takes some real skill to be able to use the guns in that game and its to bad there are only a handful of servers, but oh well. I was playing that up until I found out about NS.

Firearms, DoD, Wasteland : These are some others I've played on LAN, some online, but they are just the same old FPS, just different models pretty much. They are the very low end of whats semi-good.

    Now I come to NS......
NS: I started this after Action HL, and I was immediately impressed. It wasnt to hard to learn, I started playing as alien so it was a bit tougher, but I got it pretty good after a few maps. I was amazed at how much it really is a team game. All the other team games, CS, Action, ect......did not really need teamwork. Like I said before, one person can take out a whole team. Also, from playing games like Starcraft I was at home with the strategic elements you must think about in game and you cant win without both teamwork and strategy. Which is a very good challenge. I see lots of people from CS coming in being a "NSPLAYER" being a noob all over again, but they all love it still. Whatever reason they needed to leave CS, whether it be boredom, it being to easy, to repetitive, or just wanted to play something new......they found it in NS and im glad.

i think that NS gets the job done as-is. i see the NS community becoming very similar to the TFC community. just as TFC has its home in The Catacombs, i see NS being very similar. yet, i can see the NS players becoming very tightly knit, more so than TFC.

i used to play CS as a diversion. its fun. but, im just too terrible at it. lol.

now, i see it this way: we cant judge NS until its biggest guns have been released on the HL world. yes, im talking about NS clanning. correct me if im wrong, but wasnt NS intended to be the ultimate team play experience? i just hope that the NS clanning stays intense but small.

see, i play TFC and am always hearing complaints about top clanning. it stops being about the game. its all about winning(and sometimes cheating), its all about being better than everyone else.

i propose that the NS communit makes something of a vow to always hold the game dear. i mean, i know TFC "players" who havent played a map in a year. i dont wanna see that. i wanna see NS be about the game, the war, Fronteersmen against the Kharaa, Clan Vs. Clan, friendly competition where you go into that server and get your job done against the hated enemy and still come out friends. put away the hostility. i havent seen it in NS, and i never wanna. i love this community.

does NS have what it takes to be #1? who cares <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> this isnt a competition between mods. as long as you play, it will live. isnt that really all that matters? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

play, for the love of the game

DOD has 1200 servers,TFC has 876 servers, NS has 250. Long way to go, folks.

Player count, however, has DOD at 4200, TFC at 3200, and NS at 2200 as of Sunday 5pm..

Use All-Seeing Eye browser program, it's at least twice as good as everything else out there. Gamespy Arcade is just a joke.

I'm amazed at how few of you have come from DOD. Most exciting game on the earth. :-P NS is usually funner tho

What other types of stats does the All Seeing eye give?

Concerning NS' playerbase being limited because of the hybrid aspect, I disagree. Only one player in the game really has to play the RTS aspect, and that's the commander. If you don't like RTS gameplay, don't be the Marine Commander and don't play a Gorge. Besides that, it's basically just a team-based FPS(besides building structures as a marine), and I don't think the RTS element will scare that many people off.

Give NS some time, it'll get bigger and bigger, I almost guarantee that. I told like 1 person at my school about NS, and then he got like 5 of his friends to DL it and play it now. So stuff spreads quick. As for best mod, I have to agree that it doesn't matter much about what the best mod is, play what's fun.

Having never played CS I can't really say which is better. Personally I prefer the uniqueness of NS, and it's player base doesn't consist of the l337ists that CS does. I hope that never changes, and I highly doubt it will, after all there is no, and there never will be a sniper rifle for them to camp and use. And personally I think they don't understand the whole concept of teamwork yet. CS isn't really a team game, it's who can kill the other team fastest. NS has strategy behind winning, something the aliens were forced to grasp early on in the games life. I say give NS some time and see what it'll do. It's not even a month old yet, and look at it's player base already.

Most mod communities have gone to hell. DoD and CS as examples, but NS, well, the community isnt filled with **obscenity** and idiots, so they win there <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The cool thing about NS as well is, there are people from other mod communities making sub communities to play NS. So it's like everyone else is coming together from other mods. I play TFC mainly, along with HLDM from time to time, and I like NS, and think I'll stick with it.

Deathmatches i have never liked in a game... To me Cs was the first mod that ever took the focus slightly off from the DM feel.. bomb and hostage maps... But killing is a must and 9/10th's of the time it is a DM game anyways....

Ns has taken away the DM feel and I'm living it up... i think this is one of the best mods i have ever played. With that being said...

THere is too many people who prefer DM games that will live on cs... NS is to team and rts for this game to thrive in the DM world.

Natural Selection is unique -- I can see it drawing people who were never interested in CS, DOD, or other mods. The more the merrier!

Hopefully development will continue so that NS doesn't get stale, and that NS will inspire future mods of greatness! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
